The one blog that can convince us atheists that God is awesome
2008-05-16 12:07:00
If not “awesome,” then at least ridiculously funny. Not even the Almighty Creator is immune from finding some of the shit in this (Godforsaken? Hee) world annoying, so He’s decided to create a blog about it. Over at Stuff God Hates, nobody’s safe from His Wrath. God takes potshots at cats, Africa, Patrick Swayze and anal ...
'Respect atheists', says Cardinal
2008-05-09 07:02:00
BBC reports, "Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor urges deeper understanding between believers and non-believersThe Archbishop of Westminster has urged Christians to treat atheists and agnostics with "deep esteem".Believers may be partly responsible for the decline in faith by losing sense of the mystery and treating God as a "fact in the world", he said in a lecture.Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor called for more understanding and appreciation between believers and non-believers.The leader of Roman Catholics in England and Wales said that a "hidden God" was active in everyone's life. The Cardinal's lecture at Westminster Cathedral comes after a spate of public clashes over issues such as stem-cell research, gay adoption and faith schools. He expressed concern about the increasing unpopularity of the Christian voice in public life, saying: "Our life together in Britain cannot be a God-free zone and we must not allow Britain to become a world devoid of religious faith and its powerful contrib...
Atheists no longer the most despised group in America. Thanks, Scientology!
2008-04-19 00:00:00
Source: Gallup Okay, so my title was quite harsh on Scientologists. The main intention was to create humour for atheist readers. But to Scientologists: it brings me no pleasure to say that the Church of Scientology is a dangerous abusive morally-indifferent criminal organization masquerading as a church. It is a money-making ...
Ten Commandments for Atheists, pt. 2
2008-04-15 23:13:00
The ironically named Christian, proprietor of Free Thinking Joy, asserts that the Ten Commandments are perfectly compatible with atheism. It is absurd on its face to think that any of the first four commandments, which center on man’s relationship to God, could be followed or even understood by atheists. Christian’s analysis is flawed, as ...
Ten Commandments for Atheists

Atheists have no rights in Chicago
2008-04-07 18:24:00
Just ask Representative Monique Davis, a Democrat mind you, who recently went off on Rob Sherman as he was speaking before the House State Government Administration Committee about the governor’s recent grant of $1 million to a Baptist church.   Representative Davis had this to say: …it?s dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy ...

Atheists are banned from an intelligent design movie

The banning of atheists from a prescreening of Ben Stein?s film, Expelled No Intelligence Allowed, drew hundreds of postings in the blogosphere this week.
FAQ: What do you atheists worship, then?
2008-03-20 16:49:00
It depends on what you mean by “worship”. If you mean admire, respect, try to emulate, or believe in, I can’t answer your question, as every atheist is different. There’s nothing in the “atheist” tag that specifies any of those about a person.  If you mean in a religious sense… the answer is simple: nothing. Now, ...
Hitchens Post
2008-03-05 19:04:00
An obviously hung over Christopher Hitchens surfaces on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" this a.m. on top of his game. Any guy who submits to full-body waxing (sac, back & crack) isn't going to let a mere hangover cramp his acerbic style. NewsBusters vidHitchenisms: "Anyone who like me when they think about the Clintons thinks about zombies, thinks about the undead, thinks about stakes through the heart, silver bullets and so on, has just received confirmation. It's as bad as we thought it was going to be.""She would do anything, she wouldn't mind running as George Wallace if it would get her the nomination."Hitchens on Obama: "I repeatedly call him a shallow and flaky candidate. I thought he was an incredibly successful shallow and flaky candidate." He goes off on Obama's Chicago church but keep in mind atheist Hitchens's anti-organized religion books and articles. He quit smoking (supposedly) last October after Vanity Fair paid for his body makeover. Although I'm not 100 percent...
Atheists/agnostics and religion-unaffiliated make up 4 and 16.1% of America
2008-03-03 17:20:00
The US Religious Landscape Survey from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life shows that 16.1 % of Americans have no particular religion, making the religion-unaffiliated the second largest faith-related group in the country, trailing only Roman Catholics who comprised 23.9% of the 35,000 survey respondents. The study also shows that the proportion of ...

Sunday School for Atheists
2008-03-01 19:20:00
“On Sunday mornings, most parents who don’t believe in the Christian God, or any god at all, are probably making brunch or cheering at their kids’ soccer game, or running errands or, with luck, sleeping in. Without religion, there’s no need for church, right?” TIME has a very interesting article on the topic of Sunday School ...

God Bless Atheists, or, How to Find Faith in Colorful Moving Pictures
2008-02-22 06:16:00
Many television shows seem to have a heavy religious component. Nowhere is this more evident than in the recent slew of science fiction that has invaded the airwaves over the past few years. If you pull reality television and unscripted television off the list (translate: game shows with bugs and game shows with bald men, ...

The Jewish Philosopher Profoundly Misunderstands Atheists
2008-02-18 18:22:00
I still believe in the Bible when it tells me that only a fool says that there is no God (Ps 14:1).  Regular readers know that I am no defender of atheism.  Unfortunately, a post by a religious Jew has recently come to my attention as part of my series on refuting Kelly O’Connor of ...

Watch Out for those Terrible Atheists
2008-02-13 22:50:00
by Lee SalisburyA recent study conducted by the University of Minnesota shows that atheists are more distrusted and despised than any other minority and that an atheist is the last person for whom Americans would vote in a presidential election. “Muslims, recent immigrants, gays and lesbians” all ranked higher than atheists in public acceptability. Furthermore, Americans are “least willing to allow their children to marry” atheists. State laws instill and perpetuate this attitude. Article IX, Sec. 2, of the Tennessee constitution states: “No person who denies the being of God, or a future state of rewards and punishments shall hold any office in the civil department of this state.” Arkansas, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Texas have similar laws.George H. W. Bush while campaigning for President in 1987 exhibited this same attitude, “I don’t know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This i...

2008-02-12 00:54:00
I call atheists being nasty to religious people religious bigotry, personally. Also, atheists can be religious, but that's a pedantic point.I personally think one can be very religious and polytheistic and thus tolerant of other peoples' gods, but being polytheistic I have a bias to believe that we are systemically more tolerant. In practice, a lot of it seems to be in the hands of the political powers that be more than religion itself.

Florida Atheists to Celebrate Darwin Day
2008-02-09 17:17:00
Florida atheists recently received some positive media attention in the form of an article by Lois K. Solomon in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The article mentioned that over 200 atheists are expected at Fern Forest Nature Preserve to celebrate Darwin Day."It's empowering to be among people who share your world view," said Madea, 60, a Broward Community College chemistry professor. "You don't have to apologize for who you are and what you believe."I am going to e-mail Ms. Solomon to thank her for her article.Tags: Florida, atheist, atheism, Darwin Day
The New Atheists and Their Recent Attacks

If you’ve looked over the best seller lists recently you may have noticed two new books that champion the cause of atheism. A Friend to Atheists
2008-01-08 19:59:00
A critic paid me quite a compliment today when he accused me of befriending and conversing with atheists and people who use the “F-word.” If only he knew the truth… …but I’ve got nothing to hide, so I’ll share it: My wife invited a lesbian couple over to dinner a while back. They haven’t accepted yet, ...
A clear case of differential negative treatment to Atheists on CityOnline
2007-12-27 03:51:00
Let me begin by saying that I am not some hyper-sensitive cry-wolf kind of person. But a clear case of differential negative treatment was enacted on CityOnline’s Christmas Eve discussion/debate on whether or not people should be saying “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays”. In the panel were Mark Robinson of the Humanist Association of Canada, and ...
Atheists put their faith in backlash of politics
2007-12-24 19:07:00
Not since the April 8, 1966, famous “Is God dead?” cover of Time magazine has atheism been the topic du jour. “Atheism has come into vogue in cycles pretty reliably for the past 300 years,” said Nick Gillespie, editor of Reason, a libertarian magazine. “These days, at least you won’t get burned at the stake, and ...

Shocking Finding: Atheists Can Be Good People
2007-12-19 00:17:00
With all the talk about a War on Christmas, and now a War on God, there remains far more prejudice against atheists than the religious in this country. PZ Myers uncovered one example. A study by Michigan State sociologist Ralph Pyle presented at this month’s joint meeting of the Society for the Scientific Study of ...
Children of Atheists
2007-12-17 07:38:00
I saw the gods plotting us. Tiny colored trapezoids on a giant game board. Risk. The dice our decisions. The continents our whims. They were bitter because we'd outgrown the worship. They were bored because we weren't that interesting anymore. Just fucking. Making more of ourselves. And paying too much for gas because seven seats are not enough. Even when there's only one of us. I saw the devil
How to avoid atheists
2007-12-16 23:56:00

GREEN BAY COUNSEL WHIZZES OFF ATHEISTS

The Green Bay City Council president paid for a nativity scene to be put up at City Hall after learning of an anti-religion group’s protest of one in Peshtigo. Christmas for Atheists?

A couple of weeks ago, in a Portuguese technology mailing list, someone suggested organizing for a Christmas dinner, and someone else (over)reacted by saying “sorry, wrong religion”. The Golden Compass: Chronicles of Narnia for Atheists?
2007-12-01 03:05:00
link to video The large computer generated battle in the trailer portends Lord of the Rings derivative cliche', but The Golden Compass looks fantastic and could very well be a great movie. Like TGC, The Chronicles of Narnia climaxes in one of those CG showcases. In addition, both movies have child leads, are set in a fantastic alternate reality that snuggles against our own, and are based on a children's book series that allegorizes an ultimate philosophy (Christianity for TCON and atheism for TGC). The producers of TGC hope that their movie mirrors TCON in another way: TCON pulled in an unGodly amount of money. At least part of TCON's success had to do with churches and peripherally pro-Christian institutions (talk radio) encouraging its members to view the movie. Parents entered the movie confident that they'd get two hours of "positive values." How will TGC' underlying anti-religion affect it's box office? Most people either won't know about it or won't care, but th...

God-Fearing Atheists? Part II
2007-10-30 19:27:00
More Problems with Atheism as a Purported School of Thought2. Scientism: An understanding of the scientific method – the recognition of science’s strengths, coupled with awareness of its limitations – is something shared by clear-thinking human beings, whether religious or atheistic. Scientism, in contrast, is the window dressing that atheism uses when it tries to present itself as a school of thought rather than the simple and tenable rejection of the idea of God. Scientism includes notions like reductionism and the idea that anything that science can’t address is necessarily unreal or less important than those topics that it’s well equipped to study.3. Reactivity and Negativity: Reading atheist writings, at least on the blogs, one could easily come away with the impression that the only institutions on the planet that contain elements of corruption are religious ones. Religion is the source of all evil. If only religion didn’t exist, God would be in his heaven and all ...
God-Fearing Atheists? Part I
2007-10-27 21:00:00
Disclaimer: I’m no expert on this topic; my impressions come mainly from reading atheist blogs from time to time. I’m open to being educated/corrected. Also, to atheists who may be reading: please note that my intention here is to be thought-provoking, not antagonistic. See, for example, the previous post where I’ve done something similar with theism and pantheism. Note also that in what follows, I distinguish atheism as the simple and understandable disbelief in God from atheism as a kind of members club posing as a School of Thought.Having an Attitude: William James describes religion in its broadest terms as a person’s “attitude toward life as a whole.” Atheism isn’t nearly that comprehensive; it isn’t religion’s opposite or an alternative to religion. An atheist can be a misanthrope, a Buddhist, a secular humanist, or someone who’s in despair because he’d like to be a theist but finds it impossible to believe in God. Atheism isn’t a cohesive school of tho...
