Comic Book Review: Dark Avengers #2
2009-02-19 23:20:00
The Revolution was pleasantly surprised with Dark Avengers #1. Bendis turned in a solid debut issue. I have been highly critical of Bendis' run on New Avengers, so I was not expecting much from Dark Avengers. After a good debut issue, I am hoping that Bendis might have a quality title in store for us with Dark Avengers. Let's hope that Bendis can keep this ball rolling with Dark Avengers #2. Creative Team Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Mike Deodato Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin in Latveria, 37 years ago. We see Morgana walk into a tent where we see Victor Von Doom as a little boy. Victor is sleeping. Morgana states that she is going to kill Doom as revenge for him betraying her trust. That Doom stole her knowledge of the black arts. Morgana says that the world will be spared Doom's future selfish villainy. Morgana is about to stab Doom when she realizes tha...
Comic Book Review: New Avengers #49
2009-02-03 21:45:00
The Revolution has continually been unimpressed with Bendis' New Avengers. And the past year New Avengers has become practically unreadable with the Secret Invasion related stories. I hope that Dark Reign presents a fresh start for New Avengers. Bendis impressed me with his work on Dark Avengers #1 and hopefully he can import some of that energy and excitement over here on the lackluster New Avengers. The shocking direction of having Luke Cage join up with Norman Osborn was pure genius by Bendis and should provide the foundation for numerous interesting stories on New Avengers. Let's go ahead and hit this review for New Avengers #49. Creative Team Writer: Brain Michael Bendis Pencils: Billy Tan Inks: Matt Banning Art Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 4 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 5 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with Norman, Luke Cage, Venom and Bullseye arriving at the Raft where the government is holding 76 Skulls as prisoners of war. ...
Comic Book Review: Mighty Avengers #21
2009-01-31 14:00:00
The Revolution has been looking forward to Mighty Avengers #21. Bendis is officially off the title and Dan Slott is in. And I could not be more excited. I have been incredibly unimpressed with Bendis? work on New Avengers and Mighty Avengers ever since the end of Civil War. Super hero team titles simply do not play to Bendis? strengths. On the other hand, Slott?s talents should lend him to being a good match for a super hero team title. I am expecting to finally get to see the Avengers as a team with a story that actually deals with the Avengers themselves. Slott?s Mighty Avengers should fill the craving for a classic Avengers title that has been missing since Bendis took over the Avengers franchise. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Mighty Avengers #21. Creative TeamWriter: Dan Slott Pencils: Koi Pham Inks: Allen Martinez & Danny Miki Art Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: W...
Comic Book Review: Dark Avengers #1
2009-01-24 16:15:00
The merciless onslaught of new titles spinning out of the wake of Secret Invasion begins with Dark Avengers #1. Marvel wants our money and is giving us plenty of reasons to give it to them with several intriguing new titles coming out over the course of the next month. Even though I have been less than impressed with Bendis? work on New Avengers and Mighty Avengers ever since the end of Civil War, I have still decided to give Dark Avengers #1 a try. The main reason is that I think that Bendis might actually be on to something with this title. The roster looks interesting and I think that Bendis has something special in store for the reader with this title. I also like Deodato?s artwork so if nothing else I will enjoy looking at this issue. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Dark Avengers #1. Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael Bendis Art: Mike Deodato Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10 S...
Avengers VI - Real Cool Hits [1964]
2008-10-26 14:02:00
No mere footnote in surf music history, the Avengers VI were an exceptional group of clean-cut rockers in matching suits from Anaheim, CA, whose somewhat forgotten classic, "Time Bomb" was covered in recent years by both Man or Astro-man? and the Bomboras. This reissue of their first recording, which came out in 1966, was originally intended to be promotion for the Good Humor Ice Cream Company. The cover features them on top of and around an ice cream truck sporting matching aqua-colored suits. Nearby, an ice cream man displays a Popsicle. But the album is also a very impressive and enjoyable collection of originals and covers including a knockout take on "Downtown," as well as Henry Mancini's "Mr. Lucky" and more obvious choices like "Pipeline" and "Peter Gunn." It's the originals, though, that make the case for the band being a forgotten gem amongst the legions of '60s surf groups. Featuring scintillating organ riffs and three guitars going berserk, songs like "None But the Bra...

Comic Book Review: Mighty Avengers #17

Secret Invasion tie-ins have been the most inconsistant books we get in the bunker. We, at the Revolution, have seen some great tie-ins. Others have been poorly done. Let us spin the wheel and see where this one fits in.Creative TeamWriter: Brian Michael BendisPencils: Khoi PhamInks: Danny Miki and Andy LanningArt Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: Our story starts several months ago at a place called Bruno's Nighttime Cafe. He likes it better than living in New York. The man agrees. As he takes a sip, he says that is what he was looking for. He added it to his list of the top ten best things on the planet. Comic Book Review: New Avengers #41: Secret Invasion
2008-06-02 21:59:00
Bendis continues to do a fine job on the Secret Invasion tie-in issues. The Revolution by far and away finds the tie-in issues more captivating than the actual story itself over on Secret Invasion. I am confident that Bendis will turn in another great read with New Avengers #41. Let?s do this review.Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael BendisArtist: Billy TanArt Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 5 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 6.5 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with scene from Secret Invasion #2 where the ridiculous plot device, I mean Tyrannosaurus Rex conveniently rampages through the fight between the 1970?s heroes and our present day heroes. We see that Spider-Man gets thrown by the T-Rex and flies through the air and lands quite some distance away from the fight scene. And conveniently enough out of all the places that Spider-Man could land, he lands directly in front of Ka-Zar and Shanna. We proceed to get the typical if not well worn to slightly beaten...
Comic Book Review: Mighty Avengers #14: Secret Invasion
2008-05-24 18:59:00
Bendis has impressed the hell out of me with his excellent work on the Secret Invasion tie-in issues on New Avengers and Mighty Avengers. As critical as I have been about the lackluster story over on Secret Invasion itself, I am as equally effusive in my praise for these tie-in issues. It appears that Mighty Avengers #14 is going to focus on the Sentry and what Bendis has in store for him during the Secret Invasion event. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Mighty Avengers #14.Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael BendisPencils: Khoi PhamInks: Danny MikiArt Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with a flashback scene to ?Years ago.? So it looks like the marketing machine is finally getting in gear for The Incredible Hulk. We've got an new poster and a new trailer for the film which shows more action than we've seen before. I'm hoping that this Hulk film ends up surprising everyone and exceeding expectations. I'd love to see a kick-butt Incredible Hulk movie as a follow up to the previous, much slower moving version. Check out both the new trailer and the poster below. Sorry about the quality of the trailer but there's not a better copy out there yet. The Incredible Hulk opens on June13. Comic Book Review: Avengers/Invaders #1
2008-05-12 23:57:00
The Revolution has been anxiously awaiting Avengers/Invaders #1 for quite some time. It is no secret that we have fell in love with the what Krueger and Ross have given us over on Project Super Powers. Krueger?s exceptional handling of those Golden Age characters makes me confident that Krueger will do a fine job with the Invaders. Let?s go ahead and do this review for Avengers/Invaders #1.Creative TeamPlot: Jim Krueger & Alex RossScript: Jim KruegerArtist: Steve SadowskiArt Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: This issue is narrated by Bucky in the form of journal entries. Comic Book Review: Mighty Avengers #13: Secret Invasion
2008-05-09 17:10:00
The Revolution really enjoyed the last issue of Mighty Avengers. Bendis did a fantastic job writing Nick Fury?s character and filling the reader in on the back-story about what Nick has been doing in connection with the Skrull invasion. Mighty Avengers #13 continues to follow Nick Fury as he attempts to deal with the Skrull infiltration. It also appears that we are going to get treated to an all new version of the Howling Commandos. I have a good feeling that Mighty Avengers #13 is going to be a fine read. Let?s do this review.Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael BendisArtist: Alex MaleevArt Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with a flashback scene from six months ago. Captain America & Avengers Get Dates

Captain America & Avengers Get DatesAlso, Iron Man is a cast iron hitSource: Yahoo Marvel Studios is feeling pretty confident right about now. Iron Man is their first release since establishing themselves as a mini-studio and, well, it made bucketloads of cash over the weekend. The Robert Downey Jr starrer took an estimated $104.2 million in the US and some $201 million worldwide. That's already over its $150 million budget and makes it the tenth biggest opening of all time.Understandably, Marvel is now riding that huge wave and today announced their slate for the next three years. Least surprising was the declaration that Iron Man will fly again on April 30, 2010, exactly two years away after the first.Matthew Vaughn's Thor seems to have been rescued from the no-man's land in which it was dwelling, with a release date of June 4, 2010. Things had gone very quiet on the film, with some indications that it might never be made ? Vaughn ha...

Giant Hulk Statue Invades Theaters!
2008-05-03 16:12:00
If you went to see Iron Man this weekend, it's very likely you saw the new "life size" Hulk statue sitting in the lobby somewhere.I always admire (and critique) the in-theater marketing efforts that the studios send out, and this time this one is worth mentioning. Like The Simpsons Movie couch and Silver Surfer statue last year, this is becoming the "talk of the town," at least when it comes to marketing material. The statue is for this summer's upcoming Incredible Hulk movie. I suppose Universal thought the best way to get people to realize there was a Hulk movie was to literally put a giant Hulk statue right in the lobby of every movie theater. And I suppose it worked, but I still don't know if the movie is going do too well. In case you live beneath a rock and haven't seen this yet, some photos can be found below. Photos above are courtesy of SlashFilm. The statue actually weighs somewhere around 800 pounds. It's being referred to as life size, but in actuality I think it...

Young X-Men Prequel Being Written by Josh Schwartz Already?!
2008-05-03 16:12:00
Although all eyes are on the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine, apparently that's not the only X-Men move in the works. After X-Men 3 hit theaters a few summers ago, reports about the future of the franchise included three distinct films: Wolverine, Magneto, and a young X-Men. As of this year, I believed the only active one was Wolverine, but alas I was wrong, as far as I can tell. An interview over at BlackBook with Gossip Girl writer Josh Schwartz recently revealed that he is indeed writing the screenplay for the young X-Men prequel. And if that news isn't enough, Schwartz takes it upon himself to actually diss the upcoming Incredible Hulk and misunderstand Transformers fans all in one. While I'd like to hold out hope and say that this new X-Men movie could maybe turn out better than X-Men 3, it really doens't sound like this guy knows what he's doing. Right off the bat it sounds like we're getting a Gossip Girl version of the X-Men. The sequel will center on teenage mutant...

Comic Book Review: New Avengers #40: Secret Invasion
2008-05-02 14:27:00
The Revolution has maintained low expectations for Secret Invasion. I am not expecting anything more than a story that is the equivalent of your typical summer blockbuster movie. And so far, this approach has served me well as I have been rather entertained by this Skrull infiltration. I am definitely looking forward to New Avengers #40 since it continues the story that we got over on New Avengers: The Illuminati #1 that came out way back in December of 2006. Talk about a long wait. This should be an entertaining read. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for New Avengers #40.Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael BendisPencils: Jim CheungInks: John DellArt Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with the ending of New Avengers: The Illuminati #1 with King Dorrek of the Skrulls asking his head scientist if they got everything that they needed from the Earthlings. Comic Book Review: Mighty Avengers #12
2008-04-25 18:28:00
Mighty Avengers continues to be a much better read than New Avengers. And that trend should continue with Mighty Avengers #12. We get treated to a Nick Fury spotlight issue with Mighty Avengers #12. Comic Book Review: New Avengers #39
2008-03-31 21:25:00
It is no secret that The Revolution has been highly unimpressed with the feeble effort that Bendis has put forth on New Avengers. Each issue seems to get duller and more pointless than the last one. New Avengers #39 is a spotlight issue on Echo. Oh, lucky me. We get a spotlight issue on quite possibly the most uninteresting and boring character in the 616 universe. Outside of Bendis and Mack, I do not know of anyone who finds her character fascinating. I?ve certainly never thought Echo?s character was worthy of a roster spot on the Avengers. Oh well, I guess I?ll just have to hold my nose and dive into this review for New Avengers #39.Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael BendisArtist: David MackInks: Jeff HuetArt Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 3 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 5.5 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with Echo telling Wolverine that she doesn?t believe in this whole Skrull conspiracy theory. Comic Book Review: Mighty Avengers #10
2008-03-17 13:46:00
The Revolution was absolutely stunned and shocked that Bendis delivered such an entertaining read with the last issue of Mighty Avengers. I couldn?t believe that we got an issue that actually moved along at a quick pace, progressed a major plotline, gave us plenty of action and ended the issue with a bona fide hook ending that got me excited for the next issue. For a minute I thought maybe Bendis had gotten replaced as the writer on Mighty Avengers. I can only hope that Bendis keeps this ball rolling and delivers back to back entertaining reads on Mighty Avengers. Let?s go ahead and crank out this review for Mighty Avengers #10.Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael BendisPencils: Mark BagleyInks: Danny MikiArt Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 7.5 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with Sentry waking up in an alley completely disoriented and wondering where he is. Comic Book Review: Mighty Avengers #9
2008-02-24 19:42:00
Mighty Avengers, though not as dreadfully dull and stagnant of a read as New Avengers, still hasn?t been all that impressive. Bendis has delivered a slow and lumbering story on this title. Now that we finally have an artist on board who can keep a monthly schedule and Bendis has finally gotten past the horribly executed Venom symbiote story arc, maybe this title can finally get rolling. If anything else, Mighty Avengers #9 has the potential to deliver a fun action packed read. Let?s do this review for Mighty Avengers #9.Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael BendisPencils: Mark BagleyInks: Danny MikiArt Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with Doctor Doom finishing having what I?m sure was some phenomenal sex with the one and only Morgan Le Fey. Weekly Awards For Comic Books From February 13, 2008
2008-02-19 17:36:00
Let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:Ghost Rider #20X-Factor #28X-Force #1The Winner: X-Factor #28This week was another average week. Almost all of the comic books this week were solid reads, but none of them were anything spectacular that would separate them from the rest of the pack. I enjoyed the debut issue of X-Force. I certainly found this issue to be better than my initial expectations. I?m actually excited about the fact that X-Force might actually be able to earn a spot on The Revolution?s permanent pull list.Ghost Rider #20 was just a blast to read. It is great that Aaron has finally made this title an enjoyable read after having to suffer through Way?s dismal run. I have a positive feeling that with Aaron at the helm that we should be in store for plenty of testosterone fueled 1970?s style horror and action on this title. In the end, I had to award the Che to X-Factor #28. David continues to crank...
Comic Book Review: New Avengers Annual #2
2008-02-04 23:18:00
New Avengers is a journey down a dark and windy path that leads to nowhere particular. Bendis appears to have achieved the perfect state of stasis where he can string together numerous issues that achieve nothing. We get served up plenty of random dialogue laced with ?witty? stream of conscious banter mashed together with repetitive brawl scenes involving quite possibly the lamest Avengers villain in The Hood. Other than that, New Avengers has been a blast to read and I?m sure we will get a real gem with New Avengers Annual #2.Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael BendisPencils: Carlo PagulayanInks: Jeff HuetArt Rating: 4 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 3 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 3.5 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with Maria Hill in command of the Helicarrier. Comic Book Review: Mighty Avengers #8
2008-02-04 18:46:00
The Revolution continues to be summarily unimpressed with Bendis? Mighty Avengers. This title has been plagues by shipping issues as well as a generally slow moving story arc. Might Avengers #8 is going to be another waste of an issue since we have already gotten a complete and total re-cap of the battle between the Avengers and the Venom symbiotes back in New Avengers #36 that came out in November of 2007. Let?s go ahead and get this review over with.Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael BendisPencils: Mark BagleyInks: Danny Miki, Allen Martinez & Victor OlazabaArt Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 2 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 4 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with Henry Pym giving Janet a new growth formula so when the situation calls for it the Wasp can turn into the attack of the 50 foot woman. New Avengers Annual #2
2008-02-02 18:21:00
Ok, this series is finally going somewhere. After a couple of issues of spinning its wheels with a curtailed Hood story and a lot of monosyllabic fight scenes mixed with ridiculous parenthetical jokes, it seems like New Avengers is at last moving into Secret Invasion territory. Let's have at it.
In New Avengers, violence is okay, but profanity is not
2008-01-24 17:24:00
Comics2Film talks about the excruciating violence exhibited in New Avengers #35 against Tigra a couple months ago. Oddly enough though, the word "ass", by contrast, is censored. Hmm, I agree, that does seem very odd, and pretty hypocritical of them. Even I'd feel more confortable seeing the word "ass" among other profane words clearly displayed on the panels than to see Tigra or any other lady
Comic Book Review: Mighty Avengers #7
2008-01-14 22:19:00
Mighty Avengers has been hurt by the delays caused by Frank Cho?s inability to meet a monthly shipping schedule. So, Mighty Avengers #7 sports a guest artist in Mark Bagley. We are also going to finally get the beginning of the Venom symbiotes story arc that has already been concluded over in New Avengers. Yeah, nothing like getting the beginning of a story arc a couple of months after we have read the conclusion. At any rate, I just don?t have high hopes for Mighty Avengers until Bendis can catch this title up with New Avengers. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Mighty Avengers #7.Creative TeamWriter: Brain Michael BendisPencils: Mark BagleyInks: Danny Miki, Allen Martinez & Victor OlazabaArt Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10Story Rating: 3 Night Girls out of 10Overall Rating: 4.5 Night Girls out of 10Synopsis: We begin with Spider-Woman sneaking into the medical bay of the Avengers Tower where Tony is recuperating. New Avengers: Illuminati #5

The capper of the Illuminati title is just as good as the previous issues. Only two problems: Secret Invasion, which this leads into, is months away, isn't it? And what's with the five pages of filler included in every comic marvel shipped this week? Seriously, it didn't do anything for me. I would have been ok with five pages of ads, guys. Give me a backup story, or nothing. Don't half-ass it, Marvel.

New Avengers #35
2007-10-10 02:59:00
Don't believe the naysayers. Bendis is back in action, and although he isn't juggling the subplots very well (i.e. this issue has nothing to do with the big reveal at the conclusion of last issue, except for maybe a page at the end), this is back into acceptably snarky territory. I think the Hood makes a great godfather of crime, and I wish him the best of luck in making trouble for the various Avenger teams he'll have to contend with.
The Avengers' Last Stand Against Ultron?
2007-10-02 18:48:00
I've always been a closet Avengers fan. I don't know what it is about them, but they seem to be one of the few supers teams that escaped the whole "dark Marvel" routine that swept through Comicdom back in the 1990s. They have always remained true to their superhero roots - but that's not to say they're Boy Scouts or anything, just that they never sank to the realm of vigilantism and have always remained larger-than-life supers. The interior work on this one looks pretty damned good, too! This is an official Marvel press release:Nuclear missiles have been launched, Iron Man is nowhere to be seen and the Sentry is mourning the loss of his wife. Oh yeah, Ultron’s back and it’s taken the form of Janet Pym so it can wreak havoc on the world! In Mighty Avengers #5, from the red-hot superstar creative team of writer Brian Bendis and artist Frank Cho, it’s the penultimate chapter of the team’s first mission…but is there any way to defeat a foe who just won’t stay down? Are...

Explosion kills 29 petrol scavengers in Iraq
2006-08-30 01:54:02
NEAR DIWANIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - At least 29 people were killed when a blast ripped through scavengers siphoning petrol from pools around a breach in a disused pipeline in central Iraq late on Monday, health officials said. A Reuters reporter at the rural site near Diwaniya, 180 km (110 miles) south of Baghdad, saw 15 charred and mutilated bodies, including that of a boy. The explosion wounded 26 people, who were taken to area hospitals with severe burns. “Some of the wounded have burns in 75 percent of their bodies,” Hamid Jaafi, a health official in Diwaniya told Reuters, adding the death toll is expected to climb. Witnesses said the blast, which is under investigation, occurred at 11 p.m. (1900 GMT), while a group of impoverished people were scooping fuel from two large pools. Despite having the world’s third largest proven reserves of oil, Iraq is gripped by a fuel crisis blamed on sabotage attacks, aging infrastructure and rampart corruption. Full Story Here: M...
