A look at Automattic: The anatomy of a Third Pipe business
2008-01-24 20:54:00
Something is going on in the business world that is profound. Small, nimble, tiny groups of people are leaving the big multinational companies in the dust as they blow by them doing huge things, quickly and cheaply. This is my first installment in a series of posts on where I think the roles of big ...
Automattic Secures Another Round of Financing
2008-01-24 15:01:00
Yesterday I was excited to see a post pop up in my WordPress dashboard over on Mark Jaquith’s website announcing that WordPress has secured $29.5 million dollars in their second round of financing.   Congratulations to Automattic!  The investor this time is the New York Times so I think it is safe to say that they are doing something right. While it may not seem like $29.5 million will go very far in today’s world, when you consider that they’ve gotten by on only $1.1 million since 2006, it somehow seems like a much bigger number.   So what does this mean for WordPress?  It looks like Automattic currently has 17 employees.   If I was a betting man, I would bet the house that they will be hiring soon.   These employees can be used not only towards improving the WordPress software, but can also be applied towards improving the WordPress Codex, forums, or improving their efforts against fighting spam.  Want to know more?  You can get more directly fro...
Automattic Gets Paid Nearly 30 Million
2008-01-23 22:05:00
So news has broken about Automattic getting $29.5 million in their “series B” round of funding from a group including the New York Times. Everyone has been asking me how I feel about this influx of cash into Automattic, and my response has been simply to smile. With WordPress.com doing very well, and growing by leaps and bounds, I really see no reason why investors wouldn’t want to take part in the Automattic brand. If you want to read more about the who’s and the what’s, you can check out the recent post from Matt and Toni. This whole purchase really gets me asking many questions and wondering about the possible future for the company. WordPress.com has so much to offer, will Automattic open up some form of advertising model that users can use to monetize their blogs? Will Automattic acquire more services like they did with Gravatar? Will Automattic expand their hosted software offerings? Matt Mullenweg has written on his blog: Automattic is now ...
(Automattic) WordPress Receives $29-million
2008-01-23 06:57:00
TechCrunch and GigaOm are reporting that Automattic provider of the WordPress open-source blogging software and spam filter Akismet, has raised $29.5M in a Series B round of financing led by True Ventures. Other participants in the round include The New York Times, Polaris Ventures, and Radar Ventures. The large injection of capital will not only go towards the development of Akismet and WordPress (the downloadable software) but the development of Wordpress.com (its hosted blogging platform), Gravatar (its avatar offering), and BBPress (an upcoming hosted bulletin board product) as well. This is interesting news, i have a new fascination for bbPress and i hope with this new round of cash injected we will see even more development on the bbPress front. 2008-01-17 22:46:00
WordPress Publisher Blog is (going to be) written by various team members at Automattic and their goal is to help all publishers get the most out of WordPress. They will cover features that are often overlooked, highlight plugins that extend WordPress functionality and showcase interesting sites being built with WordPress. They are looking for publishers working on innovative projects using WordPress and would like to field questions from users. From the comment that Raanan left on PressedWords, it would appear that they want to focus on large WordPress installations that are doing lots of custom work and help publishers find the proper resources. A definite daily read! Read it at the source ShareThis

Automattic has bought Gravatar!
2007-10-24 23:31:00
Wow, I must be way behind the times as I’m 6 days late posting this. This has to be the perfect match for Gravatar! I have always loved the concept behind Gravatar, although have never wanted to integrate it due to the issues they were having serving the images. However, now the problem is solved ...

Automattic Acquires Gravatar
2007-10-18 06:03:00
For me this is far more interesting than Google acquiring some business and ruling the world. Being a Wordpress lover and user for years and at the same time, admiring the whole idea and service by Gravatar - there could be nothing better than these two services being entwined at the hearts. Here are some notes ...
Six Apart and Automattic Compared
2007-07-10 16:06:00
Six Apart & Automattic Compared: A comparison of two of the three blogging juggernauts on the web. Though the comparison is mildly interesting from a historical novice’s point of view, I think the article is missing a few things. Since it was written by a business professor, I would have expected more analysis and forecasts ...
Extending Automattic?s Sidebar Widget
2007-05-20 10:52:00
As you can see, I’ve got a new theme for this website. I’ve tried my best to unclutter the site which is what I thought it was before. Do give me your feedback, if there are ways to make the site look better. As part of this migration, I wanted to introduce some new features on the site. You’ll see new things on the sidebar like Recent Comments, and Popular Posts. The blog uses Automattic’s Sidebar Widgets extensively. As part of this process, I realized that many of these plugins like the Popularity Contest plugin for getting the most popular posts is not directly integrated into the widgets. Rather than ditching the plugin, I studied the Sidebar Widget code to figure out the simplest way to integrate it. I’m not sure if there are other ways, but what I’m describing below is in its own way very simple, especially if you are comfortable with PHP. © 2007 Anuj Seth ---Related Articles at Online Presence:New Theme for...

Guess what dear Bloggers? Wordpress.com has a treat for us and that is no ordinary treat.
