Saga Persistence and Event-Driven Architectures
2009-04-20 13:50:00 When working with clients, I run into more than a couple of people that have difficulty with event-driven architecture (EDA). Even more people have difficulty understanding what sagas really are, let alone why they need to use them. I’d go so far to say that many people don’t realize the importance of how sagas are ...

Top 10: Natural Architectures
2007-12-10 08:48:00 The natural environment still manages to fill us with a sense of awe and amazement. despite the amount of scientific knowledge mankind has gathered, nature still holds great mysteries that we may never be able to unravel. this complexity has continually daunted man. in frustration, we try to control nature by enforcing order. as a result, we have distanced ourselves from the earth, even though our survival is completely dependent on it. we are now trying to regain our close connection to nature. There is an emerging art movement that is exploring mankind’s desire to reconnect to the earth, through the built environment. referred to as ‘natural architecture’, it aims to create a new, more harmonious, relationship between man and nature by exploring what it means to design with nature in mind. ‘la tonnelle’ by gilles bruni and marc babarit, 1996 ‘ash dome’ by david nash, 1977 ‘organic highway’ by mikael hansen 1995 ‘bridge in moas...

VW to launch four new architectures to boost expansion
2007-11-27 00:56:00 VW to launch four new architectures to boost expansion Volkswagen has announced that it will roll out four new architectures for use in all VW brands. The move is intended to cut costs — by as much as 40% — and double VW's global sales, helping the German automaker reach its goal of catching Toyota. The new architectures could also reduce development times by a year, helping VW to get new models to market faster. The largest volume architecture will be VW's transverse-engine architecture — dubbed MQB — and will be used for small-, lower-medium and upper-medium models. According to Automotive News, the MQB could underpin as many as 6 million vehicles, making it the industry's biggest platform. ?MQB is planned for a broad application, from small cars up to and including upper-medium,? Ulrich Hackenberg, VW brand board member for development, told Automotive News Europe. ?The first model to emerge can be expected in 2010.? Hackenberg faile...

2007-11-08 09:31:00 In the previous posts of this serie we’ve addressed the availability and scalability aspects of high availability systems. In this (rather lengthy) one we’ll focus on the performance side of things. Again, performance is something to be contextually defined quite early in the project. For instance a requirement such as ?3s response time? is not precise ...
