Domus Aurea: The Golden House of Nero in Rome
2008-02-14 09:28:00 One of the more recent attractions in Rome is actually one of the more ancient. The Golden House of Nero, what remains of it, has been excavated and the ruins are now available for public viewing. Though re-discovered during the Renaissance, they were the subject of a massive restoration project near the end of the 20th century. Constructed in 64 AD after the devastating fire that burned

All eyes on Nobel laureate Gore at tough climate talks
2007-12-13 05:49:00 Newly-minted Nobel laureate Al Gore headed Thursday for Bali where delegates at key talks on climate change fought against the clock for a negotiation breakthrough.Fresh from his Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, the former US vice president was due here with less than two days left in talks to forge a framework for action after the Kyoto Protocol's commitments end in 2012.The United States and some other countries are fighting European-led calls to mention specific goals for slashing carbon emissions, while negotiations are also stalled on key areas as to how to help developing nations fight climate change.Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday urged the conference to be guided by the wisdom of the Nobel laureates.Earlier: Al Gore accuses US of blocking climate dealIndonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
Racist Nobel Laureate Sports African Genes
2007-12-12 15:33:00 Here's the definition of irony- James Watson, co-discoverer of DNA and Nobel laureate, whose recent comments that black Africans aren't as smart as white people proved his racist nature, very likely had an African great-grandparent. From the NY Times; A new analysis of Dr. Watson?s genome shows that he has 16 times the number of genes considered to be of African origin than the average white European does ? about the same amount of African DNA that would show up if one great-grandparent were African, said Kari Stefansson, the chief executive of deCODE Genetics of Iceland, which did the analysis.?This came up as a bit of a surprise,? Dr. Stefansson said in an interview, ?especially as a sequel to his utterly inappropriate comments about Africans.?After the news of Dr. Watson?s genetic ancestry was published in The Times of London on Sunday, much of the British media played the news for a lark, with headlines like ?Revealed: Scientist Who Sparked Racism Row Has Black Genes? and ?DN...

2007-11-29 17:49:00 This is a contribution from my collegeue Michelle Tan who is very kind to share this with us. She has been encouraging to me in her insurance industry and this is what she has to say: Our annuity is one of the best in the local market. With 715 market share, we cannot be wrong. Blog Review: Doris Lessing, Nobel Prize Laureate
2007-10-29 10:04:00 On Oct. 11, the Swedish Academy announced that Doris Lessing (87) had won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Most bloggers reacted to the news by recounting meetings they have had with Lessing and by discussing the influence her writing has had on them as individuals and as writers. They also discussed some of Lessing’s books and the themes she explores in her writing.A few reacted by reviewing what has been said in newspapers about Lessing and her books. An even smaller minority, like T. K. Kenyon, the author of Rabid — used the news to launch a diatribe against the “self-appointed literati and men” who had unfavorably criticized Lessing’s science fiction. There was an almost unanimous agreement that the award was well-deserved and long overdue.Nury Vittachi, author of The Feng Shui Detective responded by revealing how, a few years ago, he had gone to a book signing Doris Lessing was hosting and about how she was holding one of his books when he approached her table.“So it end...
Annuities central to any retirement plan: Nobel laureate
2007-10-27 17:31:00 They can form core investment for retirees, especially if adjusted for inflation SINGAPOREANS might baulk at buying life annuities, but these ought to be the centrepiece of any retirement plan, according to Nobel laureate in Economics Robert Merton. During a visit to Singapore, the Harvard Business School professor acknowledged the sometimes poor reputation of annuities - which pay the holder a regular income for the rest of his life after he retires. Professor Merton said annuities are sometimes seen as having ‘high costs and high commissions’. But he cautioned Singaporeans not to confuse a ‘crummy version’ of an annuity with the incorrect notion that they are fundamentally flawed in concept. He said a life annuity is a helpful tool, as it provides peace of mind for policyholders who want to maintain their standard of living when they retire. Annuities are similar in structure to a defined benefit pension scheme that pays retirees a steady stream of inco...

Video ? Philips Impressive AmbiLight Aurea LCD TV in Action
2007-09-27 13:07:00 In truth, when we initially came across Philips AmbiLight technology we were somewhat sceptical as to whether it would genuinely add to the viewing experience or whether their AmbiLight technology was something that, however cool and desirable (dare I say ?trendy??), was merely an aesthetic embellishment that, in practice, serves merely as a rather gimmicky selling point ? the question is, has this video put an end to our indecisiveness?

Or the "Phantom of Fine Hall," a figure many students had seen shuffling around the corridors of the math and physics building wearing purple sneakers and writing numerology treatises on the blackboards. The Phantom was John Nash, one of the most brilliant mathematicians of his generation, who had spiraled into schizophrenia in the 1950s. His most important work had been in game theory, which by the 1980s was underpinning a large part of economics. When the Nobel Prize committee began debating a prize for game theory, Nash's name inevitably came up--only to be di...
