Journal Entry: Playoff Football at Lambeau
2008-01-13 07:03:00
Playoff football at Lambeau means more than football. Hope all enjoyed Favre and the Pack’s performance. 4:05 ? Much to my surprise the game started close to the announced time. I leisurely finished watching the UCLA / Washington St. game, stayed tune to find out the next matchup on FSN ? Cal / Oregon ...
Preseason game two impressions
2007-08-19 16:09:00
Everyone was concerned about how the first string offense was going to fare after the disappointing performance against Pittsburgh. That Steelers game is now a distant memory after Brett Favre led the offense to an inspiring display versus the Seahawks. The passing game and the running game were clicking, and they didn't have a turnover. It was an A- performance if not a solid A.Could Atari Bigby be the next starting strong safety for the Packers? His two sacks and forced fumble along with a quarterback hurry were the most impressive. But maybe even better was that he didn't give up any long pass plays like he did against Pittsburgh one week earlier. The sack attack continued in much the same way it did against Pittsburgh. A.J. Hawk's manhandling of the fullback picking up the blitz was inspiring. Not to be outdone were Cullen Jenkins, Abdul Hodge, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, Larry Birdine who also had sacks.Bubba Franks may have played the game of his life. It's too bad it had to come...
Rouse works his way up
2007-08-17 16:59:00
It appears as if the Green Bay Packers are going to give everyone a fair shot to win the starting strong safety job with the Packers. Earlier in the week, Atari Bigby got his chance, and now it's Aaron Rouse's turn."Rookie safety Aaron Rouse saw some time with the No. 1 defense for one of the first times all summer," reports Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel speaking of the Packers' Thursday training camp practice.Rouse had been further down the depth chart earlier during camp."Earlier in the week, coach Mike McCarthy indicated that Atari Bigby would get a chance with the starters Saturday night against Seattle," writes McGinn. "Bigby has been paired with Marviel Underwood. Rouse and Tyrone Culver generally have been the third pair, followed by Charlie Peprah and Alvin Nnabuife."A little competition never hurt anybody.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Bigby sits in with first string defense
2007-08-13 23:56:00
The Green Bay Packer coaches exhibited a short memory by placing Atari Bigby (pictured) in the starting lineup at safety during Monday's training camp practice."Atari Bigby lined up with the No. 1 defense in place of Marquand Manuel during a team drill," reports PackersNews.com. "It was the first time anyone other than Manuel lined up in the spot."Bigby played poorly on Saturday's preseason game giving up some long gains behind him while failing to tackle a receiver on a play that went for a touchdown.Manuel did very little to be unseated. He only played three snaps on defense during the game. It's very early on in the preseason, and Bigby certainly receives the benefit of the doubt. Packer Nation will be forgiving right now but no so amiable in a month or so. Photo credit: meanmachines.seWelcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Post-game impressions
2007-08-13 16:13:00
Here are a handful of impressions from Saturday's first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers:Among the biggest criticisms from the game is that the first team offense basically stalled. It was only the first preseason game and not a lot of critque should be based upon three series, but there is cause for minor concern. Why didn't Brett Favre throw the ball downfield? Not a single pass from Favre was longer than five yards. The blitzing Pittsburgh defense certainly didn't allow Favre to sit back and scan the field for very long, but the blocking did a pretty good job of picking up the blitz on all but a play or two. On a blitz, there has to be a breakdown in coverage somewhere. And the Packers need to exploit that in the future.Aaron Rodgers looked good. He completed his passes for a high percentage, and he kept drives going. His twenty yard scramble was clutch. It's only one game, but hopefully there's plenty more where that came from.Rookie runnning back Brandon Jacks...
Harris compares Bigby to Dawkins
2007-08-11 15:33:00
Green Bay Packers safety hasn't even played a full season in the NFL, but Al Harris is comparing him to Brian Dawkins.John Czarnecki of Fox Sports writes, "Harris made a bold statement to me. Harris said second-year safety Atari Bigby reminds him of Brian Dawkins, the Eagles? All-Pro. Harris thinks Bigby, who is working on the second team right now, can be that good."Packer fans will be eager to agree with Harris. The only thing is, right now Marquand Manuel is holding onto the starting strong safety job. The same Manuel that was one of the worst safeties in the NFL last year.So if Bigby can be as good as Dawkins, what's taking so long for the coaches to put Bigby in the starting lineup?Welcome to the Railbird feed. Manuel grabs starting job
2007-08-08 16:04:00
Packer fans everywhere might groan at another season of Marquand Manuel starting at strong safety, but they may have no other choice."It's halfway through the second week of training camp, none of the young safeties has mounted a serious challenge and Manuel looks entrenched as the No. 1 strong safety, the position that he played so poorly a year ago," writes Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. There aren't many options at the moment. Marviel Underwood is still recovering from a season-ending knee injury, Aaron Rouse is prone to rookie mistakes, Atari Bigby is still a work in progress, and Tyrone Culver and company are still inexperienced.Underwood appears as if he's coming back nicely from injury, though. Today's Green Bay Press-Gazette has a feature article on Underwood and his progress."He's just trying to prove he belongs on an NFL roster," writes Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Perhaps it's to be expected, but he's off to a slow start this year. He...
Ferguson surprises
2007-07-29 16:06:00
Green Bay Packers fans probably weren't expecting much from wide receiver Robert Ferguson who sat a majority of last season out with an injury. There's even a subsection of fans who probably don't want to see Ferguson succeed. Pretty much a career underachiever, Ferguson could be taking the roster spot of younger players with potential. But Ferguson got off to a good start at the team's first training camp practice on Saturday."Ferguson, who missed 12 games last season because of a mid-foot sprain, beat Patrick Dendy down the right sideline for a long completion from Brett Favre, then galloped into the end zone," reports Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette."Ferguson, a disappointment since signing a five-year, $13 million deal before the 2004 season, also made a nifty catch on a pass from Ingle Martin, and he bounced up quickly after safety Atari Bigby accidentally knocked him to the ground after a completion over the middle," continues Pelissero.Packer fans can only hope...
