Fascist Governments and the Freedom and Self-Expression of the Arts
2011-08-18 03:20:00 Any fascist government, regardless of ideological background has been wary or downright hostile toward the arts. Whether it is the Nazis burning books, the Communists banning and prohibiting works, or any other government or organization that actively censors works of art on the grounds of ideology, art is seen as a subversive threat to their hegemony, while the artist and intellectual are the marked and targeted enemies of such societies. Nonetheless, such governments have used the value of art for their own sake as a tool of propaganda. They ensure tight control on materials, their hand poised over the censorship button to select what kinds of messages may be transmitted, at the same time ensuring that their own standpoint is presented in a clear and visible manner. In other words, they take away the original and creative expression of artists and use the same method to fabricate their own brand of stifled and limited art to win over or rather to brainwash and lull the hearts of m...

More Arts Funding Boondoggles in Age of Obama Economic Meltdown
2011-06-11 21:34:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Yes, it's time for another tale of millions of your tax dollars wasted by the NEA on "art" in America. Supporters of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) like to puff themselves up as saviors of high "art" in lowbrow America. They love to imagine that without their advocacy for spending millions of our tax dollars to support dubious art projects, why, "art" in America would vanish. After all, you people are all uncultured, Neanderthals, you know? Bruce E. Walker recently alerted us of the newest boondoggle to come out of the NEA. This time the NEA is sponsoring hundreds of thousands of dollars to go to video game makers. Yes, video games. Apparently the...

Martial Arts is Good for the Soul
2010-12-22 15:26:00 It is really a privilege to work with people who want to learn something that you are good at and have spent a lifetime studying. I am really a professional student of sorts, training in the martial arts and then teaching it over and over to adults that realize it may be their calling. Although MMA's popularity, Ninja Turtles cartoons, Jackie Chan movies and even videos games like Mortal Kombat have motivated people to come by my school, their interest is really grounded in the same things I loved as a kid; Bruce Lee, Sugar Ray Leonard, Kung Fu theatre and Chuck Norris. For whatever reason their parents could not get them into martial arts as a kid, so many...
Women in Mixed Martial Arts: Fighting for Equality Part I
2010-12-21 15:44:00 Revisiting my Favorite PostsA conversation about the state of women in the sport of mixed martial arts should begin with a glance back at two combative sports with a long history: boxing and wrestling. Although women's boxing first appeared in the Olympic games as a demonstration in 1904, it really took the entire 20th Century for it to gain acceptance within the athletic community. Despite strong social stereotypes and traditional points of views on the role women should have within our society, female fighters have been given several venues to showcase their skills, but lacked a fan base. Although organizations like The Swedish Amateur Boxing Association and The National Wrestling Alliance provided opportunities to see women part-take in the...

Legendary MAD cartoonist Sergio Aragones marginalizes Mr. Media!
2010-10-29 00:56:00 Sergio Aragones at work, image by Laughing Squid via FlickrBy BOB ANDELMAN (email) My first issue of MAD magazine was purchased near the checkout counter at a Stop & Shop supermarket in my hometown of North Brunswick, New Jersey, in July 1970. I?ll never forget the cover: a parody of the summer?s big hit, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, featuring a couple of actors named Redford & Newman. I no longer have it, but I suspect that that was my first exposure to legendary artist Sergio Aragones. --------------Listen to my SERGIO ARAGONES interview!-------------- Sergio has been producing illustrated gags for MAD since 1963 and for many fans, his work and the humor mag?s name are forever entwined. He has been one of the Usual Gang of Idiots for longer than I?ve been able to spell ?ee-diots.? Five Strategies I?m Using to Help Dad Beat the Stock Market
2010-10-26 19:30:00 You might remember that back in June my 63-year-old dad decided to let me begin managing his $100,000 retirement account at Vanguard. The goal was to help him get better returns than he was earning with a money market fund. And while I’ve been talking about retirement matters, CDs, and other topics lately, the big unanswered question in the room has been: “So how are things actually going in that new portfolio?”The short answer: In just three months, dad is already up many multiples of what he would have gotten from his money market fund… . . . → Full Story: Five Strategies I?m Using to Help Dad Beat the Stock Market

I Was Bullied, Martial Arts Helped Me
2010-10-16 15:51:00 20/20 on ABC featured a story last night, Friday, October 15th on bullying. We have heard a lot of about various of forms of bullying this year, stories of intimidation and ridicule children over clothes, style, looks, sexual orientation, school associations or size. These are only a few examples of how children prey on eachother. I am sure most of your are aware of the recent cases where several teenagers have taken their own lives after being victimized by bullies. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, around 160,000 kids fear going to school because of being bullied. Most of us can remember witnessing this type of behavior. For me, experiencing being bullied when I was in third grade by a...

Best Martial Arts Movie Posters (If Best=Bad=Cheesy)
2010-10-04 16:24:00 These martial arts movie posters are awesome! They are the best, if best means bad with a side of cheesy. I would hang any of these in my school (and some already are). Michael Jackson's Kids Learning Martial Arts
2010-07-24 20:58:00 The martial arts is a perfect activity for celebrity kids. It is an environment where the playing field is equal. Because of the engrained discipline and the hierarchy system, martial arts can really give a highly privileged child a sense of normalcy. The late pop star Michael Jackson I am sure struggled with providing a sense or norm for his children, Blanket, Paris and Prince. Michael Jackson's children have been seen many times coming and going from their karate school in Encino. Blanket, Prince and Paris are all students of the school and have earned their yellow belt. The children of the legendary Michael Jackson are often photographed with giant smiles on their faces leaving the karate academy. pictures taken...

Future Perfect: Arts and Learning
2010-06-06 00:15:00 The phrase "the children are our future", widely disseminated through the vocal talents of the troubled singer Whitney Houston, has morphed into a cozy cliché that allows us to demonstrate concern for children without having to do a damned thing. Sentimental intentions take the place of meaningful action. But as concerned citizens, we need to ask an important question in response to this state of non-affairs:What would we do if we took the idea that "the children are our future" seriously? But before we try to answer that question, let's poke around some in the cliché itself. Here are the lyrics to the song that the phrase comes from:"Greatest Love Of All" I believe the children are our are future Teach them...
Teaming Up With A Big Company All To Support The Arts
2010-05-31 03:01:00 I decided last week to start focusing on events for this summer, and I decided to put my first event together on June 11th. And this event will not be for a small dance studio or something similar, but rather for the big automobile company, Toyota. Yes, Toyota, American's most hated car company. Well, creator and manager of the company Tetsua Kaida happens to be one of the biggest supporters of the arts, and even if company headquarters are in Japan, he is supporting many artists here in America. And for that, he has my respect....
You will not wanna be sedated before finishing 'I Slept with Joey Ramone'
2010-05-24 15:14:00 Cover via Amazon By BOB ANDELMAN Joey Ramone wasn?t really Joey Ramone. Most people know that the ?Ramones? name was for the stage, although few sought out and became their stage persona more completely than the former Jeffry Hyman, a spindly, troubled boy from Queens. If you?re a Ramones fan?or just fascinated with stories of familial disfunction?you?re going to find the new book, I Slept With Joey Ramone: A Family Memoir, an irresistible attraction. The story was written by Joey?s younger brother, Mitchell Hyman, a.k.a. Mickey Leigh, with help from Legs McNeil, a long-time friend of both brothers and the author of the classic music history, Please Kill Me: The Uncensored History of Punk. Legs, today making his second appearance on Mr. Media, got to know Joey and Mickey in the late ?70s when he and John Holmstrom co-founded the legendary Punk magazine. I got to know Legs through his later contributions to Spin magazine. His writing always comes with a twist; he?s never dull. L...

'30 Rock' star Grizz Chapman enjoys spotlight in tonight's season finale
2010-05-20 20:09:00 By BOB ANDELMAN There may be at least three weddings figuring into tonight?s season finale of ?30 Rock? on NBC, which airs at 9:30 p.m.: ? Tracy and Dotcom are arguing over which one of them will be best man for Grizz. ? Bride-to-be Cirie wants Liz Lemon to wear a yellow bridesmaid?s dress for her wedding?a Vietnamese size 2. ? And with Liz having proposed instant marriage to Wesley, even she may be going off the market?except that Matt Damon is guest starring in tonight?s episode. Will he save her? Naah, probably not. It?s a big night for the show?s supporting cast?for no one more so than Grizz, about whom we?ve made two shocking discoveries: 1) The actor who plays half of Tracy?s entourage undergoes dialysis three times a week for kidney failure, and; 2) His character and Tina Fey?s have a secret, sexual past. 2010-05-15 20:22:00 By BOB ANDELMAN What kind of things did you do in high school that affected you for the rest of your life? For Mark Griffin, watching a Vincente Minnelli movie, On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, gave him both a career?and an obsession. Oh, and a new book, too: A Hundred or More Hidden Things: The Life and Films of Vincente Minnelli. Griffin, who writes film reviews for the Boston Globe, MovieMaker and Genre, has written and compiled and exhaustive biography and filmography of the late director who was known as much for films such as Meet Me in St. Louis, An American in Paris and Gigi as for marrying Judy Garland and fathering Liza Minnelli. Minnelli was also the subject of much innuendo and rumor, during his lifetime and since, about his sexual orientation. Mark Griffin Blog ? Invading the privacy of Vimeo general manager Dae Mellencamp? Not me!
2010-05-13 13:57:00 By BOB ANDELMAN Everybody knows what YouTube is. Viral videos, 10 minutes or less in length, uploaded by everyone from the broadcast networks to your neighbor?s cell phone. But, contrary to popular belief, it?s not the only treasure chest of video entertainment and wonder. Take, for example, Vimeo. It?s a Youtube alternative with a cleaner user interface, easy to follow instructions and can even accept user-made, high definition videos. I don?t know everything that differentiates Vimeo from its competition, which is why I?ve invited Dae Mellencamp on the show today. She is the senior vice president and general manager of Vimeo and I?m hoping she can give us all a much clearer idea of Vimeo?s potential and how we can all put it to work for us. Vimeo Website ? Black slavery novel 'Wench' brings out anger, frustration in readers
2010-05-11 17:04:00 By BOB ANDELMAN How many novels have you ever read that actually upset you? Moved you, frustrated you, left you unsure how you felt about the story itself? That?s the way I felt reading Dolen Perkins-Valdez?s first novel, Wench. I read a lot of books?it comes with the territory when they call you Mr. Media. But this novel left me aggravated. And I?m not saying that?s a bad thing; not at all. There?s nothing wrong with a writer pulling a visceral reaction out of a reader. The subject matter is what did it to me?Wench is the story of four black slave women living in the mid-1800s, suffering whippings, beatings, rapes, and the outright sale of their children borne of unions with white slave masters?pretty gruesome, hardcore content. It was not a pretty time, of course, and this is not a pretty book. It should make for an interesting conversation with the author. Dolen Perkins-Valdez Website ? Twitter ? Phish biographer Parke Puterbaugh drops in on Mr. Media Radio
2010-04-29 12:56:00 Cover of Phish: The Biography By BOB ANDELMAN Must be my lifelong resistance to getting stoned, but I?ve never been a huge fan of jamband music. Dave Matthews is okay in small does, as is the Grateful Dead, and to be perfectly honest, I?ve had little exposure to the music of the band Phish?and that?s spelled P-H-I-S-H for those of you who listen regularly but may be musically clueless. But what I do recognize is a good story, and that?s what Phish?s official biographer?and former Rolling Stone magazine staff writer?Parke Puterbaugh has in his new book Phish: The Biography. 80 Stand-up comedians walk into a bar... and wind up in a documentary, 'I A
2010-04-24 02:41:00 By BOB ANDELMAN Jordan Brady has been on stage, told the jokes, suffered the hecklers and luxuriated in the belly laughs. He also knows the pitfalls of standup comedy and comedians. So who better to chronicle their lives than one of their own? I just finished watching I Am Comic, Brady?s funny, fast-moving tribute to the men and women who make their living analyzing their lives, picking at their own zits on stage, humiliating you, me and that fat, obnoxious idiot who made the mistake of sitting in the front row. More than 80 people were interview for the film, including comics such as: Sarah Silverman, Carlos Mencia, Jim Gaffigan, Jeff Foxworthy, Tim Allen, Nick Kroll, Kathy Griffin, Dave Attell, Janeane Garofalo, Carrot Top, Louis C.K, Roseanne Barr, Todd Glass, Iliza Shlesinger, and Phyllis Diller.
