X-Guard Sweep to Armbar
2008-05-21 19:51:00
http://www.youtube.com/v/MBUl-S-nR1KoX-Guard is synonymous with one thing for many grapplers- Sweeps.Today, here is the go-to sweep for when your opponent tripods himself to prevent the usual spread and underhook sweep.Note- The Armbar in this video is more or less a secondary move- the point here is to achieve a side mount via X-Guard.In X-Guard, after you spread your opponent's legs to the point that he can't maintain base, he will often try to prevent the sweep by posting on his far arm.Pull his upper body towards you, an overhook on the far arm, and preferably an underhook on the closer side.Pull down on the upper body, then explosively push up and out with your legs to complete the sweep.Secure Side Mount, or go for the Armbar like the video shows.
The Bicep Cutter (Bicep Slicer) from Armbar
2008-05-10 20:39:00
This is one of those techniques I'd avoid unless you're up against one of those freaks of nature whose grip strength seems to be impervious to any kind of leverage you apply on his arms. Not only because it's usually unnecessary, but because it can do tons of damage to a person's bicep or elbow joint with this thing. But every once in a while, you're either going to be really tired or up against a genetic freak of nature, so this is useful to have in your repertoire of submissions.http://www.youtube.-com/v/AvZgi3ETdw0Here goes:You attempt the armbar from mount, and the guy defends with the vanilla response to it, by grabbing his hands together, palm to palm, and doesn't let go.Lets say that you're unfamiliar with the general ways to apply more leverage to the arm (grabbing higher up on the forearm, spreading your chest to apply more force than a normal grip can take). You take a forearm and slide it in between the opponent's forearm and bicep, make sure the forearm is vertical ...
Pat Miletich: Escaping the Armbar
2008-04-21 20:27:00
Well, I thought this was appropriate in light of the Franklin vs. Lutter fight, where Franklin exhibited one of the finest armbar escapes in MMA history. Fight here: http://punchkickchoke.blogspot.-com/2008/04/george-st-pierre-vs--matt-serra-rich.htmlHere is Pat Miletich demonstrating how to perform the full version of the armbar escape that Rich Franklin used to escape the also slick armbar attempt by Travis Lutter:http://www.youtube.com/v-/jCfj69DEEnI1) As the attacker goes for the armbar, make sure that your hands are locked together in a wrestler's grip (palms together)2) While in the tug-of-war with your opponent, as he pulls really hard, throw out your arm, pinky up, to the far side of your opponent while throwing your near leg away, spinning out of the armbar.3) Continue the movement by posting the arm that was being attacked, and passing his legs for side-mount.

The Flying Armbar, aka, the "please don't think that this is a high percent
2008-03-24 18:55:00
I'm a little short on time today, So I'm going to stick you guys with a little bit of flashiness. So, without further ado...THE FLYING ARMBAR from submissions101.http://www.youtu-be.com/v/76bEAM5MjrQThe biggest difference between BJJ and Judo guys with this move, as I see it, is that the Judo guy focuses heavily on making sure the opponent is flat on his back by the end of the technique, by throwing the leg over later, and using the inside leg with more force. Also, to finish, a flying submissions highlight...Enjoy!http://www.yo-utube.com/v/6WWgmHAvsrs
Dean Lister Shows How to Break an Armbar Stalemate by Cutting at the Forear
2008-02-13 20:25:00
A lot of weak novice grapplers I've seen have been caught in many an armbar stalemate while attempting it from the top, because the opponent is stronger with a powerful grip.Dean 'The Boogeyman' Lister shows how to break that without too much trouble:Tips from the video:Don't try to swing back to wedge your own arm as far into the elbow as possible- instead, figure four near the back of the forearm.Don't try to yank back or up. Rather, use your shoulders and abs to pull the elbow towards the chest. That pushes their forearm and bicep together with your own arm in between, which creates a significant amount of pressure on the forearm.-y

Arm-drag Takedown to Armbar.
2007-12-08 18:59:00
In this video, they demonstrate a fairly easy arm-drag to clinch to achilles sweep takedown, and follow it up with an armbar (last part).Great instructional, though I would replace the defensive grip breaking to clinch with the offensive equivalent- aka, grab him first. Why? Try taking the back of a guy as soon as you start to make a counter-attacking movement. Significantly harder than you taking the offensive. Regardless, it's a wonderfully easy transition, and just as easy to practice. So get off your asses.-y

New Credit Scoring Armbar
2007-12-03 16:24:00
Do you have an Adjustable Rate Mortgage (ARM)?  Prepare to be viewed differently by credit card companies, auto lenders, and banks.  There?s a new credit scoring system in town and it rates consumers based on the type of loan they have (i.e. fixed or adjustable).  It’s a credit score armbar. From Equifax.com, “Equifax Equips Financial Institutions with ...
Basic Armbar Escape - the Telephone (Submissions 101)
2007-12-02 19:55:00
I'm currently at the point in my ground game where I can get my submissions in, but I'm pretty awful at defending them. Here's the 'Telephone' escape from an attempted armbar in someone's guard. It raises a good point- don't post your hand on the ground when possible... that opens you up to a multitude of submissions possible from the guard like the guard, and most obviously, a Kimura.Anyway, watch the video and never* be caught in an armbar again.*('never' is probably a bad word. More like 'not that often.')

Flying Armbar !
2007-04-18 01:10:00
I joked about this in the comments section of the last post so I thought I should try and find a clip of it being performed. In boxing, fighters go for the knockout but with mixed martial arts you can also apply various chokes and locks which for me makes it a lot more interesting. The Arm bar is when you have your opponents arm locked out straight and if he doesn't give up you just break it and beat him to death with the now severed limb.
