2009-04-24 11:07:00
This website won SXSW's award for "Experimental Websites" back in March, and looking at it now, I can totally understand why.  The site is by far one of the most unique things I've seen on the internet this year.  Beyond that I'm a totally avid reader, and this site will tickle the fancy of any bookworm or lover of short stories.  Enter into the delightfully interactive story-telling world of the aptly titled We Tell Stories.

Saudi Arabia: Two Men Detained For Trying To Get Woman Authors Autograph
2009-03-07 16:11:00
No autograph for you. Oh the joys of living under Islamic Law. (CNN) -- Saudi Arabia's religious police detained two male novelists for questioning last week after they attempted to get the autograph of a female writer at a book fair in Riyadh, according to local media reports.According to the Saudi daily newspaper Al-Watan, Abdu Khal and Abdullah Thabet approached female writer Halima Muzfar when they were stopped by police. Both novelists, who were held for questioning but not charged with a crime, are demanding an apology from the conservative Muslim kingdom's Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. The commission, feared by many Saudis, is made up of several thousand religious policemen charged with, among other things, enforcement of dress codes, mandatory observance of prayer times and segregation of the sexes.Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam called Wahhabism and punishes unrelated men and women who are caught mingling in public.Saud...

When Chicago Bulls assistant coach Bob Ociepka says "nice shot" in his free time, you can bet he's not talking about basketball. Ociepka, who lives in Arlington Heights, loves mob movies. Loves them. He's studied them all, from the James Cagney flicks of the 1930s all the way up to contemporary films like "American Gangster." The crime and violence inherent in such films is part of the

Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri
2008-12-03 06:18:00
An alternative title to Unaccustomed Earth could very well be-”The distraught lives of Bengali Americans”. It is no secret that Lahiri writes about Bengali Americans, their travails and search for identity. It was the prevalent theme in the much vaunted “Interpreter of Maladies.” It was the same theme expanded into a novel in “The Namesake.” ...
Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh
2008-11-16 17:06:00
To read an Amitav Ghosh novel is not merely to get a glimpse of the best of contemporary Indian writing, but also a snapshot of an oft-ignored episode of history. The “Sea of Poppies” is no exception. After a somewhat lukewarm tryst with Sunderbans and the Gangetic Dolphin (Hungry Tide), the first novel of the ...
Election Maps, Steelers and Great Authors
2008-11-06 15:50:00
My life the last few days has focused almost entirely on the election and the Steelers? Monday night game, though not necessarily in that order. I have a few links about both:I love maps and have spent way too much time looking at the county-by-county results of the Presidential election. From the map, only one county in the six New England states went to McCain: Piscataquis, Maine.Conversely, McCain won every Oklahoma county, and Obama only won two counties each in Wyoming and Utah and three counties in Kansas and Nevada. Of course, winning Clark County, home of Las Vegas, was enough for Obama to carry that state. McCain also won both Mineral counties. That would be Mineral County, Nevada where 49 total people voted and Mineral County, Colorado which had a whopping 64 voters. I spent over 20 minutes trying to verify these numbers from the Mineral County government websites, but I don?t think these counties have actual websites.According to the Pennsylvania map from the Pittsb...

Fine Art of Travel Writing

Travel writing is a fine art; accepted literary genre that is read. Writers who are gifted with an ability to understand what they see and can breathe life into a place when they narrate their travel experiences. The Internet that is wrongly considered as a pedestal for instantaneous scribbles mixed with emoticons and indecipherable abbreviations has already become a place to find some good travel literature, travelogues and travel stories in addition to online trading of travel services. It can be one of the best display places for travel writers to showcase what their countries have to offer.Travel is prosperity and leisure pursuit, which is a result of many things: history, heritage, culture, natural beauty and a quest to know what is unknown and meet wonderful people.Pakistan is a land of geographical, geological, and natural contrasts and has every thing nature could bestow; from some of the places like Mehr Garh in Balochistan and Harappa in Punjab where some of the initial hu...

Gather's First Chapters Contest Gives Opportunities for New Authors
2008-09-07 14:50:00
The fun social networking website, Gather.com offers a contest called "First Chapters." In this contest, writers share their first chapter with the Gather community and then they vote whether they liked the chapter or not. If the writer receives a high enough score, then the writer's story moves onto the next chapter where readers will vote again. What a fun, dynamic way to draw attention to a novel. In this same spirit, we are running our own contest.Publishers and agents are attracted to manuscripts that have potential. They feel even better about books that already have the support of readers. For this reason, I am asking for your help. Your vote could help a novel be published. The process is simple and free.Looking for more?A Portrait of Josephine is a soon-to-be published novel by Allison Frederick. Authors have you been You Tube’d?
2008-05-09 02:18:00
Here’s some more ways to use video clips for authors. 1) Have you been You Tube’d? If you haven’t this is the #1 place to load your book video. 2) Put your video on your own website, don’t let a single visitor land on your site without getting the touch and feel of your book. 3) Send a sample of your book video to every media contact you pitch. Never let a press kit leave your office without a disc. 4) Got a social networking page? If you do (and you should) add the clip or a link to it on the page. 5) When you pitch the media, don’t forget to insert a link to the trailer in your email. Don’t send it as an attachment; chances are an over aggressive spam filter will have it for lunch. 6) Blog about it every chance you get. No, I’m not talking about repeating a blog over and over but blog on what success you’ve had thanks to your video. And oh, yes, add a link to the book video too. 7) Trying to get a signing but have been unsuccessful? Let your book speak for itse...

How To: Adding the Post Authors Gravatar To Their Individual Posts
2008-04-28 13:00:00
One thing I am really excited about is that Gravatars are really starting to gain popularity now that Automattic has purchased and is supporting them.  And now that support is built right into WordPress, it opens up a lot of options for WordPress users. The most common place you’ll find a Gravatar is usually with an individual comment to help comments stand out.  Another place you will sometimes see them is in the sidebar, like we have it setup here at Hack WordPress.   One thing, however, that people are slowly coming around to is using Gravatars with blog posts to identify the author of the post.    This is something that is a great idea for a multi-author blog and something I’ve considered doing on this website. So, how would you go about setting up Gravatars to display with each individual post?   Over at ThemeShaper, Ian Stewart recently shared an easy way to do this.   You just need the following code: <?php echo get_avatar( get_the_author_email(), '...

The authors of Buffalo Rumblings have you covered. Over the entire week leading into the draft, the four authors of Rumblings have unveiled the second version of their Authors Mock, in which each author makes Bills selections for all seven rounds of the NFL Draft. Rounds 1-5 have already been unveiled (see below for picks); here's how each author sees the closing rounds of the draft shaking out for the Bills: Brian Galliford's Picks 6-179: Todd Blythe, WR, Iowa State - I chose Blythe in Version One of this mock draft, and here he'll remain. I like Blythe's size and red zone production, and the Bills reportedly do as well. He's got growth potential and could eventually ...

Rumblings Authors Mock, V2.0: Round Three Picks
2008-04-22 14:24:00
After unveiling our first and second round picks over the last two days, the authors of Buffalo Rumblings are now ready to unveil the ultra-important third round of our Authors Mock Draft. Through two rounds (eight selections total), the four of us have predicted a whopping seven players will be the newest Buffalo Bills come this weekend (Oklahoma WR Malcolm Kelly is the only repeat pick). Here's how we chose in round three: Brian Galliford's Pick 3-72: Tyvon Branch, CB, Connecticut - I have Branch rated as the #8 corner on my board, which leaves out players who would struggle in Buffalo's preferred style of defense. Branch has outstanding straight-line speed (4.31), is tough and competitive, has excellent leadership qualities and works his tail off. He's talented enough to start in a Cover 2 defense in this league, plus he can return kicks. He'd be a great fit as a dime back to start (while upgrading the team's special teams units), and has enough talent and potent...

Rumblings Authors Mock, V2.0: Round Two Picks
2008-04-21 14:36:00
With round one of the second go-round of the Buffalo Rumblings Authors Mock unveiled yesterday, it's naturally time to move on to round two. For anyone who missed it, each author here is predicting all ten Buffalo Bills picks; the real selections, of course, will be made this coming weekend. Round two is coming at you right now; round three, rounds four and five, and rounds six and seven will all be posted on successive days, ending this project on Thursday. Without further ado, here are the authors' second-round picks: Brian Galliford's Pick 2-41: John Carlson, TE, Notre Dame - I'm of the mind that the Bills need to find a starting tight end in this draft, relegating Robert Royal back to his more suitable #2 TE role. I've been a big advocate of Texas A&M's Martellus Bennett, and still have him as the top tight end available this year, but he could very well be gone by the time the Bills pick in the second round. Carlson is not quite as quick but is tougher afte...

Rumblings Authors Mock, V2.0: Round One Picks
2008-04-20 14:34:00
Just a hair over a month ago, the authors of Buffalo Rumblings brought you the first version of our Authors Mock Draft. In that exercise - the first installment viewable here - each author predicted the Buffalo Bills' picks in all seven rounds of the upcoming draft. Since that time, several things have changed, most importantly of all that the Bills now have more picks. So, in the week leading up to the draft, we are now going to publish Version 2 of our Authors Mock Draft. Once again, we are not going to predict trades, and we will make picks based on selections the Bills currently have. All seven rounds will air this week; it will be a chance for us to discuss prospects and strategies one last time leading into the draft. Without further ado, here are the Round One picks: Brian Galliford's Pick 1-11: Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State - Buffalo needs a starting wide receiver, Thomas is the consensus #1 receiver in the draft, he fits Buffalo's offense and has outstandi...
