Coming Out to Arlen Specter -- An oldie but a goody
2010-10-11 22:23:00
Obviously, I got no reply to this.  I thought today was a good day to share this oldie but a goody.  Growing up gay in the 80's was no picnic.  My message today:  Life does get better! Dear Senator Specter: I am writing to you because I have had about enough of people making statements that either directly, or indirectly imply that being gay is a choice. Unfortunately, this position seems to be very popular, and espoused by some uninformed -- straight people. First question I always have is, how would you know that...You're straight! As politicians seem to love a good warm fuzzy, real American story to support all the good they have done, I thought I would share with you my experience as a gay man. This way, when you do the right thing, and stand up against the proposed Amendment to the Constitution, barring gay marriage, you will have a good human interest photo-op all ready to go. So, lets look back, shall we? I have always had a romantic interest ...

Arlen Specter... Buh Bye!
2010-05-19 18:02:00
See ya later Arlen. Your big party flip-flop wasn't enough to fool the voters of Pennsylvania.  Those antics might work for Connecticut, but we don't want another Joe Lieberman embarrassing the voters of this state! Sure, your reelection was important to PA just because of your seniority within the Senate, but it was also that seniority which was important for PA to shed. Time for new blood to represent us in the Keystone State.   I voted for Mr Sestak. I voted for Onorato.  I voted for Scott Conklin. I only wish I could have voted for Critz! Now it's time to get serious in PA!  Mr. Onorato has a big competitor in Tom Corbett.  He has branding & message experience behind him.  Onorato has his work cut out for him on this one.  What will be particularly interesting is the race is between two candidates from Allegheny County... aka... Pittsburgh.  This will make Philly important for completely different reasons than usual, and I...

Lawmakers face angry crowds on health care
2009-08-12 03:17:00
Lawmakers face angry crowds on health care LEBANON, Pa. (AP) – Jeers and taunts drowned out Democrats calling for a health care overhaul at town halls Tuesday, and one lawmaker said a swastika was spray-painted at his office as debate turned to noisy confrontation over President Barack Obama’s plan. The president himself was treated more ...

Did Sotomayor Lie to Senators? Did Judge Sonia Sotomayor twist the truth when she met with Senators before her confirmation hearings began? .  . . . he wouldn’t be facing headlines like this one in the Christian Science Monitor:  Are Specter?s Senate days numbered? With his polls slipping and Congressman Joe Sestak having all but announced a bid to challenge the Senator in Pennsylvania’s Democratic primary, the odds against the Republican-turned-Democrat returning to the 112th Congress are increasing ...
Arlen Specter given Chairmanship of Sub-Committee
2009-05-07 20:14:00
Newly minted, and already confused, Democratic Senator Arlen Specter has been given a Chairmanship of a Sub-Committee by the Democrats. Dick Durbin stepped down as the Chairman of the Crime & Drugs Subcommittee to pass the reigns to Arlen Specter (D-PA).This committee oversees about 60% of the justice department according to CNN. More importantly, this puts him dead in the center of the debate on the coming Supreme Court nominations of Barack Obama. This is a big deal!!! Especially interesting as so many of the objections to him are rooted in his cross-examination of Anita Hill during the Clarence "Coke Can" Thomas confirmation hearings. (Speaking of which...There is a movement underway on the blogs to recruit her for the opening on the SCOTUS!)Not too shabby for a man that was just two weeks ago in the minority party. Most spectacular of all is that this was taken from Dick Durbin (D-IL) who is the second most senior member of the party in the Senate. This speaks volumes...

The Departure of Arlen Specter& the Return to Unifying Republican Principle
2009-04-29 22:18:00
Commenting on social conservatives gloating over Arlen Specter’s decision to switch parties, moderate Republican blogger Dennis Sanders suggests that “they probably have resigned the GOP to a rump status,” warning “you can be an ideologically pure party or you can be a majority party, but you can’t be both.”  He’s onto something here. Yes, Republican needs ...
Arlen Specter?s Opportunistic Switch

As I spent the better part of Tuesday away from the web and from any source of news, I did not read or hear what others have been saying about Arlen Specter’s sudden decision to switch parties. My sense is that anything I might have to say has already been said.  I’ve only read one post ...
Statement Arlen Specter Party Switch VIDEO TEXT
2009-04-29 02:48:00
I have been a Republican since 1966. I have been working extremely hard for the Party, for its candidates and for the ideals of a Republican Party whose tent is big enough to welcome diverse points of view. While I have been comfortable being a Republican, my Party has not defined who I am. I have taken each issue one at a time and have exercised independent judgment to do what I thought was best for Pennsylvania and the nation.Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans. When I supported the stimulus package, I knew that it would not be popular with the Republican Party. But, I saw the stimulus as necessary to lessen the risk of a far more serious recession than we are now experiencing.Since then, I have traveled the State, talked to Repu...
Arlen Specter Welcomed Into Democratic Party
2009-04-28 23:42:00
Pennsylvanian Republican Senator Arlen Specter will run for reelection as a Democrat in 2010.  Specter's vote for the Obama stimulus package was the final straw to fiscal conservatives essential to winning the Republican primary in Pennsylvania.  Senator Specter received "bleak polling" numbers from advisers he said Tuesday.  Polls showed that he would likely loose a Republican primary to Pat Toomey.  Specter barely survived a primary fight in 2004 against Toomey.  A second run against Toomey in the primary would not be in Specter's best interests.Specter told the media that Pennsylvania Democratic Governor Ed Rendell promised Specter he would not need to raise money if he ran as a Democrat.  Democrats were silently ecstatic on Tuesday.  Jumping on the inside Democratic Leader Harry Reid said now was "not the time to gloat."RNC Leader Michael Steele of course called Specter's move one of personal career protection and not of personal beliefs.  Steele obviously trying to d...

Arlen Specter Bolts for the ‘rats
2009-04-28 19:03:00
Senator Arlen Specter, (U - Scotland) has made if official.  He will caucus with the Democrats and seek re-electiion as a Democrat. Chris Cillizza, Washington Post: Specter To Switch Parties Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will switch his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat and announced today that he will run in 2010 as a Democrat, according to a statement he released this morning. Specter’s decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next senator from Minnesota. (Former senator Norm Coleman is appealing Franken’s victory in the state Supreme Court.) For the record, we second Michelle: Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Now Senator Scottish Law is Dirty Harry Reid’s problem.    Good luck Harry. Update:(Eric) Well, look, he was never far off being a Democrat in any event, as has been widely observed.  In the end, this was the ultimate act of p...

Senate passes $838 billion stimulus
2009-02-10 20:10:00
Democratic leaders vow to deliver legislation to president within days President Barack Obama’s economic recovery plan has passed the Senate and is on its way to difficult House-Senate negotiations. Arlen Specter: Conservative?
2008-04-09 01:48:00
Did I write that correctly? Did you read it correctly? Yes on both counts. Arlen Specter -- Lost Sight Of The Real Ball
2008-02-01 19:44:00
Arlen Specter has decided that this is his national priority."I am very concerned about the underlying facts on the taping, the reasons for the judgment on the limited penalties and, most of all, on the inexplicable destruction of the tapes," said Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., in a Thursday letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.I want to know why they squawk box that is my state Senator isn't as "concerned" about the destroyed emails of the White House? Why isn't he as "concerned" by the illegal spying of the government on US citizens? Why isn't he "very concerned" about a President that repeatedly breaks the law? Why isn't he "very concerned" about the business of this nation, especially as it relates to his prominent position on the Senate Judiciary Committee?Specter goes on to give lip service to these other matters, implying he is "concerned" about them too. The reality is that he is yet another rubber-stamp for the Bush Administration. He makes the waves of objection, ...
Arlen Specter Is For Corporation Immunity
2007-11-16 22:35:00
The most fascinating thing about hearings like the one about FISA yesterday in the Senate Judiciary Committee is watching Senators discuss issues amongst themselves. The reality these people live in is so different from ours. Sometimes it’s the arguments they use to comfort each other that freak me out the most. Here’s Arlen Specter arguing that giving retro-active immunity to corporations, like AT&T and Verizon who were the ones who physically tapped our phones and data-mined our calls and emails without warrants, isn’t a bad thing because, I don’t see, as I sit here, how anyone can prove their privacy was invaded. That they know what was done here. There’s one case under the Terrorist Surveillance Act where there was an inadvertent disclosure by the Federal government and somebody was able to show that they were subject to the program. But unless there would be something like that, I don’t see who’s going to be able to prove anything whether it’s against...

2007-09-03 07:02:00
Ole’ Arlen’s found himself a “loophole” again: he claims the “Public Footsie Champ of The U.S. Senate“, Larry Craig (R-ID) didn’t REALLY, OFFICIALLY, resign since he stated his intent to resign at a later date (30 September). Senator Specter says this opens up a technicality; the fact that “Mr. Footsie” didn’t actually RESIGN resign; ...
A Call To Duty; To Country -- A Letter to Arlen Specter
2007-07-18 21:13:00
I know I have been deathly quite lately, but the silence is now broken!I can no longer stomach the partisan ploys and rhetorical dances of the GOP!This is especially true when I consider that my own Senator -- Arlen Specter -- Stood up and was counted among those that wish to filibuster future and further debate, votes, and mentions of Iraq and the withdrawal of our troops. This nation is so disconnected from this war! Those are our kids dying on those dunes in Iraq! A generation is being destroyed and maimed for a failed policy built on lies, and consecrated with the blood of our fighting men & women. This is the saddest moment for me in this long struggle with a corrupt and power swollen Executive Branch. What must President Bush do to be challenged by his own party, and those of the Congress at large? Does no one see the future where the precedences he has set will only lead to greater corruptions of our democracy and the descent of this nation into a Dictatorship? Does no one ...
Gonzales No Confidence Vote Unsuccessful
2007-06-12 09:32:00
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales leaving after a speech in Miami, Florida on June 11, 2007 at the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism conference. REUTERS/Carlos Barria Democrats in the Senate tried unsuccessfully on Monday June 11, 2007, to end debate on a resolution showing no confidence in Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and they were not able to vote on the resolution. The resolution was one line saying "that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales no longer holds the confidence of the Senate and of the American people." Democrats needed 60 votes to invoke cloture on the resolution so that they could end the Republican filibuster and bring it up for a vote on the floor but it fell 7 votes shy of the 60 they needed. A roll call vote netted 53 in favor of invoking cloture and 38 not in favor of cloture. There were 7 Republicans who broke with the administration and refused to support the attorney general who has been intensely criticized for his de...
Sen. Arlen Specter: ?One day there will be a new attorney general, maybe so
2007-03-10 15:19:01
from the Washington Post by Paul Kane and Dan Eggen Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales agreed yesterday to change the way U.S. attorneys can be replaced, a reversal in administration policy that came after he was browbeaten by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee still angry over the controversial firings of eight federal prosecutors…. ….the administration has been battered by mounting allegations that several of the fired prosecutors — six of whom testified before Congress on Tuesday — had been the subject of intimidation, including improper telephone calls from GOP lawmakers or their aides, and alleged threats of retaliation by Justice Department officials. One prosecutor told lawmakers this week that he felt “leaned on” by a senior Republican senator, and Senate Democrats have readied subpoenas for five key members of Gonzales’ inner circle of advisers….
