Adobe bloated software, and how to disable automatic updates
2007-12-20 16:13:00 TechSpot Blog – Personally, I hate the trend of software adding bloat in subsequent versions as much as I hate people saying an application is bloated just because it?s no longer a simple one-dimensional kind of program. That said, Adobe current crop of products have to be some of the worst in this sense. At this point I?m sure ... read more

Stop Windows From Nagging You To Reboot After Automatic Updates!
2007-09-23 13:35:00 We've all seen it, and we are all annoyed by it. We are particularly annoyed when we have 20 windows open and are multitasking like monkeys in a banana tree (that doesn't make any sense does it?). Anyway, that annoying prompt can be turned off with a little thing called Group policy. The cool thing about group policy is you can apply it to one machine using local a local policy, or many machines at once through an OU in active directory. Either way, it is setup the same. From the Run line type gpedit.msc then click OK. Select local computer policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Re-prompt for Restart with Scheduled Installations.Check the box that says enabled, and set the time interval between prompts in minutes. If you want to not be bothered by the prompt at all, check the box that says disabled. I wouldn't recommend this though, because some patches and updates won't take effect until after a reboot, and if you're l...

Tip: Kill The Windows Automatic Updates Restart Dialog
2007-02-26 21:49:01 There is no end to the pain and suffering that this annoying dialog has given me. The worst is when the only option is to restart, as forced by the IT people at work. The only way to get around it in this case is to move it off of your screen as much as possible so you can continue working. However, there is a workaround that I just discovered, and I wish I had known about ever since I installed Windows XP. Just kill the process ‘wuauclt.exe’ in task manager. Or, if you’re unfamiliar with task manager, do the following: go to the command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd) and type “sc stop wuauserv” (without the quotes, of course). Voila! [via Digital Inspiration] UPDATE: Just killing the ‘wuauclt.exe’ process did not work for me, at least at work. When I killed it, the dialog just popped back up again. However, using the “sc stop wuauserv” worked like a charm. It seems that when you kill the process, the windows servi...
Windows Automatic Updates
2007-02-23 02:39:01 I generally update all of the Windows Updates… especially the security ones. I do not have any of my computers set on automatic. I have it set where I see the popup and I can make the determination of whether or not I want the update. I refuse to download Internet Explorer 7 and the following: Windows Geniune Advantage Notification. According to Microsoft, this tool notifies you if your copy of Windows is not geniune. If your system is found to be non-geniune, the tool will help you obtain a licensed copy of Windows. Even if your copy of Windows is geniune, why would you want this update? I just think this is more crap that Microsoft wants on your PC.
IE 7 automatic updates get green light for XP users
2006-12-02 16:15:08 Microsoft has begun the automatic update process for users of IE 6 on computers running genuine versions of Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 and Window XP x64, with the rollout process expected to take months. That?s because Microsoft doesn?t want to flood their servers with requests for IE 7 updates from users around the world. English language users started seeing requests to update the IE browser from November 1. On Wednesday November 15, users of Windows XP or better in German, French, Spanish, Finnish, Brazilian Portuguese and Arabic will start seeing update notifications as well, with other languages to follow throughout 2007.Users are not forced into upgrading to IE 7 right away, with users able to block the update from installation, with administrators also able to prevent the update on their business fleets of computers until they are ready to allow the update to happen.
