Athletics Sign Coco Crisp
2012-01-06 00:25:00
The Athletics have officially signed Coco Crisp to a two-year, $14MM deal that includes a club option for 2014, the team announced. News of the agreement ended 24 hours of rumors and speculation about Crisp's destination. He decided to return to Oakland despite interest from the Orioles, Cubs, Cardinals and many other teams. The deal will pay Crisp $6MM in 2012 and $7MM in 2013. The A's can exercise a $7.5MM option for 2014 or pay the center fielder a $1MM buyout. If the A's trade the Steve Comte client, he gets a one-time bonus of $250K. MLBTR's Tim Dierkes ranked Crisp 21st among MLB free agents at the beginning of the offseason. The switch-hitter led the American League with 49 stolen bases in 2011, hitting .264/.314/.379 with 27 doubles as Oakland's center fielder. The California native seemed to prefer West Coast teams, but explained in September that he was also looking to play on a winner and find a good "financial situation" for himself. Crisp joins Michael Taylo...
Red Sox Acquire Andrew Bailey, Ryan Sweeney From Athletics
2011-12-29 02:08:00
If you thought that Daniel Bard still might be the closer or in the bullpen when the Boston Red Sox acquired Mark Melancon, you probably had a 50% chance of being right. But after the latest acquisition by GM Ben Cherington, I'd say there's probably a 5-10% chance that Bard is in the bullpen next season. Cherington made another splash on the trade market on Wednesday when he acquired closer Andrew Bailey and OF Ryan Sweeney from the Oakland Athletics for OF Josh Reddick and minor league 1B Miles Head and RHP Raul Alcantara. Bailey is a former AL Rookie of the Year (2009) but has been plagued by injuries the past two seasons. However when he's healthy, he can be one of the better closers in the game. He came off the disabled list on May 29th for the A's, appearing in 42 games. In those 42 games, he was 0-4 with a 3.24 ERA and 24 saves. Over his three seasons with the A's, he was 7-10 with a 2.07 ERA and 75 saves. He was also an All-Star in 2009 and 2010. He's a low cost ...

When The Oakland Athletics Had Playoff Success
2011-10-06 11:00:00
..and it came before Moneyball….and at the expense of the Blue Jays. With the release of the movie Moneyball there is more talk of Billy Beane’s lack of success in the playoffs. If we want to look at a successful Oakland club, we need look no further than the 1989 version. This was a …

Loyola University: Norville Center for Intercollegiate Athletics opens! (SL
2011-03-04 05:34:00
The Norville Center is a facility designed for all aspects of a Loyola student-athlete's life. There are locker rooms for each of the varsity athletic teams, brand new weight rooms, academic advising centers, a lounge area and even conference rooms with walls coated in a special paint that will allow coaches to write on with dry erase marker. The facilities were a much needed change from the outdated and cramped resources formerly supplied by the Alumni Gym.
A trimmer Zambrano mows down the Athletics, but Cubs lose Opener
2011-02-28 06:28:00
Spring training results don't mean much except for the guys trying to make the team.  In that sense, Justin Berg can't feel too comfortable after giving up 7 runs and only getting one man out.  That gives him a robust ERA of 189.00.  He doesn't need to pack his bags yet, but he'll want to make sure he knows where his luggage is and maybe call some old friends in Iowa to see what they're doing this April.Other than Berg, here were some other performances of note:Carlos Zambrano looked great, not just on the mound but he looks like he's in the best shape he's been in 5 years.  On the mound he faced the minimum number of batters over...

South African athletics boss quits over Semenya gender bender probe
2009-08-24 22:00:00
AP Photo: Anja Niedringhaus Caster Semenya has been in the news quite often over the last week since the IAAF has requested a "gender verification test." Semenya shattered the current 800m Womens race at the World Athletics Championships by almost a full second and since then has been under constant scrutiny to determine whether she is a man, a woman or something in between. Several ChicagoNow bloggers like Anna Pulley of Sex and the Windy City and Dennis Byrne over at Dennis Byrne's Barbershop have added to the conversation.  Anna thinks that because Caster is so good, they're calling her sex into question while Dennis Byrne boils it all down to race. Athletics Get Best of Swisher Deal

The Oakland Athletics organization made some key trades in the 2007-08 off-season. Transaction Roundup: Athletics, Medders, Pena, German, Brower
2008-05-31 11:02:00
I woke up to a ton of small transactions this morning, so let's lead with them. In MLBTR-friendly transactions, the A's designated Lenny DiNardo and Kevin Melillo for assignment. The team made a bevy of other moves, though, recalling Travis Buck, Brad Ziegler, and Carlos Gonzalez, placing Joey Devine, Mike Sweeney, and Ryan Sweeney on the 15-day DL, and activating Kiko Calero and Eric Chavez from the DL. Brandon Medders, recently DFA by the Diamondbacks, has cleared waivers and has been assigned to AAA. Brayan Pena, recently DFA by the Braves, has been claimed by the Royals. Rangers RHP Franklyn German has refused an assignment to AAA, and will hit the free agent market. The Reds traded RHP Jim Brower to the Cubs for cash considerations. He has a double-digit major league ERA in limited time over the past two seasons. Joe Pawlikowski writes for River Ave. Blues, a Yankees blog, and can be reached here.
