2008-04-23 16:10:00 Catching the train from Florence to Assisi gives the gift of 3 or so hours to see the wondrous Italian countryside. Houses litter the countryside, in various states of evolution from the youth of construction, the middle-ages of ...

Saint Francis of Assisi meets Shams Tabriz
2008-01-14 22:34:00 What is common between Saint Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) and Jelaluddin Rumi (1207-1273)? Both are ecstatic mystic of divine love and the common source might very well be Shams of Tabriz's inner illumination, who is more known as the guide of Rumi. What is less known is the accounts that St Francis was in contact with Rumi?s mentor at some important point in his life in Damascus.Saint Francis of Assisi, perhaps the most beloved saint of the Western world, founded the Franciscan Order, and is known for his embrace of poverty (faqara, a very central attitude of the suifs), his commitment to creation, and to nonviolence. On the other hand Rumi is the most beloved poet of love not only in East but also in West. Francis and Rumi both are most celebrated mystics of love. Rumi and St Francis, the great names in Abrahamic mysticism, are thus given a point of contrast which reflects their spiritual unity. Oh to Be like Francis of Assisi
2007-12-20 03:46:00 Connie sent me this great quote by G.K. Chesterton about Francis of Assisi. It says: “it is utterly useless to study a great thing like the Franciscan movement while remaining in the modern mood that murmurs against gloomy asceticism. The whole point about St. Francis of Assisi is that he certainly was ascetical and ...

Assisi
2007-11-28 05:05:00 Another of our day trips while living in Italy was to Assisi, which is also located in the Umbria region. Assisi is the birth place of St. Francis. We went to Assisi on a tour bus instead of driving there ourselves. We discovered on this trip that we preferred to travel with our own car. Tours are nice, you get to sleep instead of drive and you get a guided tour. Jeff and Mandy do not like the guided tours, too much talking, and I don't like to ride on buses so much. We arrived in Assisi on a very cold, rainy day with extremely cold and strong winds. The town of Assisi is full of hills, so imagine us walking up steep hills in the rain with 100 mile per hour wind blowing toward us. This is how I remember Assisi. Whenever we got to a location of interest and took shelter inside. We got to see the church that St. Francis attended as a child. We got to sit in the pew and look at the cross he was looking at when God spoke to him.My favorite part of the day was at the church bu...
The Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
2007-10-11 07:23:00 The Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi Late 12th - early 13th century ascetic (i.e. renouncing worldly pleasures) monk who founded a group known as the “Franciscans” who are devoted to seving God and fellow human souls. This is a prayer that he wrote: LORD, Make me an instrument of Thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow LOVE Where there is injury, PARDON Where there is doubt, FAITH Where there is despair, HOPE Where there is darkness, LIGHT And where there is sadness, JOY O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to CONSOLE. O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek to be understood, but to UNDERSTAND.* O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek to be loved, as to LOVE.* For it is in GIVING, that we RECEIVE For it is in PARDONING, that we are PARDONED And it is in DYING **, that we are born into ETERNAL LIFE Amen. Just a note here: * means that I have added the stanza “O Divine Master...
