Arlen Specter: Conservative?
2008-04-09 01:48:00
Did I write that correctly? Did you read it correctly? Yes on both counts. Arlen Specter, who has incurred the wrath of Conservatives almost as much as, it not more than, John McCain, has taken up the fight FOR Conservatives, instead of against them, in the battle to stop Democrats from halting the appointment of ...
Phils Get Hosed by Baseball Prospectus, Arlen Specter Fights Back

I broke my coffee mug this morning. Not just any mug, but my favorite. The handle had a significant chip in it and was clearly ready to fall, but I didn?t look at the signs. All of it was in front of my eyes and I just ignored it. And then it broke. Of course, I?m lying to you, I actually
Arlen Specter -- Lost Sight Of The Real Ball
2008-02-01 19:44:00
Arlen Specter has decided that this is his national priority."I am very concerned about the underlying facts on the taping, the reasons for the judgment on the limited penalties and, most of all, on the inexplicable destruction of the tapes," said Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., in a Thursday letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.I want to know why they squawk box that is my state Senator isn't as "concerned" about the destroyed emails of the White House? Why isn't he as "concerned" by the illegal spying of the government on US citizens? Why isn't he "very concerned" about a President that repeatedly breaks the law? Why isn't he "very concerned" about the business of this nation, especially as it relates to his prominent position on the Senate Judiciary Committee?Specter goes on to give lip service to these other matters, implying he is "concerned" about them too. The reality is that he is yet another rubber-stamp for the Bush Administration. He makes the waves of objection, ...
Arlen Specter Is For Corporation Immunity
2007-11-16 22:35:00
The most fascinating thing about hearings like the one about FISA yesterday in the Senate Judiciary Committee is watching Senators discuss issues amongst themselves. The reality these people live in is so different from ours. Sometimes it’s the arguments they use to comfort each other that freak me out the most. Here’s Arlen Specter arguing that giving retro-active immunity to corporations, like AT&T and Verizon who were the ones who physically tapped our phones and data-mined our calls and emails without warrants, isn’t a bad thing because, I don’t see, as I sit here, how anyone can prove their privacy was invaded. That they know what was done here. There’s one case under the Terrorist Surveillance Act where there was an inadvertent disclosure by the Federal government and somebody was able to show that they were subject to the program. But unless there would be something like that, I don’t see who’s going to be able to prove anything whether it’s against...

(H/T to Fark Politics) He’s shifty, he’s underhanded, he’s a flip-flopper, he’s about as trustworthy as a rattlesnake, but something most of us didn’t know up until now; he’s also pretty FUNNY… From PennLive.Com’s Pennsyltucky Politics Blog: DC’s funniest — Arlen Specter? U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) Says “Public Footsie Champ Of The U
2007-09-03 07:02:00
Ole’ Arlen’s found himself a “loophole” again: he claims the “Public Footsie Champ of The U.S. Senate“, Larry Craig (R-ID) didn’t REALLY, OFFICIALLY, resign since he stated his intent to resign at a later date (30 September). Senator Specter says this opens up a technicality; the fact that “Mr. Footsie” didn’t actually RESIGN resign; ...
A Call To Duty; To Country -- A Letter to Arlen Specter
2007-07-18 21:13:00
I know I have been deathly quite lately, but the silence is now broken!I can no longer stomach the partisan ploys and rhetorical dances of the GOP!This is especially true when I consider that my own Senator -- Arlen Specter -- Stood up and was counted among those that wish to filibuster future and further debate, votes, and mentions of Iraq and the withdrawal of our troops. This nation is so disconnected from this war! Those are our kids dying on those dunes in Iraq! A generation is being destroyed and maimed for a failed policy built on lies, and consecrated with the blood of our fighting men & women. This is the saddest moment for me in this long struggle with a corrupt and power swollen Executive Branch. What must President Bush do to be challenged by his own party, and those of the Congress at large? Does no one see the future where the precedences he has set will only lead to greater corruptions of our democracy and the descent of this nation into a Dictatorship? Does no one ...
Gonzales No Confidence Vote Unsuccessful
2007-06-12 09:32:00
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales leaving after a speech in Miami, Florida on June 11, 2007 at the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism conference. REUTERS/Carlos Barria Democrats in the Senate tried unsuccessfully on Monday June 11, 2007, to end debate on a resolution showing no confidence in Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and they were not able to vote on the resolution. The resolution was one line saying "that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales no longer holds the confidence of the Senate and of the American people." Democrats needed 60 votes to invoke cloture on the resolution so that they could end the Republican filibuster and bring it up for a vote on the floor but it fell 7 votes shy of the 60 they needed. A roll call vote netted 53 in favor of invoking cloture and 38 not in favor of cloture. There were 7 Republicans who broke with the administration and refused to support the attorney general who has been intensely criticized for his de...
Sen. Arlen Specter: ?One day there will be a new attorney general, maybe so
2007-03-10 15:19:01
from the Washington Post by Paul Kane and Dan Eggen Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales agreed yesterday to change the way U.S. attorneys can be replaced, a reversal in administration policy that came after he was browbeaten by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee still angry over the controversial firings of eight federal prosecutors…. ….the administration has been battered by mounting allegations that several of the fired prosecutors — six of whom testified before Congress on Tuesday — had been the subject of intimidation, including improper telephone calls from GOP lawmakers or their aides, and alleged threats of retaliation by Justice Department officials. One prosecutor told lawmakers this week that he felt “leaned on” by a senior Republican senator, and Senate Democrats have readied subpoenas for five key members of Gonzales’ inner circle of advisers….
