Astrud Gilberto with Stanley Turrentine (1971)
2008-01-15 04:34:00 Astrud Gilberto with Stanley Turrentine (1971)European Import "Master Series" version, ASIN: B0000AM6REMP3 | 320Kbps | Cover Scans | RS.com | 105mbGenre: JazzOne "greatest hits" compilation, or even one track on a various-artists compilation, is about all the Astrud Gilberto the average music fan will ever want or need. Her famously breezy, lightweight boss nova, though the very essence of "cool", generally lacks the substance for album-tracks-and-all scrutiny. This is why Astrud Gilberto With Stanley Turrentine is such a nice surprise; an overlooked "fan favorite" that's worth discovering. Released in 1971, it came nearly a decade after Gilberto's "Girl From Ipanema" heyday. But several factors make this album truly unique. First, it's the only album Gilberto made for the CTI label, after a long relationship with Verve. Secondly, on several tracks she's paired with the great saxophonist and then-labelmate Stanley Turrentine (why not?!?). And finally, the album was produced and a...

Astrud Gilberto - September 17, 1969 (1969)
2007-06-03 03:09:00 Mr. E. was working hard in the background, just waiting for our celebration ending to pick another nice contribution to Loronixers. Mr. E. is addressing a request made by Alexandre Coimbra that took CBox users surprised with the information of a pretty unknown Astrud Gilberto album. Thanks Mr. E. for another nice collaboration, I had no hope to make this post; nobody had idea of this LP.This is Astrud Gilberto - September 17, 1969 (1969), for Verve. The last Astrud Gilberto release at Loronix Astrud Gilberto - I haven't got Anything Better to Do (1969) is perhaps one of her darkest album ever and this one - recorded in the same year - is just the opposite. September 17, 1969 is groovy and sometimes sounds like rock'n'roll albums from the early 60's. The repertoire is also different from any other Astrud Gilberto albums, including the legendary The Doors hit Light my Fire, Here, there and Everywhere from John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Begginers from Chicago, among others that yo...

Repost | Astrud Gilberto - I Haven't Got Anything Better to Do (1969)
2007-05-11 03:44:00 Loronix birthday is also time for some special and very requested reposts. I don't run statistics on reposts and I think this album is the second on number of requests, the first I don't need to say what it. It was released in January with a problem on track 01 - A Time for US with a very low quality. I was amazing to find this LP at Sao Paulo Vinyl fair for only R$ 10, less than five dollars, original 1969 Brazilian issue. Now Loronixers can enjoy the missing track and get the whole set on a better quality, a miracle that takes place only at Loronix 1st anniversary. I'm gathering the first post text and I hope you enjoy these special birthday reposts. This is Astrud Gilberto - I Haven't Got Anything Better to Do (1969), for Verve, a forgotten Astrud Gilberto work taking in consideration her whole discography. In the liner notes, Astrud says that it is her "fireplace album", something that I could not understand why hearing it. This is truly different Astrud Gilberto LP and very ...

Astrud Gilberto - Astrud Gilberto with Turrentine (1973)
2007-05-03 06:08:00 The first to mention and call my attention to this album was The Jazzman and I remember we could not make it at that time due commercial availability. Then Caetano sent it on his last package and for my surprise it has gone out of print again. In spite of being almost unknown to Brazilian mass audience, Astrud Gilberto is famous worldwide and one of the most wanted artists at Loronix. I'm saving a great Astrud surprise for Loronix 1st Anniversary Celebration. Stay tuned. This is Astrud Gilberto - Astrud Gilberto with Turrentine (1973), for Columbia, featuring the US sax player Stanley Turrentine. Very easy to describe and self-explanatory, Astrud Gilberto with Stanley Turrentine is a reunion of top-notch musicians lead by Eumir Deodato (piano, arrangements), such as: Sivuca, Dom Um Romao, Gene Bertoncini, Ron Carter, Toots Thielemans, among others. The repertoire mixes Brazilian and American songs and there are two instrumental tracks, To a Flame and Vera Cruz by Milton Nascimento a...

Astrud Gilberto and Walter Wanderley Trio - A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadn
2007-03-26 07:22:00 I don't know how popular is this album worldwide, but certainly it is one of the most, how can I say, identified with Bossa Nova, at least in the USA. A Certain Smile and A Certain Sadness was released in 1966, a time when Bossa Nova mania was on its peak. I have been browsing some statistics and Astrud Gilberto is one of the most popular artists at Loronix, Walter Wanderley also. This cover artwork has its charm, showing Astrud Gilberto surrounded by Walter Wanderley (left), Claudio Slon (right) and probably Bobby Rosengarden (center).I could not check, but Joao Gilberto guitar is possibly on this album, playing in all tunes. Caetano is providing this LP to Loronixers on CD quality, with tracks from the original 1966 issue. This is Astrud Gilberto and Walter Wanderley Trio - A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness (1966), for Verve, featuring the voice of Astrud Gilberto and Walter Wanderley trio, which is Walter Wanderley (organ, piano), Claudio Slon (drums), Jose Marino (bass) and Bob...

Antonio Carlos Jobim & Astrud Gilberto - Viva Brasil, Live (1988)
2007-02-27 18:15:02 Hello, Good Night! The daylight saving days are over in Brazil and it is something that changes Loronix business as usual, mainly for the friends out of Brazil. If you are from Europe, you will see the first post one hour late. Folks at the opposite direction of our zone, one hour earlier. The only friend that does not give a damn to this change is zecalouro, he is driven by mother nature. Happy parrot.Anyway, since you have already an introduction to this post looking at my homemade cover design, I will be straightforward, saving your time at this start of another day at Loronix. This is Antonio Carlos Jobim & Astrud Gilberto - Viva Brasil, Live at "Jazz aus Südamerika" ZDF Jazz Club, Germany (1988), and no Label. I took sometime with the help of tcisalpino to understand what we had, this is the audio of a live concert, extracted from the video, featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto and probably with the accompaniment of Banda Nova. We could not check if Banda Nova is perf...

Astrud Gilberto - Beach Samba (1967)
2006-12-13 21:59:01 Astrud Gilberto is Brazilian, for sure. Astrud Gilberto was the lady in the right place and with the right husband, sure. Julie London, with her Julie is Her Name, was also the right lady in the right place and time, but she never could go further.Astrud did. This album was arranged by Eumir Deodato and Luiz Bonfá and it is a mixture from A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness - tracks 13 to 17 and the original Beach Samba - tracks 1 to 12.It's national holiday in Brazil, zecalouro is feeling lazy today, Astrud is a best start for today, here.Hope uEnjoy!

Astrud Gilberto - A Certain Smile A Certain Sadness
2006-12-09 10:39:01 ‘A Certain Smile A Certain Sadness’ is possibly Astrud Gilberto’s finest album. Brazilian organist Wanderley had worked with Astrud and her husband Joao Gilberto as an accompanist and arranger for years, so his trio-including bassist Jose Marino and drummer Claudio Slon-has an intuitive feel for Astrud’s “desafinado” (deliberately off-pitch) vocal style. The trio’s playing meshes [...] |
