CT woman charged with quit claiming mothers house to herself
2009-09-03 15:59:00
In the following press release the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice announced that an Ansonia woman was arrested today for allegedly violating the fiduciary duties placed in her as attorney-in-fact for her 89-year old mother. Donna D. Kingston, age 61, of 6 Milan Street, Ansonia, was charged with three counts each of Larceny in the First Degree and Larceny in the Second Degree. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Ms. Kingston was entrusted with joint signatory on her mother’s bank accounts. In May and July of 2007, the daughter allegedly withdrew more than $72,000 by closing a CD account and withdrawing funds from a bank account owned by her mother. Less than $4,500 was left in the bank account, the warrant states. In May 2008, acting as her mother’s attorney-in-fact but without the mother’s consent, Ms. Kingston quit-claimed full ownership of her mother’s Ansonia home to herself, according to the warrant. China's Rio Tinto Arrests. A Rapid Fire Historical Perspective.
2009-08-19 19:22:00
Sometimes big events can be so complicated, controversial and unwieldy, there is hardly any point in reading current reports because they are likely to be so biased and/or inaccurate as to be of no value. In those instances, particularly when the underlying topic is not of huge interest to me, I generally pretty much stop reading articles on it and just wait for the dust to settle. I think the common wisdom is that real dust settling (and releasing of key documents) and gaining of perspective usually takes around 50 years. And though I would love to be able to look at China's recent Rio Tinto arrests from the perspective of fifty years hence, that is obviously not possible right now. So instead, I will turn to an excellent FT.com by Arthur Kroeber, somewhat mis-titled, "Rio Tinto arrests reveal China has growing-up to do." The thrust of the article is that China is a relatively safe place in which to do business, particularly as compared to Russia. I agree. China has done...

China's Rio Tinto Arrests. Everyone Just Move Along....
2009-07-14 12:26:00
By Steve Dickinson The recent detentions of four Rio Tinto executives has caused much concern. However, the situation has been misunderstood by most in the West because of a failure to understand the legal background. The Rio Tinto employees are accused of conducting industrial espionage. Specifically, they are accused of bribery and theft of trade secrets. These acts are crimes under Chinese law. Therefore, if the accusations are factual, the four Rio Tinto employees are subject to criminal sanction in China, with typical prison sentences of up to four years. The only thing unusual about this case is the decision of the Chinese government to treat the matter not as a commercial trade secrecy violation, but rather, as a theft of state secrets. I assume the reason for this is that the allegedly stolen information is in fact highly secret and damaging to the position of the Chinese companies in the iron ore price negotiations with Rio Tinto. The Chinese are probably avoiding a crim...

FBI Arrests 4 For Alleged Bomb Plot
2009-05-21 17:58:00
Something (really) stinks about this one: 4 Arrested for ‘Bomb Plot’ in New York More here. Once again, we find that the FBI did the following: provided explosives to a ‘cell’ (never mind that they were fake explosives, that’s actually irrelevant), infiltrated the group for years, connected this group to the mythical Al Qaeda, and allowed this ...

Iran Justifies Arrests of Baha'i Leaders With Sham Excuses
2008-05-22 23:20:00
Finally, the Iranian government, through its spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham, acknowledged the recent arrest of the leaders of the Baha'i community of Iran. Not surprisingly, Mr. Elham alleged two days ago in a press conference that they were arrested "for security reasons and not for their faith."The principal representative of the Baha’i International Community to the United Nations, Ms. Beni Dugal, strongly refuted this allegation.A full coverage of this response was published yesterday on the Baha'i World News Service website.Ms. Dugal rightfully stated:"The allegations are not new, and the Iranian government knows well that they are untrue.... The documented plan of the Iranian government has always been to destroy the Bahá’í community, and these latest arrests represent an intensification of this plan.... Two arrests for fuel hoarding, smuggling
2008-05-14 06:55:00
Police have arrested two people for hoarding and attempting to smuggle fuel as protests escalated nationwide against a government plan to raise fuel prices by up to 30 percent. As anger builds, the indecisiveness of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration as to when fuel prices will be raised has been blamed for the widespread panic buying.Southeast Sulawesi Police spokesman Adj. Racism in drug arrests.
2008-05-07 10:26:00
While the study wants to point to some racial motive, isn't it possible that more police resources are dedicated to higher crime/lower income areas? Could it be that the disparity is caused by income rather than skin color?

Now that's a giver and a keeper!Someone's getting fired."CSI's" Gary Dourdan was busted in Palm Springs yesterday on suspicion of possessing heroin, cocaine, ecstasy and prescription drugs. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ the actor was asleep in his car at 5:21 AM when they approached the vehicle and made the bust. We're told Dourdan was taken to Palm Springs jail where he posted $5,000 and bailed out.I'm confused on the 'suspicion of possessing' all those drugs cause either he had them or not! Sounds like he was having his own little bender party in his car. See that mug shot? That's exactly how I look in the morning... Be glad you don't sleep with me.source

2008-04-23 16:20:00
The Daily Star US authorities have arrested an American man on charges that he disclosed classified defense information, including on nuclear weapons, to Israel, the Justice Department said Tuesday. Ben-Ami Kadish worked as a mechanical engineer at a US Army weapons center in New Jersey when he provided the documents to Israel's consul for science affairs in New York over several years, the department said. US authorities also accused Kadish of illegally acting as an agent for Israel from 1979 to 2008 without notifying the US attorney general's office. The complaint alleges the consular official, identified in the indictment as "CC-1," gave Kadish lists of classified defense documents to obtain from the US Army's Armament Research, Development, and Engi-neering Center at the Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, New Jersey. On numerous occasions between 1979 and 1985, the suspect took classified documents to his residence in New Jersey, where CC-1 would photograph them, prosecutors cha...

Indonesia Arrests 2 Top Militants
2008-04-15 02:17:00
Indonesian police say they are questioning two top members of the regional terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah. Suspects Abdul Rohim and Agus Purwanto were returned to Indonesia after being arrested several weeks ago in Malaysia. Terrorism expert Sidney Jones says Abdul Rohim is thought to have replaced Zarkasih as Jemaah Islamiyah leader (emir), after Zarkasih's arrest last year. "He was a member of the central command, he is rumored to possibly be the new emir, or the caretaker emir [of Jemaah Islamiyah] ... the last known position that he had was a head of education for the central command," Jones explained."This is big because it is two more influential people, with one in particular at the top ranks of Jemaah Islamiyah, meaning that the police have pretty clearly penetrated the structure," Jones said. Police say Agus Purwanto is wanted in connection with violence in Poso, on Indonesia's eastern Sulawesi island, where sporadic violence between Muslims and Christians continues t...

USC arrests No. 4-6
2008-03-25 00:49:00
I’M NOT EVEN GOING TO COMMENT THIS TIME This one is a biggy. Highly touted redshirt freshman quarterback/savior Stephen Garcia was one of three University of South Carolina football players arrested Saturday for underage drinking. Offensive lineman Heath Batchelor and walk-on quarterback Zac Brindise were also charged when campus police caught them drinking near a campus dormitory. “He doesn’t make any excuses and did not want to put the fans and the university through this and have more negative attention brought towards him or the school,” Garcia’s attorney Neal Lourie said Monday. Garcia’s brother was charged with giving beer to a minor. Garcia enrolled early at South Carolina to get a jump start on spring practice but was suspended from the team a year ago after two arrests. In February 2007, he was charged with drunkenness and failure to stop for a police officer. About a month later, he was charged with malicious injury to personal propert...
Indiana VA Arrests Laptop Theft. Still Doesn't Know Whether There Was Full
2008-03-22 07:00:00
A former patient has been charged with the theft of a laptop from a VA hospital last November.  If you?ll recall, the Indianapolis VA center found itself short of a laptop, two desktops, and assorted peripheral equipment.  The items were stolen over Veterans Day weekend, ironically enough.  One of the stolen computers contained information on nearly 12,000 veterans.  The thief was identified from surveillance video recordings and has been apprehended; however, the laptop containing sensitive data has not been recovered.   I?ve heard how insiders pose something of a higher risk when it comes to security breaches, but this certainly is a twist.  When the story broke initially last November, there were some conflicting reports on the state of encryption on the computers.  Initially, it was reported that there was no encryption.  Later, the statement was amended to ?there may be encryption.?  Even now, with suspect under arrest, they still do...
