Another Asian Fukushima Imminent?
2012-01-02 18:45:00
Taiwan imports 99 percent of its energy, which is vital to its rapidly industrializing economy. The island nation’s electricity demand was recently growing at almost 5 percent per year, but this is slowing to about 3.3 percent per annum to 2013. Nuclear power has been a significant part of the electricity supply for two decades and now provides 17 percent of the country’s overall energy needs. But this has come at a potential cost. The country’s three nuclear power plants (NPPs) comprise four General Electric boiling water reactors and two Westinghouse pressurized water reactors. Taiwan launched its nuclear power project in 1972 with the construction of a General Electric boiling water reactor (BWR) at the Chinshan 1 . . . → Read More: Another Asian Fukushima Imminent?

Al Sadd Defy Odds To Take Asian Crown
2011-11-08 06:31:00
?I think I am not in the best condition to analyse it. At this moment, my feeling is stronger than my reason.?Those were the words of Jorge Fossati, the coach of newly-crowned Asian Champions Al Sadd, deep in the bowels of Jeonju World Cup Stadium on Saturday evening. The Uruguayan had just watched a fantastic final in which his team overcame favourites and host Jeonbuk Motors thanks to a penalty shootout. 120 minutes ended 2-2 in a game that the Koreans had the chances to win but the Qataris held out and took the shootout 4-2 thanks to two saves from man of the match Mohamed Saqr.?I am happy for everyone but especially for Saqr,? said Fossati. ?When I came back to the club in January, many people told me that he couldn?t play anymore and that he was too old. Today, he was fantastic but that was not the only game in this competition in which he was fantastic. Jeonbuk players did not miss the penalties, he saved them. In the game also, he made two or three very important saves. One i...

Just as I landed in South East Asia, the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit Japan (where I was supposed to land shortly after). Upon seeing the immediate destruction on twitter, I knew I needed to somehow help the victims upon my return, where I figured I could do the most good. Simultaneously, an overwhelming amount of requests from my kind & generous facebook & twitter friends asked that I put together an impactful event that they too can join, so that we can all help the victims of this tragedy together. As I made my way home, I strategized with my Sunda business partner Aeron Lancero who took immediate initiative working with the Japanese Consulate on our behalf, along...

Can the PGA and LPGA Tour bring Asian golf to the ROW?
2010-10-28 17:30:00
The popularity of golf is escalating to a fevered frenzy in Asia but can the PGA and LPGA Tour help bring this emerging market to the rest of the world? With the WGC-HSBC Champions event combining the talents of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson for a possible dream match and Michelle Wie needing a bodyguard to keep fans at bay during the LPGA Malaysia, Asian golf fans are coming out in droves to witness star power in professional golf. The Asian golf market is relatively unknown here in the USA but has plenty of events during the season sanctioned by the Asian Tour, OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour. It appears as if all of the Tours operate independently of each other instead of combining strength to create one professional commission with larger purses and better known talent. The LPGA has already established the Japan and Korean Tours but the Ladies Asian Golf Tour remains a separate entity. In July, Tim Finchem made rumblings that there may be more PGA Tour events springing up i...

Crapping on Asian carp "evidence"
2010-10-19 00:11:00
Asian carp. (Bottom) Here's what we're supposed to do: Base on unreviewed research, the locks on the Illinois waterway must be closed to prevent the invasion of Asian Carp into the Great Lakes. The demand to close off a vital transportation link for the state and the Midwest was repeated today in a hearing on a suit filed by five states. Here's how the Tribune reported it:Much of today's hearing again focused on the reliability of so-called eDNA testing, a method of extracting DNA from loose samples of fish matter collected in the water. The research, which had never before been used to track the presence of fish, was developed by David Lodge and scientists and biologists at the University...
What Tiger Woods considers The Crowning Jewel of All of Asian Golf
2010-09-15 20:34:00
It took just one staging of the WGC-HSBC Champions to dispel all doubts as to whether a World Golf Championships event could succeed in Asia. Tim Maitland reports on how the Shanghai tournament has spearheaded another step up the ladder for tournament golf in Asia. At some stage between the inception of the HSBC Champions in 2005 and Tiger Woods last year calling it ?the crowning jewel of all of Asian golf", golf in Asia made a transition. Not that the autumn swing to the East was ever just a bit of fun - the big names that did travel certainly lived up to their billing ? but now there is little question that Asia has taken its place at the top table of top-class tournament play. The who, what, why, when, where of Asia?s coming of age? The ?where?? is a no-brainer. The venue: the Nelson & Haworth design Sheshan International Golf Club. The ?who?? or ?what?? is just as easy: the HSBC Champions - whether through its winners-only fields, the champions it produce...

Pei Wei - Asian Diner

Asia Tops Twitter World – India 4th Among Asian Countries
2010-07-06 08:50:00
A recent study by Semiocast, a micro-messaging company in France, reveals that Asia has outshined North America as the biggest user of Twitter. They contribute about 37% of the total tweets in the micro-blogging site. Major contributors of this feat are Japan, Indonesia and South Korea. It was also found that USA, though being the first twitter nation, contributed just about 25% of the total tweets. This is 5% lower than what it was in March 2010. Check the graph below Though the US is going at the right pace, Asian countries are quickly picking up. The continent wise share of tweets now goes this way: Asia- 37%, North America- 31%, South America- 15%, Europe- 14%, Africa- 1.5% and Oceania- 1.5%. If we see the Asian region, Japan leads the trend, followed by Indonesia and South Korea. India is at fourth place with less than 1% of the total tweets on Twitter. Though India contributes less in terms of the quantity of tweets (india contributes less that 1% of total tweets), the social...

Alderman Feasts on Asian Carp: Bottom Feeder Eats a Bottom Feeder
2010-04-11 04:35:00
-By Warner Todd Huston I just hate cannibalism like this when one bottom feeder eats another. West side Alderman Walter Burnett (27th Ward) joined the Fox News Chicago team to eat some Asian carp per his ridiculous suggestion early last week that "the poor" could eat the Asian carp and cure the problem that Lake Michigan faces over the invasive species. For those unaware of the trouble with the bony Asian carp, the fish has been rapidly invading Illinois waterways and is headed straight for Lake Michigan. The Asian carp has no natural predators here and scientists think that the fish will wildly over populate and drive out other, native species. But, Oh Alderman Burnett has the most ingenious solution....
More on the Asian carp issue
2010-02-23 03:24:00
Bighead Carp, with a mouth this big filtering all the zooplankton and micro organisms in its path, you can see how the fry from gamefish would be wiped out in a matter of time. Last week I attended the Walleye Chicago fishing club meeting.  The discussion was to be on the Asian Carp issue.  I learned that a member from the IL DNR was supposed to attend this meeting to give a talk about this issue but unfortunatley could not attend. One of the members, Tom Cooney has been following this issue for some time and showed a multi page report that was written by Philip Willink, Ph.D., The Field Museum / Fish Division. Cooney noted that the report...

Tom Cooney from Walleyes Chicago is going to give a presentation on the current status of the Asian Carp problems in Illinois at thje Walleyes Chicago fishing club meeting at the Bass Pro Shops stroe in Bolingbrook.  The meeting will be held from 7 to 9 PM Thursday, February 18. Tom has spent a great deal of time researching the situation and gathering information from all of the different parties that have a stake in this situation. There seems to be a great deal of misinformation that has been published on this and Tom will present a "no spin" fact based presentation on the issues. The presentation will cover the history of the asain carp, what the ecological ramification of...
Reason and Asian Carp
2010-02-06 18:06:00
Instead of demanding that the entire Illinois waterway be choked off to keep Asian carp out of Lake Michigan, calmer minds have started working on a cooperative way of meeting the threat. Lots of things are going on next week regarding the issue. From the Tribune:On Monday, Gov. Pat Quinn plans to meet with governors from Michigan and Wisconsin at the White House to hash out a plan to keep the invasive species out of the Great Lakes. Some think the Obama administrat-ion will use the occasion to introduce its own Asian carp attack plan, using the resources of the Fish and Wildlife Service, Army Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies. On Tuesday, lawmakers will debate proposed Asian carp legislation at a congressional hearing of the House Transportation and...

There's a lot about the invasive Asian carp on the internet, but the best reference that I have seen yet comes from our own Field Museum. Asian carp uproar is smelling a little fishy
2009-12-08 19:51:00
Wait, someone wants to crimp a world engineering marvel that made Chicago what it is because some fat, ugly carp are swimming in it? Killing Asian Carp - a racist notion

Don't eat the sushi. How dare they go after the Asian Carp. So they're eating valuable plankton and nutrients from the lakes. They need to live too. Although the name of the fish is somewhat irrelevant, the species of fish has an appetite for destruction, eating surface algae and devouring the diets of much smaller fish who nurture the food chain for larger fish.   See story containing this clip...State officials are waging chemical war today on Asian carp in a six-mile stretch of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal near Romeoville, a last-ditch effort to contain the spread of the invasive fish into Lake Michigan.
