Mexico Wants More Athletes To Make The Cut
2008-05-06 11:11:00
Mexico so far has 66 athletes that have earned passes to participate in China's Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, all hoping to win some medal but the truth is that they only have chances to participate in 7-9 finals.Mexico still aims to send 85 athletes to Beijing-2008, while this Latin American country sent 114 athletes to Athens 2004, where they earned four medals, two silver and two bronze. Mexico's team sports will be absent from Beijing 2008 since their men's and women's soccer teams failed to earn Beijing 2008 passes, and so did this country's baseball team.Mexican sports officials have stated Beijing 2008 will be difficult for Mexican athletes, since local sports officials claim they have not had enough time to get ready for the games since the current Mexican Sports leader Carlos Hermosillo has only ben heading the post since 2006. Mexican sports officials only promise to fight from seven to nine finals in Beijing 2008."We cannot forecast how many medals we are going to win,...

Beijing’s Paramilitary Olympics: 10,500 Athletes - 94,000 Security
2008-04-14 06:16:00
the independent: What used to be called the Olympics are likely this summer to become the Paramilitary Games. China is planning to deploy more than 94,000 security personnel at the Beijing celebration in August, which means that uniformed and plain-clothes operatives will outnumber the 10,500 athletes by nearly nine to one. Leading what will be the biggest security effort the world has ever seen is the People’s Armed Police, a 660,000-strong militia force, which has been involved in the crackdown on Tibetan demonstrators in Lhasa. The PAP is also believed to have provided the squads of blue and white tracksuited paramilitaries who formed the controversial phalanx of guards for the Olympic torch as it made its chaotic way across London, Paris and San Francisco last week. On Thursday, the People’s Armed Police News reported that the PAP force was told to prevent any security threats that could upset the Games. The paper issued a “political mobilisation order” ...

Athletes and Philanthropy
2008-04-11 21:36:00
I was just reading Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's blog (www.38pitches.com) and it got me thinking about the relationship between athletes and philanthropy, because Curt is an avid supporter of charities that deal with ALS.  Although some athletes participate in charitable activity because they are forced to by their teams or leagues, I believe most contribute because they truly enjoy it.  Also, many athletes understand that they have been truly blessed to be in the position that they are, and that helping out those less fortunate than they are is a very easy decision for them.Athletes in this country are role models to millions of children, and these children will take notice to the charitable work that the athletes do.  Helping children realize the importance of helping out those in need at a young age is very important, and athletes have the opportunity to achieve this. There are two organizations listed on our site that were started by star athle...
Athletes who take Tibet stand 'face Olympic cut'
2008-04-11 17:57:00
Athletes who display Tibetan flags at Olympic venues ? including in their own rooms ? could be expelled from this summer?s Games in Beijing under anti-propaganda rules. Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said that competitors were free to express their political views but faced sanctions if they indulged in propaganda. He accompanied those comments with an admission that the Games were in ?crisis? after pro-Tibet protests engulfed the Olympic torch relay. given short shrift by Beijing, which bluntly told him to keep politics out of the Games" href="http://www.timesonline.co-.uk/tol/sport/olympics/article3-724308.ece">Mr Rogge?s call for Beijing to abide by its promise to address human rights was given short shrift by Beijing, which bluntly told him to keep politics out of the Games. URUMQI, China - The International Olympics chief said Thursday that the Summer Games scheduled for August in China are in ''crisis'' amid protests following the Olympic torch, and the sense of emergency surrounding the games grew Thursday when China declared that it had smashed a Muslim terrorist ring that was plotting to kidnap Olympic athletes. The Ministry of Public Security said it broke up a terror ring of 35 members of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement in this predominantly Muslim city in far west China. It said the group planned a variety of actions to disrupt the Aug. 8-24 games, including setting off bombs in Beijing and Shanghai. The arrests occurred March 26 to April 6, Public Security Ministry spokesman Wu Heping told a news conference in Beijing, adding that police also seized 21 pounds of explosives, eight detonators and two explosive devices.''The violent terrorist group plotted to kidnap foreign journalists, tourists and athletes during the Beijing Olympics and...

Female Athletes Fight, Assistant Football Coach Gets Fired
2008-03-28 05:42:00
The two lovely young ladies in the picture above are Patty Paniagua (L) and Katrina Johnson (R), and they’re student-athletes at Arizona Western College. Paniagua is a former All-American volleyball player for the school, and Johnson’s a redshirt sophomore basketball player. Apparently, when they’re not studying or playing ball the girls are kicking up dust. Patty and Katrina spent Monday night in jail after being hit with charges that were “misdemeanor in nature”. From the Yuma Sun: The arrests were the result of a series of assaults that occurred on campus at the AWC residence halls on Monday evening involving the two student-athletes, as well as several other students. One female student was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center for treatment of bumps and bruises, while another declined any further treatment from paramedics the night of the attacks. Looks like Patty and Katrina are the new Thelma and Louise… And the story gets better. During A...

Don?t get personal, earn athletes? respect
2008-03-07 17:27:00
Here are a few more highlights from two sports panels I attended a few weeks ago during the Illinois College Press Association. As expected, the writers and editors at the Chicago Tribune offered some terrific advice on a wide range of topics. On writing blogsThis is where writers put breaking news, notes and observations. For example, if Lou Piniella says anything during spring training, the paper?s baseball writer, Paul Sullivan, will add those comments on the blog. ?We reserve the nuanced, analytical stories for print,? says Tribune sports editor Dan McGrath. ? Many blogs offer fan perspectives, but this information is not always verified. Instead, many blogs offer rumors or rely on reporting done by newspapers. That?s where news organizations play a key role. ?Somebody has to provide that content,? McGrath said, ?But it has to be responsible content. ? Everybody has an opinion. We try to have an informed opinion.? ? Journalists love to get recognized for breaking stories online. ...

S’pore ‘won’t be trading hub of foreign athletes’
2008-03-06 01:40:00
S’pore ‘won’t be trading hub of foreign athletes’  By Kor Kian Beng    FOREIGN athletes are here to stay: They help put Singapore on the world map through their sporting achievements. Mr Teo Ser Luck, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, cited two China-born athletes - swimmer Tao Li and table tennis player Gao Ning - who won four and three gold medals respectively at the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand. Foreign sports talents like them contributed 34.9 per cent of Singapore’s 43 gold medals at the event, even though they made up only 7.6 per cent of the 423-strong contingent, he noted. He was responding to concerns raised in Parliament by Nominated MP Jessie Phua and Mr Seah Kian Peng (Marine Parade GRC) over the foreign talent scheme. Ms Phua, who is president of the Singapore Bowling Federation, recalled that out of 97 foreign sports talents, 54 had been granted citizenship. But only 37 of these citizens ...

Do Athletes Need Supplemental Antioxidants?
2008-02-29 12:14:00
As a result of training, all of the various oxidative processes are elevated in both aerobic and anaerobic athletes. The magnitude of these elevations depends on the intensity and type of exercise in which one is engaged. Also, some authors have speculated that the oxidative muscle damage associated with exercise may lead to the termination of muscular effort. In light of this knowledge, researchers and lay people alike have speculated that antioxidant supplementation may level the playing field, reducing tissue damage and soreness, improving exercise performance, and even prolonging life span. But do we need nutritional supplements to protect us from oxidative damage Or can our bodies handle the stress naturally through homeostasis? Regarding antioxidant homeostasis, most of the research done on endogenous antioxidant enzymes and their adaptation to exercise has been done using endurance protocols. From this research, aerobically trained individuals (including humans and rats) have...

February 29th is just another day to me. I don’t buy any of the Leap Year superstitions, and I don’t do anything special for our extra day. I am, however, amazed that a bunch of goofballs in tights could figure out that the Earth circles the sun in 365 1/4 days. Since the Leap Year is every 4 years, people with a birthday on February 29th get shortchanged.. And I’ve always wondered how they decided which day to celebrate their birthday in a non Leap Year. Do they have to pick February 28th or March 1st or can they go with the closest weekend? I would want the closest weekend. So which athletes were born in a Leap Year? I’m glad you asked.
