Babe Ruth?s Pro Wrestling Involvement
2009-03-15 05:14:00
Babe Ruth’s Pro Wrestling Involvement I’ve always heard rumors about Babe Ruth’s involvement with professional wrestling, whether it be during his career in the off-season or after his playing days. Yet I’d never seen any proof to support this. That’s until I came across this little scan from the New York Times. I’m not sure if this ...

Chattanooga woman strikes out Babe Ruth
2008-04-02 14:30:00
On April 2, 1931, world famous New York Yankees sluggers Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were struck out by a 17 year old female pitcher named Virnett 'Jackie' Mitchell in Chattanooga, TN. "I don't know what's going to happen if they begin to let women in baseball," grumbled Ruth off-field. "Of course, they will never make good. Why? Because they are too delicate. It would kill them to play ball every day."Joe Engel, owner of the Southern Association's AA Chattanooga Lookouts, had recently signed Mitchell after spotting her in a baseball camp in Georgia. Engel, a former big league player who scouted for the Washington Senators after his playing days, was known for his innovative, entertaining, and often zany promotional stunts. The local papers were full of stories about the first woman to ever play in the minor leagues, though Jackie Mitchell was actually the second woman to sign a minor-league contract. In 1898, Lizzie Arlington played one game, pitching for Reading (PA) against Al...
Rogues, scandals and the Church of Baseball: S&R honors Babe Ruth
2008-03-31 19:30:00
Walt Whitman once said, “I see great things in baseball. It’s our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us.” You could look it up. - Annie Savoy I’ll promise to go easier on drinking and to get to bed earlier, but not for you, fifty thousand dollars, or two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars will I give up women. They’re too much fun. - Babe Ruth Today is Opening Day for America’s Pastime, and to mark the occasion S&R honors our newest Scrogue, George Herman Ruth. The Bambino. The Sultan of Swat. The Babe. What Ruth lacked as a scholar he more than made up for in roguishness, and his appointment to our masthead comes at a time when our game is facing its own set of troubles. The Mitchell Report is a desperately flawed effort, but BALCO, the Federal pursuit of Barry Bonds, admissions of cheating by Andy Pettite and others, the now-discredited denial of cheating by Rafael Palmeiro, the strange case of Mike McGw...
Christened in 1923 by Babe Ruth?s homer, Yankee Stadium prepares for final
2008-03-28 18:28:00
Barry Bonds stepped out of a white stretch limousine, strolled into Yankee Stadium for the first time and basically pooh-poohed the place. Pretty much just another ballpark, he told most anyone who would listen. That is, until he walked onto the field and took a look around. That’s when the history hit him. Read the full ...
Barry Bonds 762, Hank Aaron 755, Babe Ruth 714, Cruise-Goebbels 759
2008-01-21 15:15:00
Coming dangerously close to beating Barry Bonds current record of 762 lifetime home runs, Tom Cruise was compared to Joseph Goebbels for the 759th time in Germany over the weekend. ?The heat is definitely on now,? said a spokesman for the German Protestant (as in Lutheran) church. ?We?ve compared Scientologist Cruise to Goebbels so many times that we ...
Babe Ruth Did It Without Penicillin (Sept 5, 2007)

Babe Ruth Did It Without Penicillin a rant-like substance offered forth by Manny Stiles Where has all the Bonds-flavored Haterade gone? Just weeks ago there were cases of it everywhere, now all I see is discarded bags of McDonaghy?s Double Vickburgers half-eaten and the rest half-regurgitated
Don't Confuse Him With Babe Ruth
2007-08-09 23:12:00
Rick Ankiel, whose wildness ended his major league pitching career several years ago, has made it back to the majors, this time as an outfielder. The 28 year old Ankiel had 32 home runs at AAA Memphis when the parent Cardinals called him up today. Congratulations, Rick! Kudos to the Cardinals for sticking with Ankiel while he converted to the outfield and worked his way back up through the minors. They were under no contractual obligation to hang on to him this long.

755: Playing the Game of What If [J. Mark English]
2007-08-03 02:52:00
WHAT IF Babe Ruth had not pitched in his first six seasons of his career. Between 1914 and 1919, Ruth averaged 185 at bats per season. In those seasons he averaged just over 8 home runs a season. Then from 1920 (the year after being traded to the Yankees) through 1934, he averaged well over 400 at bats per season. He didn't get that high a number of at bats in the first six season since he was busy being a dominant left handed pitcher. But suppose he had played the outfield instead of pitching, and had hit for his average home run total between 1920-1934. What might his grand total of HR's at the end of his career looked like instead of the famed 714 number? He averaged about 44 home runs a season between 1920 and 1934. Take that number and multiply it by six, and you get 264 home runs (six coming from his seasons as a pitcher). Then take his career total of 714 HR's and subtract his original 49 HR's from his career in Boston and you get 665. Now add 665 to the assumed...
"Ruthian" is a Pseudo-Adjective for a Reason
2007-07-31 21:11:00
Dave Perkins of the Toronto Star has an interesting opinion on the relative merits of some legendary sluggers:Bonds, who comes across as an unpleasant individual both near (in limited dealings) and far, has built up no...deposits of goodwill. His story is one of statistical accomplishment only and that Everest of numbers contains the great unknowable element ? how many of them are legit and how many are not?So it's difficult to view the numerical ladder as the absolute indicator of historical ranking. To me, the greatest home run hitters of them all are Ruth and Josh Gibson, in either order.Because we don't know how many of Bonds' homers were steroid-assisted, you're prepared to abandon statistics altogether? You're just going to flip a coin, come up with either Babe Ruth and Josh Gibson, and call it a day? Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs in the major leagues. Josh Gibson, according to his Hall of Fame placque, hit "almost 800" in the Negro Leagues. Why isn't the number more preci...
More Morrissey Madness
2007-07-20 23:05:00
You may have thought Chicago Tribune columnist Rick Morrissey was gone, but even so, he was never forgotten. Turns out he wasn't gone, either. In fact, Rick is making his triumphant return to the BTL stage right now, with an article which demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of segregation's effect on competitive balance in baseball: The Rev. Jesse Jackson had some interesting thoughts the other day about Barry Bonds' pursuit of baseball's all-time home-run record, but one statement stood out. Talking about the cloud of steroid allegations hanging over Bonds, Jackson said that if Major League Baseball is going to start putting asterisks in its record book, a lot of players should have asterisks by their names. And what was the good Reverend's rationale?"My question is if 400 guys tested positive, do you put asterisks by all their names?" Jackson told the Sun-Times. "Do you put asterisks by [spitballer] Gaylord Perry's name? Do you put asterisks by guys who had the ulti...
The Heroic Anti-Hero?
2007-07-20 18:05:00
Bad sportswriters habitually concoct shocking, counterintuitive topics for their columns, hoping that the very idiocy of their ideas will attract readers who want to verify for themselves whether or not said authors could really be that stupid--a reaction somewhat akin to rubber-necking a gruesome car crash. The fact that these guys keep their jobs year after year leads me to believe that the tactic does attract readers; I, for one, am drawn inexorably to these columns, though that could just be because I write for a blog devoted to them. On second thought, it's far more likely that I write for this blog because I'm so drawn to them. But although these columns may increase the audience and fame of their authors, the inescapable fact remains that they're still utterly ludicrous. To illustrate this phenomenon, I present you withe the latest from Philadelphia Daily News' Sam Donnellon. Here's the headline:Thanks, Barry, for Being Baseball's SaviorSam Donnellon said what? Oh, I ha...
Damn Yankees: Have Heart Mets [J. Mark English]
2007-06-16 01:30:00
Its tired, same old story. The Yankees are once again rolling along towards another October season filled with fun and bliss. And they do it at the expense of other teams dreams. Is been the same story going back to 1918 when some guy named Babe Ruth became a Yankee, just to finance a Broadway show. Interestingly enough, forty years later it was a Broadway play that captured the frustrations and hopes of ABY (Anybody But the Yankees) fans across the country.Who can forget the great show, Damn Yankees? About a die hard fan who sells his soul to play for the Washington Senators and snatch the pennant away from the Yankees. The hit song from the show was the number called Heart. The New York Mets should take note of this song, and take heart going into the Subway Series. Without further adieu, here is the classic, Heart:http://img68.imageshack.u-s/my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5-wj.gif
Oh, Snap! Babe Ruth Said What About Bonds?

Babe Ruth has something to say about Barry Bonds and this whole steroids business. Ruth never was one to hold back, and he fires away, back from the grave.

Albert Pujols = Modern Day Babe Ruth
2006-09-05 07:45:01
Albert Pujols hit three home runs yesterday against the Pittsburgh Pirates in St. Louis.  Pujols is a baseball freak so this may come as no major surprise. The part that is Ruthian is that Albert is the father of a girl with Down Syndrome and  yesterday was “buddy walk” day at the stadium. A few of the kids had a simple request for Albert. “Buddy walk” is a day the Cardinals have every year where kids with Down Syndrome can circle the field with the players and stand with them during pre-game introductions. Several of the kids during warmups asked Albert to hit a homer for them. Albert went out and hit home runs in his first three plate appearances. Children with Down Syndrome circled the field in pregame ceremonies and then stood with players at their positions during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” More than a few asked him to hit a home run for them. In his fourth trip to the plate Albert hit a long, deep fly ball that was caught on the warning tra...
