Atheist Nexus Controversy?
2008-08-03 10:00:00
I recently read a few blog posts regarding Atheist Nexus, a social site on the Ning platform for atheists. Apparently, not everybody agrees with some of the decisions made by the operators of this group.  Sound familiar?  It's nice to know that  some people have their noses up everybody's asses and not just ours...but I digress. We set up a group there months ago which hasn't been utilized since the main site serves a similar function, but if you are into that format, please feel free to register at rationalresponders.ning.com. If there proves to be enough interest, we would be willing to spend the money necessary to improve the format over there. If you have already registered at Atheist Nexus, you can use the same login info.,Kelly
An Atheist and a Bear
2008-06-09 02:20:00
An atheist was taking a walk through the woods, admiring all that evolution had created. "What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!", he said to himself. As he was walking along the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. When he turned to see what the cause was, he saw a 7-foot grizzly charging right towards him. He ran as fast as he could. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing, He ran even faster, crying in fear. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. His heart was pounding and he tried to run even faster. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up, but saw the bear right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him. At that moment, the Atheist cried out "Oh my God!...." Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. Even the river stopped moving. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky, "You ...

VJack from Atheist Revolution has given some terrible advice about witnessing to atheists.  He says not to do it.  I advocate ignoring that advice completely.  VJack says: I know your church says you are supposed to do this and that you’ll win friends and magic Jesus points for your efforts. The Atheist and the Bear - Jokes of the week...
2008-06-01 09:06:00
The Atheist and the Bear An atheist was taking a walk through the woods, admiring all that the "accident of evolution" had created. "What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!", he said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing. He ran even faster, so scared that tears were coming to his eyes. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. His heart was pumping frantically and he tried to run even faster. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw the bear right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him. Atheist No More: Antony Flew
2008-05-29 02:10:00
Antony Flew has been one of the world’s most influential atheists. Recently, he published a book explaining how and why he has changed his mind. He now acknowledges God. For a great review of his book, and explanation of the arguments that eventually conquered Flew’s resistance to theism, check out this superbly written piece ...

Hi. My name’s Emily and I’m 14. I’ve been athiest for about a year. I haven’t told my parents, and I still go to church with them. I don’t have the heart to tell them. Anyway, I’ve found one other atheist, my best friend. All of my other friends are very religious. I’m afraid to ...

What's Wrong Being An Atheist?
2008-04-29 19:06:00
So what are you? A Buddhist, a Christian, a Catholic, a Muslim or someone that ?belongs? to another religion? Or are you an Atheist? What made you become the person you are today, atheist or otherwise? Will you be willing to defend your beliefs through the rest of this post? I?ve been having lengthy arguments with one of my good Muslim friends about this whole idea of the existence of god. But this post is not about that. The argument on the existence of god is something which I would happily deviate from for I have no divine knowledge to be able to answer that. But as many would say, ?It?s a matter of belief?, and I?d like to stick with it. So the matter at hand is: What?s wrong being an atheist? My parents are Buddhists. (I don?t know how to define a Buddhist, but if the definition dictates that a Buddhist is someone who follows the teachings of Lord Buddha, then yes, they are Buddhists). So does that make me a Buddhist? To a certain extent, yes, I guess. I?ve bee...

101 Atheist Quotes

From The Atheist Blogger. I knew less than half of them, and there are many gems in there. Some of my favorites: If I were not an atheist, I would believe in a God who would choose to save people on the basis of the totality of their lives and not the pattern of their words. I ...
Where are the atheist leaders?
2008-04-13 22:52:00
If it weren’t for a blogger over on the Chicago Tribune it’s highly likely that many of us would have never heard of Monique Davis’ anti-atheist tirade. Since that time only one non-theist organization appears to have said anything and that was the Council for Secular Humanism which issued a press release calling for ...

?Bad Day? the cause of anti-atheist rant
2008-04-10 19:45:00
Monique Davis has apologized citing that she was upset and was, according to another Illinois representative, having a “bad day”. Well, I’m having a bad day myself. I’m catching a cold or something and I’m pretty sure I’ve managed to break one of my toes. My five year old is home sick and is doing ...

My favorite atheist
2008-04-10 06:46:00
Click on the title for a BBC interview. Of course the interviewer sounds like a dhimmi accusing her of being provocative when she merely speaks the truth about the reality of "The religion of peace". One is reminded, when he says that she is as provocative as an Islamist in the eyes of Muslims, of the movie quote, "Truth? You can't take the truth". I must read her book when it comes out. No doubt her publisher is due to be threatened.
Monique Davis deemed "worst person" for anti-atheist tirade
2008-04-10 01:28:00
Keith Olbermann’s worst person last night was none other than Rep. Monique Davis of Illinois for her anti-atheist tirade in which she stated that it was “dangerous for children” to even know of the existence of atheism and ended with ordering the target of her tirade, an atheist, out of the witness chair he was ...

Atheist father sues Catholic mother

Here’s something to chew on. An atheist man has sued his Catholic ex-wife. At issue is the school their 14 year old son will attend. Mom and the son have chosen a Catholic school, but Dad wants him to attend a public school: As a practicing Catholic whose eighth-grade son, Michael, has always ...

Representative tries to put the fear of God in atheist
2008-04-06 18:31:00
Did you hear about the state legislator who last week blasted a Lutheran minister during a committee hearing for spewing dangerous religious superstitions, and then attempted to order the minister out of the witness chair on the grounds that his Christian beliefs are "destroying what this state was built upon?"Of course you didn't, because it didn't happen and would never happen. Not to a Christian, not to a Jew, not to a Muslim or to anyone who subscribes to any faith.Such an attack would rightly be considered scandalously out of bounds in contemporary society. But you probably also didn't hear about what actually did happen:Rep. Monique Davis (D-Chicago) interrupted atheist activist Rob Sherman during his testimony Wednesday afternoon before the House State Government Administration Committee in Springfield and told him, "What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous . . . it's dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists!"This is the Land of Li...

Atheist on Death
2008-04-05 20:34:00
Brian J. Sabel from Just Atheists wrote a post that caught my attention.  Since my grandma died, I’ve been thinking about death quite a bit for obvious reasons.  Obviously, my view of death is that we who place faith in Christ go on to eternal reward, while the rest do not.  “[I]t is appointed for ...
The Atheist Delusion
2008-04-02 06:09:00
The notion that religion is a primitive version of science was popularised in the late 19th century in JG Frazer’s survey of the myths of primitive peoples, The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion. For Frazer, religion and magical thinking were closely linked. Rooted in fear and ignorance, they were vestiges of human ...

The (ir)Rational Atheist--More Vox Day
2008-03-30 09:07:00
Starting off chapter two, which is entitled “Defining Science,” is a brief description of the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow, unknown to most, but a troupe of traveling masochists (or so it seems) who represent his caricature of science. These little side stories can have more of an effect than the reader understands, though. Right off the bat, science is seen as either freakish or trivial due to the association with that particular experience of his. Because of this, I find it necessary to give you the actual definition of “science”:  1. a branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and showing the operation of general laws 2. systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation… 4. systematized knowledge in general. 5. knowledge, as of facts or principles; knowledge gained by systematic study. 6. a particular branch of knowledge. 7. skill, es...
Am I the only atheist blogger blogging about the Cult of Scientology?
2008-03-19 04:24:00
In my experience on the atheosphere, bloggers have been pretty quick to stand against injustices done in the name of religion. Well right now we have an international cult masquerading as a religion* in order to get tax-exempt status, escape numerous external investigations, and now to be able to label those who oppose them as ...
The Four Hoursemen of the ATHEIST Apocalypse!
2008-03-17 11:34:00
I just loved this comic. I especially appreciate the contrast, when the very familiar-looking horsemen speak, with extremely scary looks on their faces, and horror movie poster-like letters, of an “apocalypse” I’d love to see become reality. “FACTS WILL STRADDLE THE EARTH AS A COLOSSUS, AND YOU SHALL LIVE IN THEIR SHADOW!!” (Seen first on Measured ...
A challenge to the right wing and the atheist

The atheist delusion
2008-03-16 02:49:00
The way things are going, they're going to crucify me.John Lennon. Secular thinkers reject the idea of providence, but they continue to think humankind is moving towards a universal goal - a civilisation based on science that will eventually encompass the entire species..

Atheist Identity
2008-02-14 13:00:00
A recent post at the Bad Idea Blog titled "What’s Best for Atheism Isn’t What’s Best" and featured at the last Carnival of the Godless really got me thinking. Is atheism the inevitable outcome of the application of reason? If so, what good is an atheist movement? Might such a movement actually distract from more important priorities (e.g., critical thinking, reason, science, etc.) and contribute to confusion?According to "Bad,"What I care about is rationalism. Skepticism. Science. And while these values do, in fact, feed into why I don’t share the beliefs of theists, they aren’t necessary for me to be an atheist (I could imagine not believing even without them). Nor do I think that sharing similar values would make it necessary for someone else to become an atheist. But I care about these values, and there’s a big ole’ period at the end of that sentence. From this standpoint, atheism can be viewed as an incidental outcome. If one applies reason, skepticism, science, and...
Crazed Christian Assaults Atheist in Coffee Shop
2008-02-13 12:38:00
Kristine at Amused Muse has a disturbing post in which she describes a scary encounter with a crazed Christian. Fortunately, this particular assault was of the verbal variety, but Kristine's tears tell me that it had quite an impact. Her description of the incident reminds us all that this sort of thing happens more than many of us would like to admit.Kristine's post begins with the following:I can't imagine a mentality more degraded than someone marching up to us in a coffee shop and saying, essentially, "You'll be sorry that you're atheists!" and asking a person why they exist.I wholeheartedly agree. What sort of individual would decide that it was acceptable to antagonize a complete stranger in this manner? As I have said before, I think part of the answer lies in the notion that the very existence of atheists is problematic for many Christians. They may be willing to consider us a theoretical possibility living in some distant city but not as their neighbors.Kristine's pos...

Community-Building: Atheist Support Groups
2008-02-08 12:17:00
In many parts of America, atheists do not feel free to be open about their atheism. Reasons range from social ostracization to threats to one's personal safety. Indeed, living as an atheist in many parts of American can be a lonely experience. Atheist groups do exist in many communities, but they tend to attract few active members, suggesting that they may not adequately meet the needs of other atheist residents. Could we learn something from the support group model? Perhaps atheist support groups would be an attractive option to consider. Many larger communities have some sort of informal groups for atheists, humanists, freethinkers, and the like. I do not have much personal experience with such groups because my community lacks one. When I examine such groups in this region, I find that most seem to operate as either loosely organized social clubs. Examples of common activities include potlucks, presentations on various freethought topics, and community cleanup projects. My complai...
