Ash Wednesday

AshesTom Conry1. We rise again from ashes, from the good we've failed to do.We rise again from ashes, to create ourselves anew.If all our world is ashes, then must our lives be true,An offering of ashes, an offering to You.2. We offer You our failures, we offer You attempts; The gifts not fully given, the dreams not fully dreamt.Give our stumblings direction, give our visions wider view,An offering of ashes, an offering to You.3. Then rise again from ashes, let healing come to pain;Though spring has turned to winter, and sunshine turned to rain. The rain we'll use for growing, and create the world anew,From an offering of ashes, an offering to You.4. Thanks be to the Father, who made us like Himself. Thanks be to His Son, who saved us by His death. Thanks be to the Spirit, who creates the world anew,From an offering of ashes, an offering to You.
Ash Wednesday 2008
2008-02-06 16:32:00
Today is Ash Wednesday. It marks the first day of the Lenten season and occurs forty (40) days (hence the local term,“cuaresma”, for Lent) before Easter. I’m glad that Conne and I were able to go home in time to attend the 7:30PM mass and have ash imposed on our foreheads. And I noticed that the ...
Ash Wednesday
2008-02-06 16:07:00
As we enter this season of Lent we are reminded of our mortality and our need for God?s grace.  The 40 days of Lent are reminiscent of the 40 years the Israelites wandered in the wilderness before reaching the promised land, and also of the 40 days Jesus was alone in the wilderness, fasted and ...
Lent: Ash Wednesday Prayer
2008-02-06 13:48:00
By William Loader, 15 February 1999(extinguish candles)The darkness asks us questions. You are out there and we do not see.You invite us into the night, the stillness, the loneliness, the desert place. We cannot see our shadow; the cold damp of unknowing rises up from beneath our feet.We tread cautiously, tentatively. We are afraid, afraid of ghosts haunting us with pectres of guilt and shame. We would like to run back, reach the river bank, swim the Jordan, sit in the sun by the sea, mending our nets. But you have brought us here- with no bread. When we look we can see only ourselves, our darkness. When we read, it is invisible words which cannot be grasped, thoughts we cannot clutch, hope we cannot capture.Yet the wild honey remains a taste in our mouth, a memory for a new day.Why have you brought us here? What miracle will you perform for us?The darkness sighs around us, dense with your unseen presence, close to our breathing, close to our breathing.O darkness, enlighten us, embrace us w...

Protestant churches in recent years have increasingly turned to the rite to increase spirituality and devotional preparation for Easter Sunday among their members.
Resources for Ash Wednesday and Lent
2008-02-06 07:09:00
Today is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. So as to enrich your mind and answer any questions you may have about this season, I have constructed the following Q&A, as well as a list of resources with which you can learn more. If anyone has any questions, just let me know.Pax Christi, phatcatholic - - - - - - - - - -Question #1: What is Lent?Answer: From the Pocket Catholic Dictionary, we read: LENT. The season of prayer and penance before Easter. Its purpose is to better prepare the faithful for the feast of the Resurrection, and dispose them for a more fruitful reception of the graces that Christ merited by his passion and death. In the Latin Rite, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and continues for forty days, besides Sundays, until Easter Sunday. Ash Wednesday occurs on any day from February 4 to March 11, depending on the date of Easter.Originally the period of fasting in preparation for Easter did not, as a rule, exceed two or three days. But by the time of the Cou...

ELVIS PERKINS - "Ash wednesday"
2007-06-22 11:35:00
Trinidad and Tobago Carnival: Part 10 - Ash Wednesday
2007-03-23 05:30:00
After the frenzied crescendo of Carnival Tuesday all merriment and debauchery ends (or is supposed to end) with the ushering in of Ash Wednesday and the start of the Roman Catholic observance of Lent. My father tells me that ‘back in the... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]
Ash Wednesday
2007-02-25 10:39:00
This was taken at approximately 6:30pm in my office on Wednesday 21st February 2007. I don't know why I took it. At the time I found it beautiful somehow, but it's also a sea of little metaphors for what was going on in my head at the time, perhaps even literally. This could also have been one of the last things I saw. It wasn't.
Happy Flash Wednesday
2007-02-22 01:07:00
As many of you probably know, today is Ash Wednesday. What some of you might NOT know is that I have a special affinity for The Flash, and that was even my nickname for a little while (a little while which has yet to end). And since today is also my birthday, I worked a little linguistic magic and combined the two into Flash Wednesday. And look, everyone got me just what I wanted -- a witty rejoinder!! Go ahead, make my day! Also, the 107th Carnival of Education is up and running over at History Is Elementary. Be sure to put on your crash helmet and elbow pads before heading over, then charge right through that bad boy!
"Ash Wednesday"
2007-02-21 13:31:00
I wrote this back in college. I don't claim it is "good," but I still like it. Perhaps some of you might, too. Ash Wednesday And again I feel the tiny bits of my Self rubbed on me; those familiar words I Hear again; a prayer; and then it's finished. When do we learn the meaning of ashes? Even at death, they say, light shimmers in Dark tunnels and His voice narrates us through. No--not at
an ash wednesday story
2007-02-21 12:54:00
Conne and I heard mass a while ago at Greenbelt Chapel, which is about a block away from my office.Today is "Ash Wednesday" by the way, an important day for Catholics. It marks the first day of Lent. And is the only day that Catholics actually get to boldly walk around bearing a symbol of their faith, the cross-shaped, darkish ash that are marked on their foreheads. What the priest said during his homily was very interesting (yes, I actually DO listen to homilies at times! Ha!). He had an acronym for each of the letters A, S and H, of Ash Wednesday. And here's how it goes:A = Admit or AcknowledgeWe have to admit or acknowledge our sins and our imperfection. This is the first step towards change.S = Step forwardWhen you have your foreheads marked with an ashen cross, you actually step forward, among peers. And you do so because you acknowledge your sins and are willing to change. Stepping forward means being committed.H = HopeWe have to do our part in mending our ways. But we also do...
