Pugh & Scarpa Architects
2009-04-12 12:01:00 "Orange Grove is a five-unit for sale market rate loft project, featuring ceiling heights up to 30 feet. The building is sensitively designed and compatible with the neighborhood, but differs in material palette and scale from its neighbors. Referencing architectural conventions of modernism rather than the pitched roof forms of traditional domesticity, the project presents a characteristic that is consistent with the eclectic and often unconventional demographic of West Hollywood. Distinct from neighboring structures, the building creates a strong relationship to the street by virtue of its large amount of highly usable balcony area in the front façade. While there are dramatic and larger scale elements that define the building, it is also broken down into comprehensible human scale parts, and is itself broken down into two different buildings. Orange Grove displays a similar kind of iconoclasm as the Schindler House, an icon of California modernism, located a short distance away. L...

Flashback: Autos by Architects
2009-02-16 16:15:00 However many architects actually did cross disciplinary lines to draft up automobiles, John Pashdag focuses on four of the better-known architects who did - Buckminster Fuller, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius and Frank Lloyd Wright - for his article in SIA #39, March-April 1977. And never let it

Architects Say the Hotel is the Pitts
2009-01-08 20:04:00 We really didn't need architects to tell anyone that the proposed Wingate hotel on the Waterfront is shitty. They argue that the addition of a suburban-style hotel on that parcel would "mar the shoreline", which indeed it would. (Did we really need architects to tell us that?) As with ...

The S.I.M.P.L.E. System by Garrison Architects
2008-10-01 15:00:00 "Garrison Architects is committed to the creation of provocative, humane, carefully crafted architecture. James Garrison established the firm in 1991 after a long and fruitful partnership with Polshek and Partners. He established an office where architecture is produced within a dynamic and highly collaborative studio atmosphere. Garrison Architects maintains that the best architecture is the product of a constant and dynamic exchange among committed designers, engineers, and craftsmen, guided by the needs of the client and the particularities of the site, and focused on the relationship between man and nature. In this manner architecture can be made which stirs the imagination and the soul. The firm considers the myriad implications of building, from the cultural and environmental perspectives down to the smallest details." to find out more... Sustainable design overview from Gerard Lee Architects
2008-09-06 08:00:00 "So how does sustainable or "green" design apply to your home? What is "green" design? Just doing a simple search on the internet will result in hundreds of thousands of references. All similar to a certain extent and yet different. Reading through some of them will make you realise that when it comes to "green" design, many experts and or architects who specialize in sustainable design differ in what they call "green" design. For some, it means using natural materials, or waste products, utilizing the natural resources for fuel, lighting, recycling water and avoiding certain materials like steel studs that use high embodied energy through it's production. For others, it means that metal studs are good because they are an easily recycled material. Some designers follow the path of LEED as a guideline for the "greening" of buildings. Others say it's skewed to accomodate certain building product manufacturers and loosely terms many materials as "green". Still others say any type of p...

Museum Liaunig By Austrian Architects Querkraft.
2008-09-03 17:40:00 Museum Liaunig By Austrian Architects Querkraft. Museum Liaunig a project of industrialist and art collector Herbert W. Liaunig near Neuhaus in Carinthia, Austria was open last week. The Austrian architects Querkraft designed this new museum which houses the contemporary art and gold objects collected by Herbert W. Liaunig. The museum Liaunig projects out on two sides over steep-sided ground. The new museum looks more like a work of land art. But only a small part of the museum building is visible.Other Posts:Vehicles Made Of Wood.Creativity With Recycled Tires.Gardens With Distinctive Looks.Who Says Staircases Can't Be Creative.Spaghetti Cabling & Need For Cable Management.

Yokohama Housing By Torafu Architects.
2008-09-02 17:51:00 Yokohama Housing By Torafu Architects. Here we have an interesting architecture by Torafu Architects: Yokohama housing (tentative). Though no information is available about its design and architectural aspect or the source of its inspiration, but it does look interesting. And the design has given this building a unique and a different look that makes it stand out from the rest. Though the looks may not be appreciated by many, but interiors with the neat ends look quite interesting. And on the whole it looks like more of a combination with cubes & triangles. Call for papers: Victorian provincial architects
2008-05-06 13:33:00 A one-day colloquium to be held at the University of Liverpool, 28th November 2008. Famous names, many of them London-based, tend to dominate the history of nineteenth-century British architecture. Lesser-known figures in the regions, however, were largely responsible for building Victorian Britain. In Liverpool, the local architects William Culshaw (1806/7-1874) and Henry Sumners (1825/6-1895) were prolific designers ...
49. Young Architects Now Means "Young"
2008-05-01 19:59:00 This was just too good to pass up. We have been talking about this stuff all along and then came this. We have said don't wait. The age of "The Lone Genius" architect is gone we are now in the era of the united team , go out and work for a famous architect and most importantly Rem Koolhaas has wings. Well this just confirms it. If you can't take if from us take it from Icon:Is it just us or is the young architect a very different beast these days? For the first time, "young" actually means young, but "architect" may no longer mean architect. This is our list of the most significant rising practices. Like all list stories, you'll disagree with some of it, but that's half the fun. The first thing to mention is that the "young architect" is definitely younger than he or she used to be. We borrowed the convention of using 40 as our cut-off point, but at least half of the people on this list are 35 or under - and one of them is a 33-year-old overseeing a practice with 75 staff. ...
