Buffett's US$5B inspired Asia
2008-09-24 16:00:00 Asia opened positive and closed higher encouraged by Buffett's overnight US$5B purchase of goldman sachs. I was stopped out of my S&P long overnight. Did i turn long? Not yet... i still ain't see resistance broken yet. The way where market fell from resistance with high volume yesterday may suggest strong hands unloading. To be sure, the next time we are at resistances, the selling will come with heavy volume yet again.Friday is the dateline of the bailout plan. Currently the market is undecided with neither the bulls nor the bears dare to take much risk. The bailout plan can cause the market to swing either way.... i am keeping a lookout and watching how market is anticipating the move.Again most of the prices are in the middle of nowhere, during this volatile times, it is prudent to wait for the price at significant levels.DISCLAIMER: The contents in this website are for fun reading and must not be taken as a buy or sell advice. Mangrobang's works combine naturalism and stylization, the conceptual and the pictorial. His subjects and themes often revolve community and fishing scenes which comprise his environment as a resident of the flood-prone and coastal city of Malabon.A multi-awarded painter, Mangrobang is a national finalist in the 2008 Philip Morris Philippines Art Awards. He was also cited as a finalist in the water media category of the 2002 Metrobank Young Painter Competition and the 2000 and 1999 Shell National Students Art Competition.Mangrobang holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (major in Pain...
Southeast Asia: Perspectives on Compliance
2008-09-03 02:00:00 This past weekend, I left Southeast Asia after a week-long trip to Bangkok, Singapore and Manila. The week was spent in back-to-back meetings with customers and our local sales teams, and the majority of our discussions centered on PCI DSS and compliance in general. One clear takeaway: Compliance is one of THE growing areas of concern for businesses in the region. I found the degree to which customers in the region were concerned about compliance to be a bit of a surprise. I say 'surprise' because I often hear that compliance isn't as much of an issue outside of the U.S. From what we're seeing, though, the regulatory environment in non-U.S. geos, including Southeast Asia, is becoming more complicated...

Silk Road 'banks' on Asia
2008-08-15 07:00:00 "The Asian rally is under way," says Yiannis Moustrous (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2277), editor of The Silk Road Investor (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2277). Here, he looks at a favored pair of NYSE-listed banks; one in India, the other in South Korea."The latest rally started from depressed levels, particularly in comparison to other regions of the world. "Further, the current oil price weakness--if sustained--will act as a positive catalyst for Asian economies that are net oil importers."Extreme selling conditions usually set the stage for a rally, which can be rather substantial when a lot of cash is on the sidelines, a lot of short positions need to be covered and marginally positive news emerges. These conditions are currently in place in Asia."The previous selloff is giving us the opportunity to add one more position to our India holdings: ICICI Bank (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=ibn) (NYSE: IBN (http://www.the...

Asia catching up with Dow
2008-07-15 09:42:00 After 3 weeks of inactivity, finally the market hots up. Stocks started the brief rebound last week and today it all came into an abrupt end. I am only too glad that the market tanked today otherwise it is really very difficult to understand it. At least now i know the simple rules of the market still works and i am able to get the direction right. Despite all these talk about de-couple from US bla bla bla, today Asia market decided to finally cave in and joined the US in the south pole. As i am writting this, Dow has broken the 11k psychological support. Next major support will be at 10,700 thereabouts. Asia has a long way to catch up since the Mar'08 low is still intact. HSI support is targetted at 20,800 and STI? 2743 should go first. How do we explain the selling in S-shares? simple, all you need to do is understand why does it go up in such high volume? One of my traing principle, if the stock has higher than usual volume and the price doesn't go higher, it has to c...
Asia De-coupled with US
2008-07-13 10:02:00 While dow broke to new low for 2008, HSI, Nikkei & STI are still staying above the Mar'08 low. What is happening here? Nan dao, we are really de-coupled with Dow? The super-power is no longer Dow but China? Perhaps history is in the making for all of us to witness how China takes over as super power. Friday's strong closing came after days where market teased to the downside. I was definitely looking at a break to the downside, however market holds steady. The fact that it can holds steady despite Dow keeps going lower is a cause of concern for my shorts. I just checked the Dow's chart, still as ugly only thing is again it is in the state of oversold a rebound is likely. Even on STI, i wouldn't immediately call it the reversal. There are methods to identify reversal and the born of an uptrend and i will rather wait for these tell tale signs. The rebound on Friday brought many China stocks near their resistance. I will be waiting to see, what to see? If any of thos...
A North-South Chinese Mix Cline in SE Asia?
2008-07-11 16:24:00 The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here. Updated July 12. I am republishing this post published earlier this month because I added some photos.A question from the comments about the Are SE Asians Australoids? article:Aren't Khmer a little more Australoid than people in Vietnam (at least Northern Vietnamese), most Thai, and Laotians? There seems to be a clear cline in Southeast Asia, the areas bordering China seem to have more NE Mongoloid Admixture than those of the Malay archipelago and the Khmer. I'm basing this on appearance and not genes, which you pointed out, rightly so, as being misleading. This question keeps popping up because so many folks are convinced, based primarily on appearance, that many SE Asians are part-Australoid.First of all, the Vietnamese, Filipinos, Thai and Khmer are all quite close to the Southern Chinese genetically. Of these, believe it or not, the Fili...

Banking stocks & Straits Asia
2008-06-25 09:47:00 After performing my usual 4 steps screening with XPertTrader, banking stocks and Straits Asia appeared to look interesting technically. For banking stocks, they will have a short term rally should Ben unexpectedly raise the interest rate. From the charts, DBS and OCBC looks like reversing. For Straits Asia, I see a possible chance to do counter-trend trading here. With it's well known volatility, this short-term opportunity should be worth taking a look.Golden Agri together with the rest of the agriculture stocks got hammered today. This furthers reinforced my belief that i should not be riding on trends as there is non to speak of in this current market. It is better to take profit at resistance level or support level if short. Just checked the news and saw that oil slips $4 on increase in inventory. Tsk tsk... news must have leaked out during Asia trading hours, otherwise why did these stocks lao sai in anticipations of the news? Price moves ahead of news my friends....STI t...

Indonesia Raises Key Rate as Asia Battles Inflation
2008-06-05 10:54:00 Indonesia's central bank increased its benchmark interest rate for a second straight month, as surging food and energy prices force policy makers across Asia to tackle inflation.Governor Boediono, in his first policy decision since taking over the post, raised the rate used as an indication for bill sales to 8.5 percent from 8.25 percent. Five of 17 economists in a Bloomberg News survey predicted the decision, announced by the central bank in Jakarta today. The other 12 expected a half-point rise.Bank Indonesia expects the rupiah to strengthen, which may also help slow inflation to a ``single-digit'' figure next year, Deputy Governor Budi Mulya said today.Financial services companies such as PT Bank Mega are preparing to raise lending rates, said Daniel Budirahaju, credit director at Bank Mega. ``Definitely we will raise rates because the cost of funds will increase,'' he said.Costlier wheat, soybean and oil pushed Indonesian inflation to 10.4 percent in May, the fastest in 20 ...
