Odds & Ends: Astros, Bradley, Rangers, Ramon
2009-09-23 14:34:00 A fresh batch of links for Wednesday afternoon... Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle highlights some of the positives and negatives of the ongoing Drayton McLane era in Houston. "This is his franchise," writes Justice, "and he's certainly no absentee owner. He's front and center for all the good and all the bad." According to David Roeder of the Chicago Sun-Times, the IRS may be planning to challenge the Tribune Co.'s sale of the Cubs. The Tribune is attempting to save about $300 million in capital gains taxes with the sale, but is also maintaining a 5 percent stake in the franchise. So it's really more of a partnership. Milton Bradley's mother, Charlena Rector, told the Sun-Times' Chris DeLuca Tuesday that her son is open to returning to the Cubs. Of course, GM Jim Hendry and Co. probably don't want him back. MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan lays out several facts regarding the sale of the Texas Rangers. For what it's worth, Major League Baseball is hoping the sale price will...

Odds & Ends: Astros, Indians, Werth
2009-09-22 15:06:00 More links for Tuesday... Today's chat starts in an hour. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Astros aren't likely to hire Jeff Bagwell as the club's next manager. Former MLB managers Jim Fregosi, Buck Showalter and Manny Acta could all be considered for the job. As MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince reports, the Indians continue to discuss manager Eric Wedge's performance. An announcement about the skipper's future with the Indians should come soon after the end of the season, if not earlier. If the Indians decide to fire Wedge, Boston pitching coach John Farrell would be the favorite to replace him, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Jayson Werth explains to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick how Philadelphia fans bring out the best in him. Werth's having a career year, with 34 homers and a .900 OPS.

Sinking Astros fire manager Cooper (AP)
2009-09-21 19:04:00 The Houston Astros, who failed to make any sort of serious run at the postseason this year, fired manager Cecil Cooper on Monday with 13 games left in the season. Third-base coach Dave Clark was named interim manager. The Astros were 70-79 headed into Monday's home against St. Louis. The 59-year-old Cooper was hired on ...

This Isn't Over Until I Say It Is -- Astros at Cubs Live Game Thread
2009-09-02 00:47:00 Over? Who says this is over? I am sick and tired of you sad sacks whining and complaining. Technically speaking, the Cubs are nowhere near mathematically eliminated? Do you realize how many freaking years that mathematical elimination has been a done deal by Labor Day? Now I am not saying that this is the beginning of a month-long winning streak that ends with the Cubs atop the NL Central. Nor am I saying that the Cubs will suddenly stop BLOWING &$#%@ LEADS IN THE 8TH AND 9TH INNINGS. What I am saying is that the facts are what they are. Statistical analysis and breakdown is too much work for me. Plus, I go from the gut, baby. Thus, below you will...

2009-07-28 23:50:00 Photo courtesy Chicago Tribune If we're going to do this thing, kids, let's get one thing straight: The first rule of a win-streak is you don't talk about the win streak! The second rule of a win-streak: no outside food. Tonight marks the triumphant return of one Ryan Dempster and his big toe, both of which suffered unfortunate injury in an ill-fated attempt to clear the dugout fence at Wrigley. Clearly, Ryan Dempster is no Ted Lilly, who, if you haven't heard, underwent knee surgery today. That and his bum shoulder should keep him on the DL until Mid-August. Do I buy this? No. I think Obama has called Ted in to resolve the healthcare crisis. It should take Ted about...

2009-07-28 00:45:00 Photo courtesy Chicago Tribune Tonight the FIRST PLACE CHICAGO CUBS take on the Houston Astros, who are only 2 games back of the FIRST PLACE CHICAGO CUBS and hot on the trail of the FIRST PLACE CHICAGO CUBS. It's been a long, hard slog to get to first place for the FIRST PLACE CHICAGO CUBS, who have endured injuries, suspensions, bat-shit crazy pitchers, stupid injuries, more suspensions, a bat-shit crazy right-fielder, still more injuries, some minor leaguers, and a bat shit crazy manager who insists he is not a dragon. 2009-05-15 19:37:00 Above is the current view out my bedroom window (okay, not really, but it's LIKE that). We've had nothing but wave after wave of thunderstorms here this morning, so I don't hold out much hope for the game. Then again, I didn't hold out much hope for Wednesday night's game, either. We shall see. If there IS a game, it will pit NL MVP candidate Randy Wells against alleged shoplifter* Brian Moehler. We should know what's going on with the game in the next hour. Stay tuned. 2009-05-07 01:13:00 So it's not my pitching they like? After three glorious days with our heads in the clouds, we've come crashing back down to earth; or, more to the point, to 4th place. I understand that yesterday was a get-away day and all that, but dude Lou, did you seriously have to just throw the game? There's no way he expected that lineup to win. And now we're back looking up at the Reds, which makes me CRAZY. Luckily for us, the regulars will be back in the lineup tonight. That's good news, right? To have the regulars back? Right? That group includes Derrek Lee, who is batting .108 (4-for-37) on the road; Milton Bradley, who is hitting .128 for the season; Aramis Ramirez, who is hitting .333 overall, but has been limited because of a left calf strain; and Geovany Soto, who is batting .167. Oh right. Those guys. Hrmm. I don't suppose there's a chance you'd consider sitting Lee in Houston, is there, Lou? "Derrek has gotten some big hits for us the last few ballgames," Piniella said. Uh,...

2009-04-09 00:00:00 I predict, PAIN! The entity known as Ted Lilly brings his unique brand of bad assedness to Houston tonight for the rubber game of the series. If I cared at all for the well being of the Astros hitters, I might shudder in fear for them. Since I do not, all I can say is good luck suckers! Ted is a singular talent. He steals bases: Ted doesn' steal bases. He takes them. He negotiates treaties: "You. You're good." And when absolutely needed, he brings the pain: Molina still has nightmares of a blue, red, and grey freight train. You can catch the game on CSN+, WGN Radio, and of course Gameday 'toons. So pray to whomever you pray to, that Ted contains the fury. The ensuing massacre would scar the little ones for life.

2009-04-07 23:31:00 LINE! If you would have told me two years ago that Ryan Dempster would wind up being our number 2 starter, I would have told you to kiss my grits. "How can Ryan Dempster be in our starting rotation?" I would have asked, incredulous at your gall. "Instead of giving up 3 runs, he'll give up 27!" Obviously, Ryan was thinking the same thing I was, because shortly after he was announced as a starter, he made some comment about how he wanted to be a starter because the team would have more time to make up for the runs he gives up. So that was scary. But after a solid 2008, wherein he tried to make up for jinxing the team with his STOOPID World Series prediction by managing to win 17 games and a post a sparkling 2.96 ERA, hardly anyone says "kiss my grits" about Dempster anymore. I even had to stop calling him "Dumpster," and that hurt. Because that was like, the best nickname we had for anyone. But such is the burden of having a winning team. Tonight Ryan makes his 2009 debut in Houston...

2009-04-06 20:58:00 (Looks around proudly at group of bedraggled LOHOers) We made it. We made it though the black days following our unfortunate exit from the post-season. The long, dark days of November and December, when it seemed like Opening Day was decades away the only thing we had to sustain us was the specter Jake Peavy being dangled in front of us, urging us ever onward. We made it through the longest ST in the history of the world, having to spend day after day suspended in a state of anxious dissatisfaction, watching the likes of Other Blanco and Somebody Scales, when we longed for, nay, YEARNED for Ramirez, Soto, and Lee. But we made it. It's all over. We can breathe again. For today, I tell you this: Tonight Big Z and his minions take on a shell of the former Houston Astros, who were last seen sobbing quietly in the corner after Z no-hit them in Miwaukee. Oh, and the Astros STILL want you to know that it wasn't fair for them to have to play a game during a hurricane, because they had a...

Post-pwnd Game Thread: Chicago Cubs @ Houston Astros, TBD
2008-09-12 18:00:00 So there was supposed to be a game today between the Jason-Marquis-led Chicago Cubs, and the Houston Astros. Unfortunately, the game has been postponed due to horrible weather- Hurricane Ike is expected to make landfall sometime tonight or Saturday morning. So I'm turning this into an off-base diary. In Hartford, Hereford, and Hampshire, Hurricanes Hardly ever Happen First Base A perhaps new-ish version of Will It Blend? Second Base This man deserves a high-five from all of us! Now, I don't want to say I'm personally biased in favor of Mike Fontenot because he and I are approximately the same height, because that would be a lie. I'm personally biased in favor of Mike Fontenot because I made a sign for him that I forgot to bring to the game, so I feel guilty. But Mike Fontenot deserves some recognition for how well he has played. He has a higher VORP than Kosuke Fukudome, even though he has less than half the plate appearances. He has a higher OPS than anyon...

2008-09-04 00:00:00 Jay Mariotti did not read this book. So, which would you like first? Let's start with the bad, followed by the good, on a number of topics. Bad: Still no complete word on Z's shoulder. He had an arm exam today, and will have an MRI tomorrow. What does that mean? Hell if I know. Dammit Jim, I'm not a doctor! Whatever the case, though, it's doubtful he's going to be pitching in the next few weeks. Good: Carlos Zambrano is but one man. Cubs still have a pretty stacked rotation, including tonight's starter, Ryan Dempster. Sean Marshall is expected to take over, and there are definitely worse candidates to have. Bad: The Cubs are mired in a four-game losing streak, and are having a worse time putting it together than John McCain when he found out Bristol Pallin is going the Ariel Moore route and rebelling Good: The Brewers lost again. Everybody know The Brewers for girls! Magic number down to 19, 18 if we decide beating the Astros and sorry-ass Randy Wolf would be a good idea for ...

2008-09-01 12:11:00 Cubs stink for second day in a row A 20-8 August isn't so bad, I suppose. From the Trib: "There's nothing wrong with the effort," a testy manager Lou Piniella said after Sunday's 5-3 loss. "Give the Phillies credit. We're not supposed to win every day. It's not that easy. "I think we spoiled people and we got people used to [winning]. But every day things don't go your way in this business. That's why you play 162 games, and that's why you play six months." But with their second straight home loss - for only the second time since the opening series - the Cubs had their nine-series winning streak broken. Cubs hitters left 19 men on base in the last two days. Their last 23 hits have been singles, going back to Friday's homer by Alfonso Soriano - and he left four runners on base in his final two at-bats Sunday. "We believe [our] team is very good," Soriano said. "We have to play better. We left a lot of runners in scoring position, so I have to start concentrating a little bit...

Game Thread; Astros at Cubs, 2:20 p.m. EDT/1:20 CT: Marquis is pitching? Cr
2008-08-06 18:28:00 I'm a people person!! The Cubs have won eight out of their last nine non-rain shortened games. The one loser has been, of course, Jason Marquis. Even though he gave a quality start, it was the max you could do. Marquis is now 0-4 in his last six starts, and hasn't recorded a win since mid-June. It's now August, if you're wondering. Now, I'm not saying Jason Marquis is a bad pitcher. Wait. Yes I am. He's bad. Smoke and mirrors. I truly believe the only reason Jason Marquis is on the roster is for luck purposes. Since Marquis has started his major league career, every team he's been on has made it to the postseason. Look it up. When you haven't won a World Series in a century, I guess you'll try anything. I mean, come on. Zambrano, Lilly, Harden, Dempster...and Marquis. He's like the fifth Beatle. Or the fifth Monkee. Or the fifth Door. Those guys rocked it out with four members. Maybe the Cubs should as well. This is no great quintet. The good news for the Cubs is ...

2008-08-05 19:30:00 Rain Rain go away, come again some other day. (Just not this weekend, I have beach plans) Gray skies are gonna clear up, put on a happy face Yesterday's loss was annoying in the way only a shortened game can be. But with a number of regular starters getting the day off it wasn't as painful as it could have been. Hopefully most will be back today, although there are rumors of Soto getting the day off. Up for the Astros today is Wandy Rodriguez. His ERA has been steadily increasing over the last 2 months, and last week he gave up 5 runs in just 4 and 2/3 to the Reds. No offense to his parents, but Wandy doesn't really strike me with fear. The Cubs are countering with my favorite smirking smile Rich Harden. After a few good outings with double digit strikeouts in each and no win to show for it Harden took a slightly different approach. With only 9 strikeouts, he pitched a little longer into the game, and bribed Jim Edmond...

2008-07-20 11:42:00 Little less of this today The wheels have completely fallen off this operation this weekend due to too many late nights on the part of the "editorial staff," so this morning you guys are getting really bad headlines. The only thing that really jumped out at me is that Kerry is unavailable for the rest of the Houston series because his owie still hurts. I don't even remember where I that, probably the Trib. If you find anything newsworthy, feel free to toss it up here. And then there's game today. Against the Astros. Who will probably beat us. Again. If you didn't notice, we're now only two game up on the surging Cards and Brewers. Blah. I'd like to think Dempster can turn things around today, but we're on the road, so that's probably a pipedream. And since Kosuke, Lee, Soto and Ramirez have all decided to stop hitting at the same time, our chances of scoring any runs is next to nothing. I'm just going to go watch Padraig for a while. Oh, go Cubs.
