Back in the Day

Back in the day, Feast of Fun was known as Feast of Fools and it was a cabaret show that we put on at various places around town. One of our favorite spots was Ha Mien, a Vietnamese restaurant. The owner of Ha Mien gave us our secondary name when we asked him to translate our show title into Vietnamese. He paused for a second after we described what Feast of Fools meant to us and he thoughtfully said "Gay Fun Show." We loved it right away. If you have ever seen the Vietnamese posters up on Argyle street, you can see how they influenced the design for our posters....

This week, I've been going through some old video tapes and found this news report. Back in September 2004, I was asked to take part in a news conference to educate the community about the medical liability crisis in this part of the state. This meeting was put together by our three local county medical societies. We also wanted to get the word out on the state supreme court candidates our groups were supporting during that election cycle. The cool thing for me was that there were about 3-4 other panelists, but who got the sound bytes on the news? Cool, huh.

Back in the Day
2008-08-15 18:29:00
A long, long time ago at a restaurant not-so-far-away, my friends and I spent many a night hanging out and talking. The restaurant was the Perkins at routes 22 and 191 and the friends were usually my best friend Tommy and various other cronies ranging from my husband (who was just my friend then), to Scott, Mark, Tony and occasionally, my other best friend, Marie. This was after high-school but just before I was married - two of the most fun years of my life. We'd head there after a long night of doing nothing and sit at the large horseshoe-shaped booth in the back. We'd talk about everything, smoke too many cigarettes, drink too much coffee, and wait for our favorite waiter to show. Jack was the waiter who bent over backward for us and dealt with our messes, odd orders and general silliness. I was told that Jack has since passed, but I'm not sure that's true - so we'll just pretend that Jack is still somewhere out there making someone's life pleasant while they dine.Jack was t...

The American Gladiators, A Great Back In the Day Series Updated; However, N
2008-01-07 18:12:00
I was at home in bad last night and Sunday was actually a pretty good TV night, and this is from a guy who usually never watches it with the exception of SportsCenter and a few select shows.I decided to catch the premiere of American Gladiators on NBC; however, I only watched the second hour (sorry, I had to catch the HBO series, "The Wire", at 9).Well, the American Gladiators was a show I often watched growing up and sometimes I do catch it on ESPN Classic. The old version featured pumped up men and women playing some physical games, and sometimes overacting to sell the competition, but it was cool and a concept well ahead of it's time. As well, the show had a "campiness" to it, that is if you compare to today's world -- the world was different, the hair was different, you saw the red, white and blue, and the gladiators you knew little about them aside from the fact they could kick your arse.Ah, I remember the pumped up muscle men and women in shiny spandex who took on average, e...

This is a sick photo of Bubba airing out Larocco's Leap on his KX-125. Not many guys can say they've hucked the leap on a 125. Even guys today dont do it on their 250F's. This just goes to show how much talent Stewart had, and what a freak he was in his 125 days. But oddly enough, I remember 2 years ago when Bubba was still on a 250 2-stroke and he was one of the only 250 riders not jumping it. Even his teammate at the time, Michael Byrne, was jumping it on the exact same bike. Maybe Bubba's horoscope told him not to or something. Who knows.

While using the elliptical machine at the gym this afternoon, I was glued to ESPN Classic which was showing Game 2 of the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals between the arch rivals, Knicks and Bulls. Watching it brought me back to my adolescence when the Knicks, who were competitive then, found themselves year after year in a heated, excited contest against Michael Jordan and the indomitable Bulls. Those sure were exciting years of playoff basketball for Knicks fans. The Garden was rocking then. The voice of Marv Albert was synonymous with Knick playoff basketball. Names like Mason, Ewing, Oakley, Starks, Anthony, Paxon, Williams, Armstrong, Cartwright reentered my consciousness once again. True, we (the Knicks) never did make it pass the Bulls while Jordan led the team. They stopped us every time, but the fierce competition and energy were thrilling and memorable. It was almost as exciting to watch the rerun this afternoon as it was 14 years ago.

"Back in the Days When it Meant Something"
2007-04-04 10:47:00
A comment ("...back in the days when it meant something to him...") left by the reader 'Wazza' on my first blog entry has got me thinking. It was in reference to Robbie Williams and seemed to suggest that Williams' heart is no longer in his music, that somehow he'd lost his muse. Williams' rise was certainly a dramatic one - from making it massive by proving his old mates wrong, by having 250,000 people chant his name.Maybe nowWilliams is suffering from the Rules of being a Celebrity in the Modern Age that dictate that he cannot stay on a pedestal that high. He has to fall. Maybe that fall has everything to do with his manic depressivenaturebut,personal-ly, Williams has, in recent years, become a much more interesting artist (though bothWilliams' record company and would probably disagree based on the quite dismal performance of his 2006 release, Rudebox). It seems to me that the music now means more to Williams than his audience. "...back in the days when it meant somet...

My Take on Back in the Day with Dale Jr. On DVD
2006-12-19 22:15:01
This hit show Back in the Day with Dale Jr features the only racing show in the 1960's and 1970's that covered NASCAR racing before the major networks did with a 30 minute in-dept show called Car and Track with Bud Lindemann, the combination of Car and Driver and the added commentary and prospective of one NASCAR's Most Popular Drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. with some interest facts thrown in made the show interesting to watch. As a huge NASCAR fan since the early 1990's, I had offen wondered what NASCAR Grand National racing back in the 60's and 70's was really like when Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, David Pearson and more battling it out for the victory in races such as the World 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway to the 1973 Daytona 500 to name a few. Back in the Day with Dale Jr. is the modern version of a classic television show. The DVD itself, its good, having all of the 13 episodes on DVD with no commercials is perfect, that's really why you buy TV on DVD anyway and throw that...
