Crying Lightning... de Arctic Monkeys
2009-09-21 18:58:00
Vuelta a al curso, y espero que vuelta otra vez a escribir en el blog con regularidad. Aunque no sé cuanto tiempo libre me dejaran mis otras ocupaciones. En fin, aunque lleve tiempo escuchandola, hoy no me puedo quitar esta canción de la cabeza. Tanto que me he decidido a buscar la letra, traducirla y compartirla. Parece que va sobre el estereotipo de la ex-novia manipuladora, una Blair Waldorf en potencia ;).Enlace a este video en YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/-watch?v=J_G9RRY7SS0Outside the cafe by the cracker factory (Fuera del café al lado de la fábrica de crakers)You were practicing a magic trick (estabas practicando un truco de magia)And my thoughts got rude, as you talked and chewed (y mis pensamientos se volvieron sucios, mientras hablabas y masticabas)On the last of your pick and mix (en la ultima parte de tu extraña mezcla)Said your mistaken if your thinking that I haven't been caught cold before (dije que errabas si pensabas que nunca había sido pillado desprevenid...

First Look: THE BIG BANG THEORY Returns From the Arctic
2009-08-27 04:31:00
One doesn’t need to have a Sheldon-sized intellect to piece together that the gang’s three month arctic expedition didn’t exactly go as planned over the summer. How else to explain some of these seriously spoileriffic photos from THE BIG BANG THEORY season premiere titled “The Electric Can Opener Fluctuation” that has one member of our fearsome foursome really happy to be home, and another fleeing to Mommy (Also known as special guest star Laurie Metcalf!) in disgrace? But hey, don’t take our word for it, judge for yourself by checking out the photos after the jump.
New albums to buy: Arctic Monkeys, Fun.
2009-08-26 00:39:00
Two really good new albums out today: Arctic Monkeys' "Humbug" and "Aim and Ignite," the debut for Fun., comprising members of The Format, Anathallo and Steel Train. The latter is awfully easy to like. It's a playful pop carnival with as much spunk, if not more, as singer Nate Ruess brought to the Format. Sometimes he overwrites, and the album is bursting with a few too many musical flourishes, but few records are as guaranteed to make you skip, smile or both. Some are complaining that Arctic Monkeys' third disc disappoints simply because it changes up their fast-moving guitar attack for something more pensive and strange. I say these British lads have done what is so difficult to do: Followed up a...

Lolla '09 review: Arctic Monkeys
2009-08-09 01:24:00
4:30 p.m. Budweiser stageI've always found Arctic Monkeys' spry, cheeky and oh-so-Brit act insufferable. Which is why they were a revelation Saturday. First off, they're best experienced live. They were loud, tight and relentless. Maybe more important, their new CD, "Humbug," out at the end of the month in the U.S., sounds promising -- dark, muscular and brooding, like four guys who want to pummel you with rock and roll. The sweaty, shirtless and tatooed masses, body-to-body well past the sound tent, went their fist-pumping craziest for old frenetic standbys like "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor," but that song was outshined by "Crying Lightning," a burner from the new CD built around a deep bass groove. Putin Pushes For Arctic Oil
2008-08-18 20:27:00
The New York Times reported yesterday that Vlad Putin, the guy into whose soul (assuming either has one) Dubya said he famously looked some time ago (or "got a sense of"; whatever), is in hot pursuit of crude likely to be found in the frozen north?A growing array of military leaders, Arctic experts and lawmakers say the United States is losing its ability to patrol and safeguard Arctic waters even as climate change and high energy prices have triggered a burst of shipping and oil and gas exploration in the thawing region. The National Academy of Sciences, the Coast Guard and others have warned over the past several years that the United States? two 30-year-old heavy icebreakers, the Polar Sea and Polar Star, and one smaller ice-breaking ship devoted mainly to science, the Healy, are grossly inadequate. Also, the Polar Star is out of service. And this spring, the leaders of the Pentagon?s Pacific Command, Northern Command and Transportation Command strongly recommended in a letter that...
Arctic ice refuses to melt as ordered
2008-08-15 18:29:00
Once again NASA satellite data tells us something different. The adjacent photos tell a different story, and that is the ice pack grew to identical to 2002, 2005 and 2006 levels. As I have discussed before Arctic Ocean ice levels are controlled in part to ocean currents. Over and over again the estimations of arctic melting is over exaggerated.

Phoenix to make perilous landing on Martian arctic
2008-05-26 05:28:00
The historically less-than-50 per cent odds of success loomed heavily as NASA scientists readied for today’s landing of the 420-million-dollar Phoenix spacecraft near Mars’s frigid north pole. “I’m a little nervous on the inside. This is not an easy thing to do,” Phoenix scientist Peter Smith said. “There’s a lot of uncertainties left. Mars is always there ...

Arctic Ice Shelf is cracking up...
2008-05-26 00:00:00
It's happening faster than anyone has expected: Dramatic evidence of the break-up of the Arctic ice-cap has emerged from research during an expedition by the Canadian military. Scientists travelling with the troops found major new fractures during an assessment of the state of giant ice shelves in Canada's far north. According to another scientist on the expedition, Dr Luke Copland of the University of Ottawa, "We're seeing very dramatic changes; from the retreat of the glaciers, to the melting of the sea ice. "We had 23% less (sea ice) last year than we've ever had, and what's happening to the ice shelves is part of that picture." And yet another researcher, Derek Mueller of Trent University, Ontario, remarked: "I was astonished to see these new cracks. It means the ice shelf is disintegrating, the pieces are pinned together like a jigsaw but could float away." It seems like every new discovery up there just reinforces the idea that the Arctic is just melting away...

The Weekly Carboholic: boreal forest moves north, reducing Arctic albedo
2008-05-21 16:51:00
When we think about forests and global heating, we generally think about how forests sequester carbon via respiration and storage in their trunks and leaves. For that reason, we’re often told that we should support reforestation efforts, support efforts that reduce deforestation, and even plant trees ourselves. And all of those things will help. But in some cases, forests can also behave as a net carbon source instead of a carbon sink. The Carboholic reported on one such possible instance back on January 9. Last week, ScienceNews reported on the release of a study that shows that expanding forests taking over tundra could also further exacerbate global heating. The problem is this: as the boreal forest that blankets North America, Europe, and Asia up to the Arctic Circle spread further north into former tundra, the albedo (the amount of light reflected off the ground back into space) of the land goes down, effectively creating yet more Arctic heating in a positive feedbac...
