OUTSOURCING COLLEGE EDUCATION
2012-01-31 07:43:00
Foreign Policy magazine recently published an eye-opening article about the economic value of an education abroad. What they did was compare the median cost of one year of an American undergraduate education ($9,000 USD) with that of an average international one ($4,000 USD). While money wasn't the only factor explored (there's also the question of quality, of course), the article does point out some rather startling examples, like how even though South Africa's University of Cape Town has a higher QS ranking than The University of Notre Dame, attending the latter is a whopping $32,000 USD more. Incredible! Check out the full piece here.
Stephen G. Bloom Angers Iowa Over Atlantic Article

Want to piss off a whole state of people on the eve of a big media day? Do what University of Iowa Professor Steve Bloom did, and write an article called “Observations From 20 Years of Iowa Life” that basically paints the state of Iowa as old, poor, undereducated, culture-challenged, backwoods, alcoholic, and white. 2011-12-15 18:00:00
So I read the If I was a poor black kid article. And like most people who read it I was outraged. The condescending tone was alarming. The writer made it seem like he could just step into the shoes of an underprivileged black child and make due with whatever he would have been available... Read more »
Warning: Depressing article on Christmas traditions
2011-11-29 15:19:00
I know it’s the season to be “merry,” but while trimming the tree yesterday, I had some ugly memories of Christmases past.  My parents fought over the tree every year.  It was ridiculous.  Each year though, I would try to look forward to putting up the tree and decorating it.  I was always hopeful that... WORLDWIDE UNREST
2011-10-04 08:55:00
A recent New York Times article highlights a very fascinating and intriguing movement that's sweeping the globe--unrest. Yes, we've seen it everywhere this year, from the Twitter-induced revolution in Libya, to the riots in London, to the more recent Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City. According to the article, more young people than ever before are outraged with politics and government corruption, and letting it be known! A big factor, the article also explains, has a lot to do with the leaderless Web culture that is so prominent among many of these young rebels. The resources available via the Internet have created almost perfect storm conditions for worldwide upheaval.

Article Series Asks Sathya Sai Alumni To Admit Large-Scale Male Sexual Abus
2011-08-13 02:00:00
The following excerpts are from my recent article series, the main burthen of which to say that alumni of Sathya Sai education institutions now have a unique opportunity. I was a lecturer, (1978-1979, at the Sathya Sai College, outside Bangalore, South India. By showing fearlessness, truthfulness and compassion for those who suffer - virtues endlessly preached in Sai institutions - they can tear aside the veil of taboo against addressing sexual abuse. It is a suppression extremely prevalent in India. But, then, extreme conditions are those in which courage in straight speaking and clear moral action are called for. Since, like many teachers everywhere, my fond hopes for my former students to turn out well, have never died, I would dearly wish to see them vividly live those vivid speeches that Sai Baba's handpicked students would give. Perhaps forever doomed to disappointment will be those many listeners who have fondly thought that the rousing speeches of these students predicte...

Social Work Today Article - Building a Practice in a Digital World
2011-06-02 23:30:00
Check out the article in Social Work Today - Building a Practice in a Digital World. It highlights how digital media - including blog websites - is being used in social work by clinicians. I was interviewed for it because of my use of blogging for my private child therapy practice, Child Therapy Chicago. I periodically post articles about children, parenting, child development, emotional/mental health, etc. both on my website and here, for ChicagoNow.I have gotten a lot of feedback that blogging about things you know or have expertise in can be very helpful to others and has a greater appeal than something that just provides static information about, say, a service; in my case, a private child therapy practice...

To Afridi , with Love . brilliant article by Maheen Sadiq
2011-03-31 12:48:00
There?s a lot to be said about the cricket tournament, especially our match against India. And it has a lot more to do with Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Gul?s bad luck, and Sachin Tendulkar?s good fortune. Cricket speaks to our nation in a way our government never has. And Shahid Afridi addressed the nation in a way our president never has ? unselfish, genuine, modest. So when Afridi apologized to Pakistan, millions listened and were humbled by the gesture. Our eyes filled with tears and our hearts with love and a strange kind of sorrow. Shahid Afridi, you need not apologize to the nation. We are proud of you and our entire cricket team! You didn?t bring back the cup, but any excitement, any happiness, any hope that Pakistanis have felt in the past few months is because of your brilliance. We?ve been hearing a lot of ?Pakistan needs something to celebrate,? but what Pakistanis really needed was something to look forward to, and the green team gave us that with the anticipation of each gam...

I'd like to play with you. I just want to win.McClanaghan lifted Rose's release point, gave him the mantra "no short shots" and made him hoist upward of 1,000 threes a day, off dribbles and ball screens, pick-and-rolls and pick-and-pops. He hollered at Rose, "If you want to be an All-Star, you can't miss these!" and Rose's practice percentage ticked up, from 60 to 68 to 72.Defenses were not going to sag off him anymore, but to take advantage of open driving lanes he had to throw...

How To Think of Article Topics by Indu Priya
2010-10-21 11:09:00
One of the most common questions I get from my subscribers is “How do I think of article topics?” so I thought I would address that today. Here is what I do. Every Sunday I make a list of things to be done in that week. I make a list of article topics to be written in that week. Now I go to Yahoo answers and search with my terms and observe the questions and answers in the search results. For example, if you’re a beautician, you can search with the terms “hair, pimples, hair coloring, tatoos” etc. With the above search terms I immediately found these interesting questions How can I look more attractive? How to remove dandruff? How to get rid of pimples? How to make your nails naturally white? What hair color dye damages your hair the less? And so on. I instantly found thousands of topics to write on. And remember that you can use the exact question as your title so that your article may be found in search results for related terms. Then, once you have wr...

Another Response to Dr Mercola?s Alkaline Water Article

A Quick Response to Dr Mercola?s Alkaline Water Article
2010-09-14 13:31:00
I’m disappointed that Dr Mercola led with such a sensationalist headline because the interview actually heavily supports the use of the Chanson. Online Article Defending Home Ownership - What do you think?
2010-09-03 00:32:00
So an online article in Yahoo Finance defends the benefits of home ownership versus renting. Despite steadily decreasing housing values due to foreclosures still occuring, and the sinking economy, home ownership still affords many conviniences that renting does not. That is if your mortgage is manageable in the event you experience a job loss, medical emergency, or family death. Think of it this way, you will have to live somewhere. Why not own the place where you live? By owning you are able to live where you want, manage your property the way to want, and even decorate the way you want. When renting, you have to ask permission to do certain things. The key is to not have a...
Govt Colony Bandra East - an article in Times of India
2010-07-31 15:04:00
With the redevelopment of Government Colony at Bandra (East) round the corner, nostalgic old-timers say it was the best place to grow up in."We had the feeling of living in one big family," said Syed Ismatulla Pasha, a resident from 1964 to 1977, who now lives at Andheri. "As kids, we played together and went to the same school. We practically lived in our neighbours' houses," he said. "Whenever there was wedding in the neighbourhood, all of us worked as if it was in our own family," recalled Pasha, general manager at an IT firm. The colony for state government employees was developed on 100 acres between 1958 and 1968 and its two and three-storey buildings have almost 5,000 flats for Class I to Class IV employees. Now, these are to be replaced with 12-storey buildings.Manisha Gujar spent 25 years there from 1961 to 1986 and is still attached to the colony. "I know every lane and every building," said the mother of two grown-up girls. She said that it was such a safe place that her ...

5 Steps to Writing Your First Article
2010-07-27 23:55:00
For many people, the idea of actually sitting down and writing an article stops them cold. You may wonder if you have anything worth saying, or if your writing is “good” enough for publication. If it makes you feel any better, virtually every writer ? even the professionals ? start out with the same fears. Really, the only way out is through. But once you have one article under your belt, the next ones become much easier. Here?s a five-step plan to have you on your way to your first article: 1. Brainstorm topics. What questions do you get about your topic area? What are the sticking points for newbies to your field? What equipment or specialized knowledge do people need to get started? Make a list of the most common questions you are asked about your business. For instance, if your niche is freezer cooking, people might want to know: *How will freezer cooking benefit me? *What equipment will I need? *What are the problems I might encounter? *How much money will it cost t...

Introduction to Article Submission
2010-05-11 18:10:00
A good way to build authority and search engine rankings for your site is through article directories. They usually don’t generate a lot of traffic, but they do provide quality one-way links back to your site, and there’s always the possibility of the articles becoming popular and generating direct traffic. The two biggest directories are www.goarticles.com and www.ezinearticles.com. These are the best in terms of quality and what they allow, but there are hundreds of others to choose from. If you’re interested, you can check out this list of about 2200. So what are the benefits, and what do you have to do? First of all, Don’t submit any article that aren’t quality. You don’t want your name on something that isn’t good work.  Another thing you DON’T want to do is submit duplicate content, especially stuff you haven’t written. This is bad for your article, and just bad all-around. So don’t just copy other&rsq...
Update to A.J. Pierzynski Article
2010-04-27 16:00:00
Today in the Chicago Tribune Pierzynski is quoted as saying "I feel like I'm doing everything right, I'm just not getting any hits." Seemingly to imply that he feels his slump is simply a string of bad luck, rather than a complete breakdown of his hitting mechanics. Pardon?!? So does that mean that reaching out after and poking balls that would normally hit someone standing in the right-handed batter's box and hitting grounders so soft that they wouldn't kill the brats from "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" if they were standing in the infield grass was the plan?! Unless "doing everything right" simply means not oversleeping for the game, putting your socks on before your shoes, and and remembering that you're left-handed, I would say you're doing a lot of things wrong, A.J.

Breaking down the greatest Spring Training article ever
2010-03-27 15:40:00
The maker of history.I wrote earlier this year about the cliche spring training stories you were bound to see. Well, this is what happens when they run out of ideas. Brilliance.I'm going to break down the greatest spring training story ever.Let's start with the title. "1st-ever game-ending for Griffey Jr." When I first saw this, I thought it had to be an old article that was accidentally linked. First of all, who keeps track of Spring Training walk-off grand slams? Second of all, this is not a news story. It would be like seeing a headline, "Ryan Frasier hits five homers with Eric Chavez in MLB The Show." Thirdly, I found link on the Chicago Tribune's sports page. And it was...
