Art Education @ Art Schools in the US
2008-04-18 05:48:00 By Astrid Lee I’m often asked what in my opinion the best art schools are in the United States. So, I researched the topic before making my careful selection. Of course, some schools are better for film and others for fine art/paintings, and others again for art history. And this list is no more ...

A former corporate exec launches children?s art-education franchise with 40
2008-01-01 08:11:00 Tony Capobianco of Tampa, Florida, just spent the last three days dressed as a pirate. And he has seven more days to go of eye-patch wearing and numerous growls of ?Aaargh, shiver me timbers, me matie!?Capobianco, 43, is enjoying running his first-ever pirate-themed art camp for children eager to draw, sculpt, mold, paint, throw glitter around and laugh a lot. Although glitter and clay weren?t tools of the trade at his previous IBM and AT&T jobs, he has taken to his new position as an Abrakadoodle franchise owner and education director like a pirate takes to gold doubloons.A former manager of customer service and implementation, Capobianco, found himself laid off in May 2005 after 18 years in corporate America. Yet, he?s not shedding any tears about it; in fact, quite the opposite. ?I get up every morning now with a smile ? and sometimes glue ? on my face,? he says. ?I?ve gone from wingtips to sneakers, and I?m loving every minute of it.?Capobianco is one of a growing number of laid...

Art education
2007-11-04 16:46:00 One of the arguments for art education in the schools has long centered on perceived educational benefits in other subjects. In one of the many professional development trainings I attended as a teacher, the topic was on aligning art standards with TAAS (Texas Assessment of Academic Skills) objectives. My eyes glazed over as ...

Teaching Philosophy
2007-09-12 02:55:00 Philosophy of Teaching Joel Gargano May 1999 My grounding for teaching art comes from my compelling interest in the visual and conceptual mechanics of art and art processes and my ongoing fascination with the sensory experience of reality. I believe it is important as a student of art to be perceptually aware of the human and physical worlds ...
Chapter 2 - Curriculum Components, Identifying Student Art Progress
2007-09-05 03:52:00 So, this second chapter of the text I’m reading for Art Ed starts dealing with ideas of design elements to introduce to your elementary art students. It begins by stating that there’s no right or wrong way in art - simply the student’s individual way. Of course, we’ve all had art teachers who ...

Obama on teacher compensation
2007-07-11 06:19:00 Barack Obama is endorsing merit pay for teachers. His general idea is to create incentives for teachers and districts to innovate their teaching methods to improve student performance. How this will be substantiated for qualifying for the pay is another matter that’s not detailed. Andrew Sullivan blogs some push-back on the idea ...
Arts Education recognized this year
2007-05-02 11:30:00 Maybe arts education is making a comeback? I like this story… Music Teacher wins 2007 National Teacher of the Year Award “It’s essential for schools to offer classes like art or music and physical education because they are the only thing that motivates some students to come back to school day after day. If you ...
BioArt and art education?s history : new subjects to browse
2007-03-09 11:43:01 We’ve just added some new headings to our browse structure, focussing on BioArt and the history of art and design education. BioArt (Wikipedia has a helpful definition) is an emerging field of study, if not practice where visual art rubs against body modification and natural sciences. The body becomes both subject and medium, as art is created in the laboratory and the surgery. Meanwhile research into the way art and design was taught can yield some valuable insights into the society, pedagogy and art produced at certain moments in time, from John Ruskin’s teaching collection at Oxford University (where students copied ‘perfect’ examples of both nature and art) through the manufacturing focus of industrial Britain’s trade colleges (where teaching collections as diverse as shoes, fabrics and printing blocks were built up to train local apprentices) to the pioneering modernism of the Bauhaus. |
