Click on the above image to see the full size page.Oh, what a day- it's the Australia Day holiday, where Australians of all ilks get together and celebrate being Australian, (whatever that means) mateship (whatever that means), Australian Culture (Banjo Patterson poems anyone?) and drink on average, our body weight in nasty beer that no other country would accept. VB, as we all know, stands for Very Bad, and they call XXXX by that name because you can't write, "Shit" on a can of beer. This all of course, has nothing to do with writing, but has a lot to do with your humble harried writer.I live on the nightclub strip of this city, which by and large is a fairly easy life- Adelaide is not known as the most active or rowdy city in Australia. Some nights are harder than others. it was not the amorous couple making love in my door way (I'm not sure that was love they were making) nor was it the drunken yahoos tooting their horns and screaming, "Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi," at th...

Happy Australia Day - Australian Statistics
2008-01-27 22:50:00
With another Australia day weekend past us, it is always interesting to know what is happening in and around Australia, what is changing and future trends. In fact for some of my financial analysis I look at past and future trends to try and gauge the impact of various macroeconomic issues (eg age demographics shows an ageing population, which suggest superannuation companies like AMP can benefit from this trend). It is also just interesting to see what is happening in Australia. The best site for this is the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) website which has tons of useful statistics. Best of all, it is all free - thanks to our taxes! Here are some national statistics you should be aware of:- Australian Population : 21,194,703 (1.02% of world population). Projected population by 2100 : between 22.4 and 43.5 million. 7%?10% of the population is expected to be over 85 yrs old by 2101! - Number or employed Australians is 10,588,500, with unemployment rate at a historically low 4....
Fellow Aussies (An Alba) Honor Heath At NYC Australia Day
2008-01-27 22:24:00
The celebration of Australia Day in New York turned into a somber affair on Friday night at the Waldorf-Astoria while the 1,200 guests paid a stirring tribute to Heath Ledger. The guests, including Jessica Alba, Miranda Kerr and Nip/Tuck's Julian McMahon stood and bowed their heads for a moment of silence in honor of the actor. While Jessica didn't have Cash by her side on the red carpet, Julian gladly took over her arm and baby bump duty. Among other statements honoring Heath, New York Consul-General John Olsen read a stirring statement from Ledger's father. He said, "Heath is and always will be an Australian...He adored his home. His last two weeks with us over Christmas in Perth were just bliss...Heath did not become an actor for the fame or fortune. He just loved his craft and he loved helping his friends...He loved chess and skateboarding too...My image of Heath in New York is him with his skateboard, a canvas bag and beanie...That was Heath." A brief, private memorial ser...

Australia Day
2008-01-27 11:17:00
Brisbane river by South Bank.My best shot without a tripod.I love the midnight blue sky color.Yesterday was Australia Day and there were celebrations lined up in every state in Australia. As we were in Brisbane, we made our way to South Bank by the river to see the firework display. The throngs of people walking from the car park to the riverside was not as large as it would be at these kind of events in China and I was glad. The crowd had already built up by the time we were by the pier and most of the nice spots were taken by Aussies celebrating their National day. Everyone was there to catch the fireworks display. Everywhere you see patriotic Aussies with the Australia flag tattooed on their faces, arms or dressed in their flag colors. Some were waving flags around.I didn't have my tripod but made do with David's shoulders to try and take a night shot of the fireworks. I did manage to take a video of the finale which was a really burst of color and sound. I am trying to upload t...

Australia Day 2008

Congratulations to all those Australians honoured for Australia Day - and we also salute all those that make enormous contributions to the country in their own small way, but because they are not well known sports people, musicians or film stars nobody seems to want to honour them. [would the Australia Day honours be political?] Without ...
Australia Day - What is Australia Day?
2008-01-25 12:40:00
Australia Day - What is Australia Day?Australia Day is the official national day of Australia, which commemorates the establishment of a settlement and penal colony at Port Jackson by Captain Arthur Phillip, who later became the first Governor. Australia Day is celebrated on 26 January annually, and has been declared as an official public holiday in all states and territories of Australia. Known also as Anniversary Day or Foundation Day, Australia Day is widely considered to be an important day in the history of Australia. On Australia Day, the winner of the Australian of the Year award is announced by the Prime Minister; the award is given to any Australian citizen who has shown a "significant contribution to the Australian community and nation", and is an "inspirational role model for the Australian community". Subcategories of the award include "Young" and "Senior Australian of the Year", and an award for the "Australian Local Hero". Recorded celebrations date back to 1808, and i...

Awesome Australia Day Photo - Perth
2007-06-11 11:01:00
(Click the picture to make it larger)Sometimes the sky itself is the best show in town. On January 26, people from Perth, Australia gathered on a local beach to watch a sky light up with delights near and far. Nearby, fireworks exploded as part of Australia Day celebrations. On the far right, lightning from a thunderstorm flashed in the distance. Near the image center, though, seen through clouds, was the most unusual sight of all: Comet McNaught. The photogenic comet was so bright that it even remained visible though the din of Earthly flashes. Comet McNaught continues to move out from the Sun and dim, but should remain visible in southern skies with binoculars through the end of this month. The above image is actually a three photograph panorama digitally processed to reduce red reflections from the exploding firework. Thanks to MS for this great photo.
