Veteran reliever Armando Benitez happy to be in Blue Jays camp
2008-03-13 23:01:00 Armando Benitez is happy to be in camp with the Toronto Blue Jays. It doesn’t matter to the 35-year-old that he has a minor league contract that will pay him $700,000 if he makes the major league roster, and he’s not concerned that he only signed Tuesday. Benitez is fully focused on making the most of ...

Armando Benitez Signs with Toronto!
2008-03-11 18:23:00 I have no idea why either.Maybe due to Casey Janssen's shoulder trouble today? But probably not.More on this when I think of something worthwhile to say about the Jays giving a minor league deal to a shitty reliever (granted, one with some name recognition-- for being shitty).Perhaps Armando is the first domino in a grand strategy to shuffle bullpen surplus into some positional upgrades. Or maybe JP is merely acquiring as much depth as possible in order to diffuse the pissing and moaning about the injury excuse. Either way, I guess it's not a terrible plan-- unlike actually putting Benitez into a game situation with the slightest hint of meaning, which would be fucking nuts.

Armando Benitez agrees to minor league contract with Toronto Blue Jays
2008-03-11 17:42:00 Relief pitcher Armando Benitez agreed to Tuesday to a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. The 35-year-old right-hander went 2-8 with a 5.37 ERA and nine saves in 55 games with Florida and San Francisco last season. Benitez has 289 saves over a 14-year, including a career-high 47 with Florida in 2004. He has struggled ...

Blue Jays Sign Armando Benitez
2008-03-11 13:17:00 According to the Toronto Star, the Blue Jays have signed reliever Armando Benitez to a minor league deal. He's apparently not in the closer picture (which makes sense, with B.J. Ryan and Jeremy Accardo good to go). Benitez, 35, struck out 57 in 50.1 innings last year with the Giants and Marlins. The problem was too many hits, home runs, and walks. That resulted in an ERA of 5.36. Benitez's control has always been poor; he's succeeded by being tough to hit. The strong Toronto defense could help in that regard.

Armando Benitez to Face Mets Even More
2007-06-01 20:32:00 The SF Chronicle is reporting that Armando Benitez is going to be traded to the Florida Marlins. As a Mets fan, the prospect of more ninth inning chokefests against Blownitez makes me a happy person. No reports yet on how many balls will be in the sack that the San Francisco Giants will get in

Benitez is Gone
2007-06-01 05:10:00 Earlier today, I speculated that Armando Benitez could find a new home in no time. A couple of hours ago, I read that the Giants were going to change things up. It's already settled: Benitez was sent to Florida (along with some cash, presumably) for Randy Messenger. Benitez would appear to step right into the closer's role for Florida, while the Giants will now turn to Brad Hennessey. I can't wait until the Marlins take their next trip to Shea Stadium: I'll bet that's a trip Benitez would prefer to skip. By Jeff SackmannBrew Crew Ball

Armando Benitez Traded To Florida
2007-06-01 05:00:00 The San Francisco Giants just traded Armando Benitez to the Florida Marlins for Randy Messenger. This is a tricky trade to evaluate from a fantasy standpoint. What’s Benetiz going to do in Florida? Can you really place him ahead of Kevin Gregg into the closer spot? Can Benitez be placed in front of recently healed Henry Owens? Does that mean Benitez is pitching the 7th inning now? On the Giants side there are questions too. Does Brad Hennessey get the closers job or does he stay as the main set up guy and Randy Messenger slide right into the closers role? Until the dust settles, let’s not make any rash moves. However, if you have some dead weight you were thinking about cutting, Hennessey is my pick in San Francisco and Gregg is my pick in Florida. Armando Benitez
2007-06-01 04:48:00 No sooner do I mention that Benitez is as safe a closer as any then he is dealt to the Florida Marlins. The question is who closes in San Frnacisco and who closes in Florida. For the Giants, let me say that there is a mad rush to pick-up Brad Hennessey in Yahoo!, ESPN, CBSportsline, etc. Recall that Hennessey did have shoulder soreness a few weeks ago so looking at a 2nd choice is wise. That is not quite so easy. I'd offer-up AAA reliever Brian Wilson because he is the one GM Brian Sabean designated this past off-season, but Wilson hasn't pitched since the 20th. As for Florida, Kevin Gregg has been outstanding this season and doesn't deserve to be replaced by Armando Benitez. Maybe he won't. Fredi Gonzalez has been quite flaky when it comes to his 9th inning man so Benitez in middle relief is possible. And what about the recently-activated Henry Owens? He lost the closer's role due to injury and now he is going to be pushed where? The 7...

Breaking News: Marlins Acquire Armando Benitez
2007-06-01 04:29:00 Yep. You read that right. The Marlins swung a move to bring back Armando Benitez tonight sending Randy Messenger to the Giants. Before anyone complains this move actually benefits us. Despite having a horrific game against the Mets the other night Benitez has enjoyed his best season with the Florida Marlins ...

Jeff Passan's Most Overpaid Team
2007-05-31 21:57:00 Here's an interesting article from the Yahoo columnist that includes his selections for most overpaid players so far this year. Some of the blurbs are downright painful, like the reminder that Jason Kendall is earning more than $13M for this year's "production." I bring it up because overpaid players are so often a source of trade rumors on a thin market. After all, do you think it would take much to pry Kendall away from the A's? Shea Hillenbrand away from the Angels? It seems that clubs falling in the standings with money to burn (Yankees, anyone?) can always take on more salary, making deals like last year's Bobby Abreu acquisition, which cost little more than money. The All-Overpaid team doesn't have a lot of candidates for that sort of deal, because many of the players are already playing for one of the rich teams, or--in Kendall's case--aren't going to be coveted by anybody. But there are a few candidates. The most notable i...

Armando Benitez
2007-05-28 03:29:00 2007 Rookie-of-the-Year candidate Tim Lincecum has given his owners nothing but smiles. With a 3.08 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 25 ks in 26.1 innings, there is nothing to complain about. Even with a scheduled start against the Mets on Tuesday, he will remain a fantasy favorite. (His one bad start was against a good offensive club in the Phillies. His three gems were against the opposite types of offensive clubs - the Astros and Rockies.) More important to fantasy owners is the job security closer Armando Benitez has gained from Lincecum's success as a starting pitcher. Recall at the start of the season, Benitez was threatened by the possibility of Lincecum being a shutdown, fireballing closer. While Benitez is unchallenged by any reliever in the Giants' bullpen, is it time to revise the intentions of Giants GM Brian Sabean to have AAA reliever Brian Wilson close if Armando turns ineffective?

Armando Benitez Warns Trading Him a Mistake
2007-03-24 06:19:00 Nominal Giants closer Armando Benitez won't be surprised if he is traded, but warns that the team will regret it."I understand the situation. I (won't) be (ticked) off," Benitez said in remarks quoted by Medianews in Saturday's edition of the Times Standard in Eureka, Calif. "I've been in this business for 13 years. It wouldn't be the first time I've been traded. But it'd be a mistake."Though he has struggled over the past two seasons, at least partly due to injuries, Benitez said is healthy and predicted he will return to form this year. The Giants are considering moving reliever Brian Wilson to the closer's role if Benitez can be moved, though Wilson has had a poor spring, leaving the team with few other options.Still, Benitez remains on the block, as evidenced by scouts from the Marlins and Mariners closely monitoring his performances.

Latest On Armando Benitez
2007-03-20 18:35:00 Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News has a good article up discussing the Giants' quandary with reliever Armando Benitez. On one hand, Benitez's value may never be higher now that he's healthy and throwing well in spring. Giants fans dislike Benitez, and ownership will take a ton of flak if he blows several saves. On the other hand, his salary is not a big issue for the Giants, their bullpen is a huge question mark, he seems healthy, and Benitez has his teammates' respect in the clubhouse. The article mentions a story where Benitez took all the September call-ups out to lunch and bought them two suits apiece, spending maybe $20,000 on the rookies. I say the Giants should keep him. He's not a great closer, but this team can't spare relievers. Brian Wilson closing would be a mess and would anger the fans just as much as Benitez. Speaking of which, unless it's going to hurt attendance somehow, the fans really shouldn't be a factor in...

Armando Benitez
2007-03-12 20:54:00 Reports have Armando Benitez, the embattled San Francisco closer, pitching well and looking like the Giants closer to begin the season - assuming he is not dealt to a team that needs a closer. The Marlins are most frequently mentioned, but, within this morning's San Francisco Chronicle, a new team is mentioned - the Boston Red Sox!Most recently, the bullpen-depleted Red Sox were said to have inquired about Benitez, who regularly got booed by Giants fans... "Red Sox" and "regularly booed by fans" are two pieces of information that should cause the immediate cessation of any trade discussions by the Red Sox. If the Giants turned on him, what's he going to do in the comfy confines of Fenway Park? Think Jeff Nelson going into the stands from the rightfield bullpen. If Boston acquired AB, there will be considerable fantasy commentary on the deal. Let me say right now, the Red Sox will be trading yet again if they think Benitez will solve their closing problems. Red Sox Inquire On Armando Benitez
2007-03-12 15:08:00 One trade tidbit I missed, assuming it was printed elsewhere: the Red Sox recently inquired about the availability of Giants closer Armando Benitez. As you know, the Marlins were interested earlier this winter. According to John Shea, Benitez still needs a lot of work to improve his velocity and location (and his location was never that great). Not that Benitez is any great shakes, but I can't see how the Giants think they have a surplus of relievers. They really don't have anyone who can take care of the ninth inning; I wouldn't be surprised to see Tim Lincecum closing by June. As for the Red Sox, Benitez is the ninth sounds like a disaster in the making. Maybe no more so than Joel Pineiro, but I don't see the point. I suppose it'd be a reasonable gamble if Boston only needed to cover his salary.
