An Open Letter to Attorney General Mukasey
2008-05-17 00:25:00
by Jayne Lyn Stahl Dear Attorney-General Mukasey: It is my understanding that the government now plans to collect DNA from anyone who is arrested by federal law enforcement, and that the samples will be stored in an effort to reduce violence in our society. Moreover, the U.S. government reportedly now intends to take a cheek swab from foreigners we detain, whether they've been charged or not. While Congress may have authorized Justice to expand DNA outreach, as citizens, and taxpayers, we're entitled to know what your intentions are. The concept of DNA collection is, in itself, not a heinous thing. Indeed, if science were to be used to combat wrongful conviction instead of setting up a blueprint for pursuing future incarceration, then I would be a strong proponent of taking DNA samples from everyone who is arrested, and storingthe samples. But, instead, the database in which the DNA will be stored, CODIS, may one day be a holding cell for vital genetic information, as well a...

New York Attorney general Andrew Cuomo is going after Film piracy.
2008-05-07 16:01:00
As we know bootlegging is illegal and it cost the state about 2 billion dollars a year. N.Y Attorney General Andrew Cuomo yesterday had a press conference and proposed stiffer penalties to those who get caught. First time offenders would face up to a year in jail and repeat offenders will get charged with a felony. I must confess that i do purchase these kind of movies and am watching one right now. With everything in this country going up i feel that there should be a compromise on movie ticket prices. I can't afford to buy gas, milk, rice, beer, cigarettes and watch a 10.00 dollar movie. Can i atleast catch a little more than just a preview for 2 bucks or just show me the ending. This will affect us all in the minority community. This also means that Africans, West Indians and the Chinese would be out of work meng. The clarity of the bootleg does'nt bother me at all, i find it amusing when the audience laughs or you see people standing up to go use the bathroom while il...

CT Attorney General lied about Lieberman ?hacker? case

We know why the US Attorney in Connecticut would want to protect Joe Lieberman by refusing to release the details of their investigation into the alleged “hacking” of Lieberman’s site the day of the Democratic primary. The last thing Karl Rove and Monica Goodling wanted was Lieberman embarrassed days before the general election by pointing ...

Ken Cuccinelli to declare for Attorney General Monday
2008-03-29 16:17:00
Republican State Senator Ken Cuccinelli is expected to possibly finalize the 2009 Republican ticket on Monday by declaring for Virginia Attorney General on Monday.   With Bill Bolling having declared last week that he will run for re-election as Lt. Governor and AG Bob McDonnell having already declared he will run for Governor, it could be a McDonnell-Bolling-Cuccinelli ticket for the Republicans.  Apparently Virginia Republicans still haven’t wised up to the fact that the politics of Virginia are rapidly changing and we’re no longer going to elect ultra conservatives to office. A patent lawyer and conservative Republican, Cuccinelli was elected to the General Assembly in a 2002 special election. He has been re-elected to the state Senate twice, most recently last year when he retained his office by a margin of about 100 votes. His office Friday announced a Monday afternoon press conference in Fairfax County. SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Ken Cuccinelli to declare for At...
Ohio Attorney General: ?Stupid? & ?Lying? Limbaugh Won?t Be Prosecuted

The Ohio Attorney General’s office reached a decision on whether or not to prosecute Rush Limbaugh the Great (Republican) for voter fraud.  He orchestrated the plan “Operation Chaos” and encouraged Republicans to change parties and vote for Clinton to prolong the Democratic fight.  The problem is that in Ohio, you must pledge allegiance to that party ...

Connecticut Attorney General To Tribal Casinos: No Smoking On My Watch
2008-03-14 16:50:00
Unrest is stirring in the states of Connecticut, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota among a portion of the Native American population This month, The Foxwood Resort Casino and the Mohegan Sun - owned by the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Tribes, respectively - have locked horns with Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal over whether or the CT smoking ban should apply to the sovereign tribe. In the other states (ND, WY, SD, and NE), the Republic of Lakotah - which numbers their Native American group at around 13,000 - are still protesting alleged mistreatment by the U.S. federal government.

Ohio Foreclosure Scene: Attorney General Marc Dann Takes Action
2008-02-07 22:39:00
In a move aimed at fighting the rising numbers of foreclosures in his state, Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann made a move to slow the foreclosure process down, and in doing so has attracted the attention of state officials and lawmakers across the country. Citing laws that require lenders to prove that a home is in default before a foreclosure can be pursued, Dann has attempted to make it requisite for lenders to adequately prove to the court through paperwork that they have the right to foreclose on a property before doing so. While this procedure is a law, in the past many courts have overlooked it when allowing foreclosures, since the paperwork takes time to assemble and prove. But in Dann's eyes, time is just what homeowners in danger of foreclosure need, and if the law provides more of it for them than they are getting, he think that homeowners should be entitled to it.
FLA Attorney General Looking at Legality of Cruise Fuel Charge
2008-02-06 03:10:00
Looks like a good number of people have complained about the fuel charge that has started officially on most cruise lines cruises this month. Enough to get the Florida Attorney General to look into it. While I do not think that much will be done about the charge itself, it will be interesting to see if anything happens with anyone that booked their cruise prior to the anouncement. Cruise lines gave booked guests a chance to cancel if they booked prior, or pay the fuel charge. I talked about this in November and December when all this was going down. Cruise lines were even sharing a portion of the fuel charge with travel agents that got their booked passengers to pay. If they are sharing the money then it did not go towards fuel. We will have to keep an eye on this one and see what happens.

PPP denies Dubai meeting between Zardari and Pak Attorney General
2008-01-23 09:25:00
The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has denied that PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari had met Attorney General (AG) Malik Muhammad Qayyum in Dubai. PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar said no such meeting had taken place and that it was not on Zardari's agenda. Babar said these baseless reports were fabricated by secret agencies to create confusion. Earlier, Geo News reported that Qayyum had warned Zardari to reconcile with the government otherwise cases pending against him would be reopened. According to the channel, Qayyum met Zardari in Dubai and told Zardari that the National Reconciliation Ordinance would expire on February 5. The channel said that the AG told Zardari that the government could issue the ordinance anew if Zardari believed in reconciliation with President Pervez Musharraf and cooperation with the government. The Attorney General warned Zardari that in case of non-cooperation from the PPP, cases against him and other party leaders would be reopened for hearing afte...

Deputy Attorney General Evading the Truth
2007-12-20 04:39:00
Following in the footsteps of Attorney General Micheal Mukasey, Mark Filip, President Bush's nominee for the Deputy Attorney General position, refused to correctly label waterboarding as torture during his confirmation hearing this morning. Considering Michael Mukasey's confirmation was not derailed by his disgusting display of false ignorance, there is no reason to believe that Mark Filip's confirmation for the #2 spot in the Justice Department will be hindered by his ridiculous claim that he just doesn't have enough information to interpret the law.Mark Filip's dodging of the "waterboarding as torture" question should not be surprising considering that nobody partnered with the Bush Administration has been allowed to answer that question and keep their jobs. Regardless, I just thought it was something we should know.

New Hampshire Attorney General to probe anti-Mormon calls
2007-11-16 20:55:00
The New Hampshire attorney general is investigating anonymous survey calls being made to voters in the early primary state that raise critical questions about Mitt Romney's Mormon faith, Romney's campaign said Friday. The calls, first reported by The Associated Press, query voters on whether they know Romney is a Mormon, that he received a draft deferment from Vietnam to serve a mission, that Mormons didn't allow blacks to hold the priesthood until the 1970s and that the LDS Church view the Book of Mormon as superior to the Bible. The calls - reportedly made by a Utah-based company to voters in New Hampshire and also in Iowa - make sympathetic statements about Sen. John McCain, though his campaign said Friday it has nothing to do with the surveys. "I am outraged by the cowardly telephone calls that hide behind my name in an effort to disparage one candidate and advance the candidacy of another," McCain said in a statement. "I was a target of these same tactics i...

OFHEO Response Letter to NY AG - Cuomo
2007-11-08 22:08:00
Yesterday's 300+ pt loss in the Dow was partially a response to New York Attorney General's demand from the OFHEO to investigate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the loans with Washington Mutual..Second, as part of a wider probe of the mortgage industry, the New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo demanded that Fannie Mae (Charts) and Freddie Mac (Charts, Fortune 500) examine whether mortgages sold to them by Washington Mutual were for homes that had been appraised at an artificially high price. The fear is that Fannie and Freddie might cut back on purchases and guarantees of loans from WaMu (Charts, Fortune 500). That would be a crippling blow for the bank, because the market for loans that Fannie and Freddie buy is the only part of the mortgage market that has substantial volume.Today, I received the email link for the response letter from James Lockhart with the OFHEO:...OFHEO shares your concerns about fraudelent appraisals and their impact on the mortgage markets and homeownershi...

A new torture czar?
2007-11-02 22:43:00
Many of us fought the confirmation of torture czar Abu Gonazales but in the end the Senate failed in their duty and approved the torture czar anyway. Well the Senate has another chance and they should not listen to the adolescent rantings of Bush and reject Mukasey. Now he's never going to say that waterboarding is torture, he can't. If he did Mukasey would be obligated to go after all those who approved and carried it out. Let Bush make a recess appoint but Senators let the people of the US and the world know you don't approve. My own right leaning local paper, The Oregonian, agrees in an editorial this morning.Bush, Mukasey and torture T he United States needs an attorney general with enough conscience and courage to state the truth about torture: It is a crime in any form, including waterboarding, an interrogation technique used by CIA officers, with authorization from President Bush, to question at least three high-level terrorism suspects in 2002 and 2003, according to The N...
