Some depressed patients opt for assisted suicide
2008-10-09 16:47:00
The results of a survey in Oregon suggest that the Death with Dignity Act enacted in the state in 1997 does not always prevent patients with depression, a treatable condition, from receiving a prescription for a lethal drug. The findings indicate that ?most people in Oregon who request physician aid in dying do not have clinical depression,? but yet there are ?small number of patients with clinical depression who are able to access lethal medications,? lead investigator Dr. Linda Ganzini, from Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, told Reuters Health. ?The Oregon law,? she explained, ?requires that if the prescribing physician is concerned that the patient might have depression influencing their judgment, that they be evaluated by a psychiatrist or psychologist. The proportion of requesting patients who are evaluated by a mental health professional has been dropping over the last decade and last year no mental health assessments occurred among the 46 people who died by physi...

Assisted suicide 'Dr. Death' to run for US Congress
2008-03-13 00:29:00
Assisted-suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian, whose controversial tactics earned him the nickname Doctor Death, plans to run for the US Congress. "We need some honesty and sincerity instead of corrupt government in Washington," Kevorkian said when announcing his bid to his hometown newspaper in Michigan, the Oakland Press, in an article published Wednesday. Kevorkian, who spent more than eight years in jail for the murder of a man whose videotaped assisted suicide was aired on national television, claims he actively helped 130 people die. I wish I were making that up, but it's true.  I just can't wait for someone to mention that they can't come into work in Congress and have good old Jack show up on their front door step with some kind of contraption. :)   Travis travis@rightwinglunatic.com
Assisted-Suicide Advocate Dr. Jack Kevorkian Running for US Congress
2008-03-12 18:35:00
I was very upset when I heard that this compassionate individual was sentenced to eight years for second-degree murder in the assisted death of Mr. Thomas Youk, who was a man suffering with Lou Gehrig's disease, and I wholeheartedly agree with his statement, "We need some honesty and sincerity instead of corrupt government in Washington," which is why I hope Dr. Kevorkian AND Dennis Kucinich win their coveted US Congressional seats.READ ABOUT THIS HERE Practice non-violence in your lives. Assisted Suicide Back in the News
2007-06-05 18:15:00
It is obvious, and sad, that an individual American citizen’s life, health and welfare is no longer that citizen’s responsibility. Our government clearly has a responsibility to protect its citizens from harm that may be brought about by outside forces, e.g., terrorists, unsafe public transportation, unsafe buildings or structures, etc. but that responsibility, like many ...

Lois Snyder And Arthur Caplan - Assisted Suicide: Finding Co
2006-12-14 09:22:01
From The Oprah & Friends Radio Show with Dr. Mehmet Oz, 13 December 2006 Assisted Suicide: Finding Common Ground by Lois Snyder and Arthur Caplan There is no constitutional right to physician-assisted suicide says the US Supreme Court. Some states allow it, as Oregon has done, and others are considering legalization. Yet there has been very little guidance offered to date about its practice. This book fills that void. Its chapters, by a diverse group of experts–some for, some against–provide a framework for thinking about what assisted suicide, particularly physician-assisted suicide, is and how its legalized practice might be guided. Although the book does not take a position on the morality or wisdom of legalizing assisted suicide, it does try to find common ground on real world concerns in this important continuing debate.
