Mob Mentality at the Movies
2008-03-07 20:15:00 The nearly concurrent DVD releases of Alberto Lattuada's "Mafioso - Criterion Collection, and Marco Turco's "Excellent Cadavers," from First Run, make for a discerningly complementary treatment of the Sicilian Mafia as an indestructible force of evil. Americans have adopted mobsters as cultural house pets — as urban outlaws, dapper rogues, or House of Atreus incendiaries, depending on one's
Capitol to Release Sinatra at the Movies
2008-03-03 23:06:00 To mark the tenth anniversary of his death, both Reprise and now Capitol/EMI are going the re-release route with some of his best known recordings. Sinatra at the Movies is a 20-track compilation of some of Frank Sinatra's best known songs used within some of his best known films. It is due April 15.Even in dramatic films such as From Here to Eternity, Not as a Stranger and Johnny Concho, Sinatra managed to place a song over the opening credits or some other part of the movie. Of course, he is known for his musicals, which are represented here by Pal Joey and Can Can.In all, Sinatra was in 58 films, 21 of which were made during his time at Capitol. Also being released over the next two months are the album Sinatra: Nothing But the Best from Reprise, a number of DVD sets which include films never before available in that medium, and a commemorative stamp from the U.S. Postal Service. The torturous truth can be disturbing - even at the movies
2008-01-16 15:49:00 Sometimes, when you want to get away from it all, you head to the cinema and escape into a fantasy world. Two Divas - "At the Movies"
2007-11-10 04:37:00 Los Angeles: Kuh Ledesma and Pops Fernandez enthralled the crowd with hit songs from blockbuster movies that also were chart topper favorites. They were joined by the legendary balladeer Nonoy Zuniga and the amusing Fe de los Reyes, the classic Fil-Am singing comedienne. Kuh and Pops brought back a flood of memories with a repertoire that included songs from reel scenes we all knew then, which they brought to life for the Los Angeles audience at the concert entitled "Divas At The Movies" last October 13th, 2007.Photo by Joe Cobilla

Remember that $10 you spent at the movies? Well it tallies up to a $4 bill
2007-08-22 11:53:00 Hollywood is looking at a $4 billion dollar summer, thanks to an expected 600 million tickets being sold. No shit, check it out: “We will certainly surpass $4 billion and probably be around $4.1 billion. I also think we will be at 600 million tickets sold, which we haven’t seen in a few years,” said Paul Dergarabedian, head of ticket sales tracker Media By Numbers. So far, domestic ticket sales stand at around $3.83 billion, up some 10 percent from last year and 5 percent ahead of the pace for 2004’s record summer of $3.95 billion. Admissions are 559 million, up 5 percent from last year, according to Media By Numbers. This is a lesson to the music industry. I can download every new release movie the same day that it shows up in theatres with relative ease - as can anyone else with broadband in North America (just like music). On top of that, I can upload it to an iPod or other portable device and enjoy it (just like music). And on top of THAT, your $10 fo...

Da Da Da Da Da
2007-08-03 06:24:00 The Simpsons Movie. Spoilers ahead! It starts off as a fun ride, dips a bit in the middle, and then rises up (slightly) for the end. The movie starts with the family going to church, where then Grandpa Simpson gets a "prophecy", which Marge believes is to be about the impending doom of Springfield. Of course, the person who brings it about just has to be Homer. In short, after Springfield gets covered in a dome, the Simpsons get hunted down by the entired town, the family's escape to Alaska, the family's desertion of Homer after he selfishly refuses to save the town, Homer's encounter with the "boob lady", and (you knew it'll have to happen) his eventually saving of the town, regaining back his old life... As per usual, life lessons must be learned.Homer learns that he's lost without his family & the people of Springfield, Marge loses then regains her long suffering love for her husband (as always), Bart discovers that as much as he would love to have Flanders as his father, Hom...

Jaded at the Movies: Ratatouille
2007-07-08 07:53:00 So I read this comment that Samantha left for me on one of my movie blogs; "Matty, do you live at the movies or something? Is Texas really that boring?" The answer: Yes, Samantha, it is that boring. Also, I'm just a cheap date. I don't like nightclubs, I hate dance music, and I refuse to pay 20 bucks for a drink. My idea of a fun night out is a moderately priced meal, some conversation, and a good movie. I know its boring to alot of gay guys out there. But I'm not trying to get laid, so I don't really care. Anyways, to further prove my point, here is my review of "Ratatouille". I was actually a little hesitant to see this movie because I felt burned after watching that boring piece of shit, "The Incredibles", a couple of years ago. About the only good thing that I can say about THAT movie was that I got a really good 20 minute nap in the theater. But I figured I'd give "Ratatouille" a chance because I liked the previews and I LOVE Patton Oswalt, who plays the main rat, R...
Jaded at the Movies: Transformers
2007-07-04 23:33:00 Okay, so this morning, I rolled out of bed, put on some clothes, and went and saw Transformers. Now, I'm not going to give you a play by play of what it was all about, because I'm not a professional reviewer. But I will say that it was pretty damn AWESOME!!! This a pretty big compliment coming from me considering I usually treat anything from Michael Bay like kryptonite. If Armageddon and Pearl Harbor were any more shitty they would have left a skid mark on the fucking screen. But Transformers seems to be the anomily. Kind of like the full grown kid in a family of midgets. It was action packed, the special effects were ridiculously awesome, the writing was good without being over the top, and ,most importantly, Ben Affleck was nowhere in sight. In fact, the only real criticism I can really find for this movie was the rather blatant product placement throughout. According to this movie we live in a world where everyone drives GM and uses Nokia phones.Toyotas and Motorolas I can ...

At some point, I was even seriously considering walking out of the cinema. Let's just say it was too violent & gross for words. I Guess You Think You're at the Movies
2007-05-12 17:37:00 I've watched a whole bunch of movies lately. So why don't we discuss?"Beerfest" -- Ok, I should probably be a bit ashamed of watching this, but it was a funny diversion at least. Not much else to say, really, it's freaking "Beerfest" -- you want actual analysis?"American Hardcore" -- Good music, cool look back. A bunch of the old hardcore guys are really insufferable dorks, though. After the fifteenth 50-year-old guy telling you what a trailblazer he is, it gets kind of old."The Death of Mr. Lazarescu" -- Great performances, subtle humor, way too long. Movies about the mindlessness of bureaucracy shouldn't make you feel like you're in a Kafkaesque world yourself."Repo Man" -- One of my favorite movies from my teenage years, I haven't seen it in ages, and it had just been reduced to a bunch of one-liners bouncing around my mind. A friend recently warned that it wouldn't hold up. He was utterly wrong. One of the finest movies ever."What about our relationship??" "Fuck that."Pur...

It?s Official: America Only Wants Crap at the Movies
2007-04-07 22:03:00 Filed under: Action & Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, New Releases, Box Office, Fandom, Distribution, The Weinstein Co., Newsstand, Quentin Tarantino, Remakes and SequelsIt's looking like next week's big watercooler subject in Hollywood will be the surprising failure of Grindhouse at the box office. Tracked to bring in about $25 million in its opening weekend, the uber-hyped Tarantino and Rodriguez double feature will almost certainly limp into Monday with a much smaller take; it opened Friday with a paltry $5 million, a total that puts it squarely in fourth-place, behind Will Ferrell's skating movie Blades of Glory, Meet the Robinsons (whatever that is -- sorry, I just can't tell kids movies apart anymore) and the most recent Ice Cube crapfest, Are We Done Yet?, which had already been playing since Wednesday. In fact, it did only marginally better than The Reaping, which opened on Thursday and is so bad that it was called "unreleasable" by many. Let's leave aside ...

At the Movies
2006-10-29 14:06:00 A friend of mine recommended I get the movie Danny Deckchair. We watched it last night and I have to say that I highly recommend it. It is a very nice romantic comedy from Australia with enough silliness to make it not just a "Chick Flick." Here are some other less-known movies that I would recommend: Mystery Men - With Ben Stiller. Very funny (and odd) movie about some non-mainstream superheroes. What's up Tiger Lilly? - by Woody Allen. This was one of his very first movies. He takes a cheesy Japanese movie and dubs it with a plot in English that has nothing to do with the original script. The main character is named "Phil Moscowitz" - a common Japanese name, and they are after the famous egg salad sandwich recipe. The Frisco Kid - with Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford. This gem is about a polish Rabbi who has to cross the US during the wild west days to bring a Torah to the San Francisco Jews. He meets up with a rough cowboy (Harrison Ford - well before Star Wars) who fee...
