Fighting Asthma Through the Cold and Flu Season
2009-10-20 01:38:00
There's a lot of asthma out there and much of it is very poorly controlled.  And it doesn't have to be that way.  At this time of year it's especially important to understand how to keep your asthma under control and avoid serious illness. A large proportion of deaths from H1N1 have occurred in people who are asthmatic.  Any respiratory illness can cause an asthma flare. First some stats--asthma affects:Over 22 million peopleOver 6 million childrenIn 2006  3,613 people died from asthmaChicago and New York City share the dubious distinction of having the highest asthma death rates in the country. While much extraordinary work has been done by the Chicago Asthma Consortium (funded by the Otho S.A. Sprague Foundation),...
What are some natural cures for coughing due to asthma?
2009-09-20 00:03:00
my mother has been coughing real bad lately and it seems that its because of asthma and i was wondering if there were any natural cures out there to control the cough… thank you YES, HAVE HER TAKE A TEASPOON OF HONEY WHEN SHE GETS UP IN THE MORNING. IF YOU HAVE ANY PETS CONSIDERING REMOVING THEM FROM THE HOUSE. CATS AND DOGS (BLESS THEIR LITTLE SOULS , I LOVE THEM BUT…) SHED AND THAT CAN RAISE CANE WITH ASTHMA. GET AND IONIC BREEZE FILTER AND PUT IT BESIDE HER TO FILTER THE AIR. TWO OR THREE IF NECESSARY. KEEP DOWN THE DUST IN YOUR HOUSE. SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS A PROBLEM IS THE CARPET. SOME CARPET HAS FORMALDEHYDE IN IT AND BOY CAN IT KICK UP A REALPROBLEM. THERE ARE PERFUMES THAT CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS TOO IN SHAMPOOS, SOAP, SOFTENERS IN THE DRYER, …SMOKING, DEODERANT. IF YOU HAVE TO GO TO MEDS THE ADVAIR , ONE PUFF AT NIGHT WILL HELP TREMENDOUSLY. SOMETIMES ONE PUFF IN THE MORNING BUT IT REALLY HELPS. I HAD A PHARMACIST TELL ME THIS AND IT WAS TRUE FOR OUR FAM...
Asthma and marathon training updates

It’s generally been a rough couple of months on the asthma front. This disease has been kicking my butt. Seems like Ive been sick more often than not. A couple weeks ago I started flaring again pretty severely, and as a result, had to up my prednisone to 50mg for a few days. The prednisone did it’s job this time and kept me out of the hospital, but weaning back down was really tough. I always have a difficult time tapering down below 25mg…. my peak flows bottom out and my symptoms come back with a vengeance. I probably wean too fast, but I know my body, and I would rather risk rebounding and breath crumby for a few days, then to stay on the higher doses and suffer the side effect of the prednisone itself. A few weeks back I had a sleep study and echo-cardiogram done to see if they might shed some light on why I’ve been having such a difficult time with my breathing at night. I’m short of breath pretty much 24/7, but more recently , especially in ...
Learned something new about my asthma
2009-08-12 16:58:00
Just when I thought I knew everything there was to know about asthma and COPD in general, a couple of my lung docs kindly corrected me on a few misconceptions I had regarding my own lung disease. Misconception #1 : I always thought that because I have a chronic problem with air trapping and the breathing discomfort that accompanies it, that I surely must have elements of COPD (emphysema) mixed in with my asthma. Not necessarily. There are several ways that air-trapping can occur. My Pulmonologists believe that my air-trapping is caused primarily by chronic and persistent inflammation of my smaller airways, rather than by structural changes that you would expect to see in a patient with COPD or Emphysema. While it’s true that I have chronic severe asthma and probably have some airway remodeling, my lung doctors believe that my lung disease is still most likely “pure asthma” and not COPD or emphysema which is caused primarily by cigarette smoking. A major res...

herbal cures wrote a new blog post: Treatments for Asthma, Diagnosis of Asthma How is asthma diagnosed? Asthma is a clinical diagnosis, which means the clinician knows that you have asthma by listening to the description of your symptoms (history) and by doing a thorough chest examination. Sometimes, additional tests may be required if the diagnosis is in doubt. A peak flow meter or a spirometry may be ...

Asthma TV News Spot
2009-07-01 05:59:00
The video above is a local TV news spot that I did on Monday, May 18th, 2009 for the 5 o'clock newscast. This is a great opportunity I was given by the hospital. I think this figures out to be once every other month for me. Today's topic was asthma. It's been kind of frustrating for me, because on three other occasions, I was scheduled to be on, but for whatever reason, the segment was cancelled. So, that's why I really didn't mention things beforehand.Last weekend, as I have done on three other occasions, I went through my slides that I was going to present. I rehearsed the pace at I was going to speak (I tend to talk fast when I get nervous) and rehearsed the inflections (I did not want to sound monotone), and of course, I rehearsed the content of the slides.I thought that my almost 100 shows on live internet radio would prepare me for live TV. I was wrong. There were three cameras there and I got flustered as to which one I was supposed to talk in to - or was I supposed to t...
Silly asthma questions
2009-06-24 17:33:00
As asked by Physicians when I’m in the hospital and ranked in order of dislike. ( I’m sure my fellow lungers can relate) #1) What triggered your asthma attack this time? #2) Why does your asthma get so bad? #3) Do you think anxiety makes your asthma worse? #4) Do you know how to check your peak flows ? #5) What can we do to keep you out of the hospital? #6) Have you ever been intubated for your asthma? #7) Why did you wait so long to come in for treatment? And this is how I usually answer them. #1) I don’t know. #2) I have bad asthma. #3) Suffocating to death tends to make me a little anxious . #4) I know more about pulmonary functions then you can ever hope to know. #5) How about taking care of me when I’m NOT sick. #6) I hold the worlds record. #7) Because I hate answering stupid questions like these. Do you detect a little sarcasm?

$ 138,000.00 for one asthma asthma attack?
2009-06-20 16:45:00
I think this is a record….even for me. 138 grand for 6 days in the hospital? The bill itself, is enough to give you an asthma attack! It’s funny…just by reading the line by line hospital charges, I was able to come up with a chronological time line of the events that took place. I was able to figure out when they put me on the ventilator and when they took me off. There were also things charged for that I didn’t even know happened. An abdominal CT scan with contrast for example; I didn’t even remember having that done until I saw the charge for it…almost $5,000. Page 5 has some real whoppers, like $2200.00 just to set-up a ventilator or how about $100 per hour for Albuterol treatments! It just blows my mind. To view the entire itemized bill ( all 16 pages of it) Click here . I think you’ll be amazed at just how much each individual item costs at this hospital.

Sorry About Lack of Posts

Updated June 18:This is one of the worst times of year for me - early June. My allergies go nuts and I'm extremely tired all the time. Bottom line is I don't feel like doing much of anything. I sleep 9-15 hours a day and I need to take stimulants (asthma medication) and drink about five cups of coffee to even make a 100-mile round trip drive. If I don't do that, I will fall asleep on the road and crash my car.I'm getting allergy shots once a week now, and it's the only thing that helps with the fatigue. I also drink quite a bit of coffee every day and I need to take multiple hits off the stimulant asthma inhaler just to make through the evening without nodding off. This is a really bad time of year for the pollens, especially in the Sierra foothills, where I am at the moment house-sitting at my parents' house (I live 33 miles away in the Valley) for my 86-yr-old father (he can't be left alone) while my mother and sister are visiting my aunt in the Chicago suburbs. It's times o...

About children and exercise-induced asthma
2008-06-03 21:50:00
If your child has exercise-induced asthma, preventing flare-ups is a big concern. As with asthma triggered by other things, exercise-induced asthma occurs when the main air passages of the lungs, the bronchial tubes, become inflamed. The muscles of the bronchial walls tighten, and cells in the lungs produce extra mucus. This can cause signs and ...

Spare a thought for asthma suffers - today is World Asthma day
2008-05-01 10:47:00
So why are we writing about asthma on our blog?   Because asthma kills between 100 and 200 New Zealanders every year and because New Zealand has one of the highest prevalence rates of asthma in the world.   Around 15% of adults and 20% of children aged 6-14 have asthma. This equates to 1 in 6 New Zealanders – almost 700,000 people in total. That’s like all the people living in Wellington and Christchurch!!   And that’s precisely why most (if not all) life insurance companies want to know if you’re an asthma sufferer before offering you a life insurance policy. If you are, they’ll generally follow a line of further questioning or tests to try and predict if you are likely to die from asthma.    But insurers would also admit (if you could corner them over a beer) that identifying high-risk asthma suffers is a challenge. One of the key indicators is supposedly the number of previous life-threatening asthma attacks you’ve had. Yet in a US study of aroun...

Can Immune System Have an Impact on Asthma and Allergies?
2008-04-20 19:29:00
Every human being has a natural immune system. It is comprised of, among others, tears, skin, mucus, cough, stomach acid, white blood cells. These ingredients are continuously at work, to thwart harmful substances like antigens - harmful chemicals, bacteria, viruses - from creating diseases and conditions.Medical fraternity concedes that many diseases like psoriasis,asthma,allergies,arth-ritis have their root cause in an impaired or low immune system.Immune system can be improved through as series of measures like regular dose of mineral supplements, multi-vitamins, vitamin C in proper quantity and a diet plan which is heavy on vegetables and fruits and other protein rich food. A regular intake of omega-3 fatty acid rich foods and legumes and a strict no-no to alcohol, saturated fats will help a lot. It should be supported by:* Exercise* relaxation* rest* Positive frame of mindDo you suffer from a low immune system? Then you must protect yourself from radiation and too much of sun ligh...
Gene variant increases risk of asthma
2008-04-20 12:33:00
A tiny variation in a gene known as CHI3L1 increases susceptibility to asthma, bronchial hyperresponsiveness and decline in lung function, researchers report early online in the New England Journal of Medicine. (The printed version will appear in the April 17 issue). The gene variant causes increased blood levels of YKL-40, a biomarker for asthma. A slightly different version of the genetic variation lowers YKL-40 levels and protects against asthma. Although the original discovery came from a study of a genetically isolated population, the Hutterites of South Dakota, the researchers were able to confirm the same connections between the CHI3L1 variations, YKL-40 levels and asthma susceptibility in three genetically diverse Caucasian populations from Chicago; Madison, Wisconsin; and Freiberg, Germany. This gene, "may have important implications in the early identification of, susceptibility to, and prevention and treatment of asthma,? said Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D., director, the Nat...
Asthma Overview
2008-04-18 03:11:00
Asthma is a disease that affects the breathing passages of the lungs (bronchioles). Asthma is caused by chronic (ongoing, long-term) inflammation of these passages. This makes the breathing passages, or airways, of the person with asthma highly sensitive to various "triggers." * When the inflammation is "triggered" by any number of external and internal factors, the passages swell and fill with mucus. * Muscles within the breathing passages contract (bronchospasm), causing even further narrowing of the airways. * This narrowing makes it difficult for air to be breathed out (exhaled) from the lungs. * This resistance to exhaling leads to the typical symptoms of an asthma attack.Because asthma causes resistance, or obstruction, to exhaled air, it is called an obstructive lung disease. The medical term for such lung conditions is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. COPD is actually a group of diseases that includes not only asthma, but also chronic bronchitis an...
