Millions of Americans are drinking water tainted with drugs
2008-03-09 23:25:00 If you were grossed out by the generally reasonable idea of drinking recycled sewer water to preserve supplies, you’ll love this–as many as 41 million Americans have been drinking water tainted with trace elements of pharmaceuticals of all shapes, sizes, and effects: ? Officials in Philadelphia said testing there discovered 56 pharmaceuticals or byproducts in treated drinking water, including medicines for pain, infection, high cholesterol, asthma, epilepsy, mental illness and heart problems. Sixty-three pharmaceuticals or byproducts were found in the city’s watersheds. ? Anti-epileptic and anti-anxiety medications were detected in a portion of the treated drinking water for 18.5 million people in Southern California. ? Researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey analyzed a Passaic Valley Water Commission drinking water treatment plant, which serves 850,000 people in Northern New Jersey, and found a metabolized angina medicine and the mood-stabilizing carbamazepine...

Homeschooling with Asperger Syndrome
2007-10-23 01:00:00 Our oldest son is 13 and has Asperger Syndrome, a disorder on the autism spectrum. We tried charter schools and public schools with him and he just did not fit in. Part of the reason for this was simply because the teachers were not willing to make accommodations for a normal looking child, even though medically they knew he has challenges. Homeschool works best for us and it is HIGHLY doubtful we ever go another route again. The two single most important things you have to understand when homeschooling a child on the autism spectrum are 1) breaks are needed more often, and 2) slow and steady wins the race. Aspies especially get frustrated more easily because many times these children are on the high functioning side of the spectrum and they are very hard on themselves. It is not uncommon for Caleb to smack himself on the head and say "stupid, stupid, stupid" when he gets something wrong. It's also not uncommon for an incident like this to end with him being so wiped out e...

Asperger’s Syndrome - Does a Gluten-Free Diet Benefit?
2007-07-25 09:57:00 Tip! Other men and women snag onto a fad diet but do not exercise. A gluten-free, casein free diet is recommended for Asperger’s Syndrome children and adults. Often parents feel rather overwhelmed with such a restrictive diet, and only opt to embrace it as a last resort. The results produced by the diet varies markedly - but the keyword here is RESULT. You can expect some result. Children with autistic spectrum disorders usually have gastointestinal problems as well, such as reflux, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting and hiccups. It is know that the proteins found in wheat, rye, oats, barley and dairy products (gluten and casein) aren’t completely broken down in children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. These undigested proteins can leak into the bloodstream, potentially interfering with neurological processes by having an opiate-like effect upon their systems. The All You Can Eat Love Diet. After diet and exercise, what else is there. Discover the hidden secret to long...

Cho Seung-Hui's Asperger Syndrome
2007-04-24 05:00:00 The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here.I am going to make a modest attempt at a psychological evaluation of Cho Seung-Hui in this post - keep in mind I am just self-educated about these matters - I do not have a degree in the field, and I have never done any clinical work.Previously, I suggested that Cho Seung-Hui was experiencing the prodromal symptoms of schizophrenia. You can go back to that post and see my reasons for saying that. The main reason I felt that was because I did not feel that he had schizophrenia itself - I never saw any evidence of hallucinations or delusions. It's not a delusion to think that the world is hostile and people don't like you, to blame a hostile world for your misery, and want to get even by killing some of those hostile folks. It's not rational thinking either, but there is no delusion.Did some of these hostile people steal his stuff, come into his room at night and rearrange things, cause him to get ...
