Natural Painkillers - Avoid the Dangers of Aspirin & Ibuprofen
2008-05-28 11:54:00
Nearly one-third of all gastrointestinal bleeding related hospitalizations and deaths are the result of using aspirin, ibuprofen, or other NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), according to an August 2005 report in The American Journal of Gastroenterology. But you may think, oh well I'm only on low dose aspirin, or baby aspirin, and my doctor told me to take it for heart attack prevention. However, up to one-third of these GI bleeding deaths were due to low dose aspirin. In real-life numbers, this means that out of every 100,000 people that use aspirin, ibuprofen and other NSAIDS, 15 will die from it.If these odds look okay to you, then carry on. But if they seem rather high, and out of proportion to the reason you're using painkillers, then you may want to look at some natural alternatives. If you find yourself in need of a painkiller, you should investigate both acupuncture and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), if you want long-term results. Taking a pill or supplement ...

Why is aspirin so dangerous to cats?
2008-02-20 04:16:00
by: Julia - Cat WorldAspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is one of the most well known and popular over the counter drugs available. It is easy to assume that it is safe for cats, but this is definitely not the case.Unlike humans, cats do not metabolise aspirin very slowly. It is extremely easy to give a cat a fatal overdose in as little as a single tablet. The biological half-life of aspirin is 37.5 hours in cats, meaning that it takes 3 days to remove half of the drug from the body. Aspirin toxcity occurs when a guardian intentionally gives the cat a high dosage of aspirin, gives aspirin over a prolonged period, or accidentally gives a product containing aspirin.Aspirin toxicity can lead to kidney and liver damage.Symptoms of aspirin poisoning?DepressionHyperexcita-bilityLoss of balanceVomiting, may contain bloodDiarrheaAnorexiaAnemiaGast-ric ulcersLiver necrosisHyperthermia* If you cat has symptom above, your cat can seizures, coma or death. So you must take your cat to vet immediately.Tec...

The Shocking Truth about Aspirin ? It Doesn?t Work!
2008-02-06 07:26:00
Aspirin has been around for over half a century. It's primary and "original" use was for pain relief. But when Tylenol and NSAIDs (such as Advil) took over the pain relief field, the aspirin industry "bigwigs" pulled out the "big guns" and went after: heart disease. What the heck, they figured. After all, a billion-dollar medicine has to go somewhere. And like most businesses, you have to keep growing and finding new "revenue streams" to increase revenue and profits. T he "big killer" of heart disease seemed like a natural avenue to go down. So aspirin decided to acquire "new indications" as a blood-clot fighter and is already widely used to treat and prevent strokes and heart attacks. It Didn't Work For ApplesJust about every male I know over the age of 60 (including younger men) and many women (BOTH my parents in fact) are taking "an aspirin a day to keep the doctor away." Well, it didn't work for apples and I don't think it works for aspirin either. Bu...

HIGH HEART ATTACK, STROKE RISK IN ASPIRIN-RESISTANT PATIENTS
2008-01-19 17:03:00
Study quantifies risk of being sensitive to aspirinBeing resistant to aspirin makes patients four times more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke or even die from a pre-existing heart condition, according to a study published on bmj.com, the Web site of the British Medical Journal. The study relates to patients who are prescribed aspirin long-term as a way of preventing clots from forming in the blood.Patients who are labeled “aspirin resistant” have blood cells (platelets) that are not affected in the same way as those of patients who are responsive to the drug, i.e. people who are “aspirin sensitive.”There is currently no agreed method of accurately determining who is and isn’t aspirin resistant and the reasons why someone might be aspirin resistant are currently a cause of controversy.Relatively few studies have looked at whether aspirin resistance has any impact on clinical outcome so the Canadian authors carried out a review of all the available data to better under...
Efek aspirin pada anak
2008-01-19 11:07:00

Aspirin Absorption
2007-11-23 22:07:00
This simple animation illustrates how an acidic molecule like aspirin can change its polarity depending on the environment. Aspirin, which is non-ionized in the strongly acidic stomach environment (pH ~2), can be readily absorbed across the membrane. Once in the bloodstream (pH 7.4), however, the aspirin molecule is deprotonated to become ionic, polar, and thus water soluble and more able to travel to target sites. The deprotonation is indicated by the removal of a hydrogen atom (white sphere) when the aspirin molecule is taken into the bloodstream.

ASPIRIN MAY REDUCE PARKINSON’S RISK
2007-11-07 02:38:00
Study finds NSAIDS may have a protective effectLike Cox-2 inhibitors, over-the-counter pain medications known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have become suspects in increasing risks of heart attacks and strokes. But researchers now think NSAIDs may have a beneficial effect too, reducing a person’s risk of Parkinson’s disease. The findings are in a study published in the November 6, 2007, issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.“Given our results and the growing burden of Parkinson’s disease as people age, there’s a pressing need for further studies explaining why these drugs may play a protective role,” said study author Angelika D. Wahner, PhD, with the UCLA School of Public Health in Los Angeles.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/-news04/2007/11/nsaids_parkinson-s.html~Sandy G.

Warfarin Better Than Aspirin at Stroke Prevention in Elderly People With At
2007-08-21 19:50:00
Warfarin is more effective than aspirin in prevention of stroke in people with a certain type of irregular heartbeat who are aged 75 or over, conclude authors of an Article published in this week's edition of The Lancet.Dr. Jonathan Mant, University of Birmingham, UK, and colleagues did a study (the Birmingham Atrial Fibrillation Treatment of the Aged Study/BAFTA) to determine how warfarin and aspirin affected stroke risk, and whether use of these drugs outweighed the increased risk of bleeding in elderly patients. They studied 973 patients aged 75 years or over (average 81 years), all of whom had atrial fibrillation, a particular type of irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). Of these patients, 488 were randomised to receive warfarin and 485 to receive aspirin, and were followed up for an average of 2·7 years. The incidence of fatal or disabling stroke (either ischaemic or haemorrhagic), intracranial haemorrhage, and clinically significant arterial embolism were studied in each group....

Quick Facts About Aspirin

Homemade Aspirin Mask
2007-05-15 16:28:00
Hey dolls, hope you are diligent about sloughing off the dead skin cells on your face regularly and getting it all smooth and glowy for the summer! You know I'm a big fan of exfoliation, I like to keep my pores clean and unclogged. Especially now it's hot, the oil glands are working overtime. We sweat more and we wear sunscreen all the time (some can really clog the pores). A friend of mine recently passed me a great homemade exfoliation recipe. Let me just say -- it works wonders!! I will actually say it is more effective than a lot of Beta Hydroxy products on the market. You must try this, especially if you want to get rid of some blemishes and those over-the-counter anti-acne creams haven't worked for you. 1. Get 6-10 plain uncoated aspirins. No need to get expensive ones. The cheap no name brand at Walmart works just as well. Dissolve them in hot water, just a few drops. Mash them with a spoon. 2. Add a half teaspoon of the following to give it better body and st...
ACE inhibitors + Aspirin and NSAIDs
2007-05-14 16:08:00
The interaction between indomethacin and ACE inhibitors is well established, with a number of studies showing that indomethacin can reduce the antihypertensive effect of captopril, enalapril, and lisinopril, and single studies showing it can reduce the antihypertensive effect of cilazapril and perindopril. Note that the interaction may not occur in all patients. If indomethacin is clearly required in a patient on any ACE inhibitor, it would be prudent to monitor blood pressure carefully. In comparative studies, indomethacin has been shown to have less effect on the calcium channel blockers amlodipine, felodipine, and nifedipine, than on enalapril. Therefore, a calcium channel blocker may be an alternative to an ACE inhibitor in a patient requiring indometacin. Low-dose aspirin (It may be prudent to increase blood pressure monitoring when any NSAID is added or discontinued in a patient on any ACE inhibitor. Intermittent use of NSAIDs should be considered as a possible cause of errati...

Long-Term Aspirin Use Associated with Reduced Risk of Dying in Women
2007-03-30 21:31:00
Women who take low to moderate doses of aspirin have a reduced risk of death from any cause, and especially heart disease–related deaths, according to a report in the March 26 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. Some studies have provided evidence that aspirin may reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of cancer, the two leading causes of death in U.S. women, according to background information in the article. However, it is unclear whether aspirin reduces the risk of death overall for women."Use of aspirin for one to five years was associated with significant reductions in cardiovascular mortality," the authors write. "In contrast, a significant reduction in risk of cancer deaths was not observed until after 10 years of aspirin use. The benefit associated with aspirin was confined to low and moderate doses and was significantly greater in older participants and those with more cardiac risk factors."There are several mechanisms by which aspirin could reduce the risk of...

Caution for Aspirin Users

Not to deviate much from the sports/orthopaedic focus of this blog, but I came across another article on the caution for patients taking Aspirin. We posted last week on the American Heart Association's new guidelines which encourages physicians to limit drug therapy for pain, especially NSAIDs. Today there was a new report that people at average risk for colon cancer should not take aspirin or ibuprofen and similar painkillers to try to prevent the disease because of the risk of developing bleeding and other problems. Just something else to think about regarding patient care in states with direct access to physical therapy services.Washington PostTuesday, March 6, 2007; Page A08Aspirin Taken as Cancer Preventative Has Risks Save This Page

Aspirin can save cancer patients experiencing heart attack
2007-01-22 16:07:03
The Hindu: Aspirin can prove to be a life saviour for cancer patients who have heart attacks, claims a new research. And, the medical decision to not give aspirin to cancer patients who have heart attacks (based on the premise it could cause lethal bleeding) is a deadly mistake, it says. Researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, however, say that notion is now proven wrong and that without aspirin, the majority of these patients will die. They say that their study, turns common medical assumptions upside down and will likely change medical practice for cancer patients. Because aspirin can thin blood and cancer patients experience low platelet counts and abnormal clotting, physicians view aspirin as a relative contra-indication. Given that blood platelets are responsible for the clotting process, physicians do not eagerly prescribe aspirin as a standard treatment. The study to be published in the February 1, 2007 issue of the journal Cancer, found that 9 of...
