MozyHome Opens the Door for Online Mac Backups
2008-05-02 13:34:00 According to Tech News World, it looks like someone has beaten Apple to the punch in developing an internet based system backup. While Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) Time Machine and Time Capsule present a made-for-Mac backup solution designed and built by the company itself, it lacks one critical feature -- offsite backups. If a home is robbed, flooded or, worse yet, burned, some of a computer's most precious data can be lost with it. While the family budget is important enough, the real gold is family photos and movies that can never be recreated. EMC's (NYSE: EMC) Mozy, however, has launched a new online backup solution, MozyHome for Mac, that can protect a customer's most valuable data. The company's Mac version has been available as a beta for nine months, where it's attracted 43,000 beta users. The official release now joins versions for Windows 2000, XP and Vista. However, Mozy's implementation of MozyHome for Mac isn't just a retrofitted Windows application. Built for ...

A word about backups
2008-04-21 22:55:00 Imagine this: you turn on your computer, and it doesn’t start. It freezes, you get the dreaded BSOD, it goes in a reboot loop, or who knows what else. Computer Forensics, Backups and Litigation
2008-03-14 13:00:00 One of my favorite "I forgot to backup" stories. I get a call about 1:00 pm. The customer on the phone is telling me their server computer is down. We tried to reboot it a few time with no results. The customer stated that they had to get payroll completed tomorrow because it was Thursday and if they could not get the payroll out the workers would do bad things to them. I drove for three hours, picked up the server took it to the distributer of the system which was three more hours of driving. BTW the customer told as I am leaving with server that they needed to backup the computer because they had not done so in a month. So if I could handle that for them. What? My major concern with a down hard drive is to get the data off and load on another harddrive and getting the customer back up and running. If the harddrive would not come up or files might have got deleted then would have to figure out how to get the data off. Allot of network professional use compan...

Use dvdisaster to protect backups on optical media
2008-02-07 14:07:00 Storing backups on optical media such as DVD-R discs suffers from two major drawbacks: DVD discs are easy to scratch, and the media itself degrades after a while. You can deal with the scratching issue by careful handing of the media, but even expensive media becomes unreadable over time. Dvdisaster aims to help you recover the information off scratched and aged media.

Dynamic Backups
2008-01-16 16:45:00 In the production environment, it is very difficult to find time to stop the operations while the databases are backed up. This results in irregular backups and makes the system vulnerable to loss of data. To overcome this problem, SQL Server provides the option of dynamic backups.Dynamic backups allow the databases to be backed up while the database is active. Though the performance of the system becomes slow, it encourages frequent backups. A well-planned backup schedule can minimize the inconvenience caused to the users.

Monitoring your Photo Backups!
2007-12-31 23:00:00 How do you know that your backups contain what you think they contain? How can you discover if you've accidentally deleted a file that you didn't mean to delete? Some very good questions that arrived in my Inbox from Greg Wellman. He writes:Do you use any type of folder/directory monitor to watch your Mozy-mirrored files for changes? My one big worry with Mozy is that if one of my kids accidentally deletes something (and I don't catch it within 30 days), that file is gone forever. Or, if I should get some sort of virus, file corruption could get mirrored to Mozy. So, I've been looking for some little background utility to watch the same folders I have mirrored to Mozy and tell me via email when something changes in those folders. I think this is a great question & Greg brings up an important point - your backups are no good if you are also backing up your mistakes or missing them until after it's too late. I replied with a couple of my own thoughts:I don't have any kid...

Why Online Backups Are The Only Choice For Many Businesses
2007-12-09 16:01:00 Online backup is a process of taking routine backups of data and files from your computers or servers and it is generally taken at least once every week and ideally every day. This is one of the preferred data protection measures and nowadays all business organisations regularly take online backups of important data and documents.Taking regular online backups of your essential documents and data is now very easy and initially your service providers may provide a free trial for a fixed duration. To begin your service, you simply download the online backup software and the software does the rest of the job.The program collects the various files, compresses and encrypts the files and then sends these encrypted files to the remote server of the service provider. No one, even the employees of the backup company, has access to these files and the files decrypt only when they are received back on the originating computer or server. Thus, this ensures not only the safety of the data but als...

Online Backups, Are You Being Smart?
2007-12-09 15:59:00 Data loss is one of the major problems especially in big business houses where a large number of data has to be dealt with and in all the circumstances the data loss can be minimized by using secure online backups. Although there are many conventional backup systems such as CD, DVD, and floppy that can be used for storing small amount of data, however for storing large amount of data secure online backup seems to be the right option.Nowadays many commercial secure online backup providers are easily available and after paying a nominal fee, you can store your data at a remote location. These commercial online backup stores ask you to download their backup software and the software manages the backup and does the rest of job. A few commercial backup stores charge anywhere between 20 cents to 3 dollar per month for storing 1 GB of data, however there are some online backup stores who offer the online backup free for a limited period.Actually you should ensure that the commercial online...

SQL Server Express Automated Backups
2007-12-06 21:10:00 I recently set up a web application using SQL Server Express for a client, and it was the first time I had done any "production" level work using the Express edition. As such, this was the first time I ever needed to configure automated backups for a SQL Express database. However, there is no built-in way to schedule backups without using manual scripts or external applications. I briefly toyed with writing something myself to get the job done, but of course we should not reinvent the wheel so I turned to Google to find out what's out there for options. After much searching, here's the solution I went with: Jasper Smith (no relation!) has written an extremely useful and powerful stored procedure called expressmaint that handles backups, generates reports, performs validation, removes old files, and has many other options and features. It's very complete and very easy to use. In addition to the stored procedure, he provides an expressmaint application that does the same thi...

The Need For Remote Backups
2007-12-02 07:00:00 Remote backups, as the name suggests, are backups taken remotely. These backups are taken without interfering with the server, the data of which is being backed up. Remote backups are relatively new but are catching up quite rapidly as compared to other forms of backup.Remote backups are exactly similar to online backups. Online backups involve copying the data while it is being saved on the server and simultaneously saving it to some offsite location. Online backups are also known as real time backups as they involve backing up the data in ?real time' that is almost simultaneously to the entry of the data. In the same way, remote backups involve taking a backup of the data to be backed up in real time. Real time backups involve backing up the data as and when it is entered into the system. However remote backup and online backup should not be construed to mean the same thing. Remote backups are a part of online backups. Remote backups are a type of online backups, which are normal...

Backups illegal as Germany bans all duplication of media
2007-09-21 17:19:00 Who knew that the world would enter into a police state through our movies and music. Germany took that step today with a law that will be enacted in 2008. The upper house of parliament approved a new copyright law that makes it illegal for copy music and videos even for individuals. Under the new law storing these backups without prior permission is illegal. Furthermore, making digital copies of IPTV and TV broadcasts are also illegal. I'm not sure how this would work with iPods filled with non-iTunes purchased music. God forbid you should copy your music, then backup your backup onto a firewire! Some consumer groups and the German Green Party have fought against these new measures to no avail. German federal justice minister Brigitte Zypries stated that the newly passed legislation brought German law in line with European Union codes. That all makes sense as it is the EU who is demanding over half a billion dollars from Microsoft because they've gotten rich off of capitalis...
