Mother Spreads Bacteria, Viruses to Her Baby
2008-03-12 09:08:00 Bacteria and virus can be disseminated by mother to the baby when giving birth to the baby and in the first week of his/her life. Although many of it does not threaten baby’s health, there are some that could cause serious problems including involving death. When in the womb, baby grows in 'sterilized' environment, but as the amniotic membrane crack, microbe starts to enter the environment. It then exposes the baby to bacteria and viruses for the first time.As the baby comes out from womb and enters the birth canal, baby now been encased by organisms that stay in the mother’s vagina or skin. This includes bacteria that cause venereal disease.Body fluids including blood that protect the baby expose them to infection like HIV or hepatitis B and C.Baby bowel route then will be 'colonized' as he is birth. In a few days, bacteria as E-coli, enterococcus and bifidobacterium emerge in his excrement. This state is important because it helps in stimulating the development of the baby...

DRUG-RESISTANT E. COLI AND KLEBSIELLA BACTERIA
2008-02-10 12:35:00 A research team from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, examining bacterial isolates obtained in hospital and non-hospital clinical settings between 2000 and 2006, has identified drug-resistant strains of E. coli and Klebsiella bacteria in more than 50 blood, urine and respiratory samples. These resistant strains, which resemble bacteria reported in Latin America, Asia and Europe, were thought to be rare in the U.S.This is the first report of this phenomenon in the United States, the researchers said. The resistant strains produce “extended-spectrum beta-lactamases” (ESBLs), enzymes that destroy penicillin or cephalosporin class drugs, thereby conferring resistance to those drugs, said James Jorgensen, Ph.D., professor of pathology, medicine, microbiology and clinical laboratory sciences at the Health Science Center. The strains are typically resistant to other commonly used antibiotic drug classes, as well.“These very common bacteria, when they produ...

Double Dipping Bacteria
2008-02-04 21:41:00 Clemson University professor, Paul L. Dawson, was intrigued by the "Seinfeld" episode in which George Costanza explodes into a diatribe about double dipping. So, he conducted a study where volunteers double dipped into various dips.In my opinion the results were amazing. By double dipping, over 10,000 bacteria were introduced into the dip. I've never been a fan of double dipping, but if I am sharing something with my wife or other close family, it doesn't bother me as much. But be warned germophobes! Bacteria could be lingering in the dip at the next party you attend!

Energy from Bacteria
2008-02-03 16:00:00 Energy from bacteria…is this possible? Well, this is possible according to Thomas Wood, a professor of chemical engineering in Texas A&M University with his novel technique of converting E-Coli bacteria in to energy factories which produce hydrogen as energy.Prof. Wood, a researcher at Texas A&M University has devised a new biotechnological technique to increase the production of hydrogen by E-Coli bacteria by altering its natural hydrogen producing process. This alternation is primarily done by selectively deleting six specific genes in E-Coli’s DNA which in turn, as a result, produces 140 times more hydrogen than is created via the natural process, along with a supply of sugar to utilize.Hydrogen is considered as a valuable component in fuel-cell technology. Therefore massive scale production of hydrogen is extremely important. Currently a process termed as “cracking water” does this task. But the current method has major drawbacks such as high cost of money and hi...
Your snack dip is teeming with 10,000 bacteria!
2008-02-01 12:51:00 Think twice before double-dipping your snacks the next time, for a new study has found that the popular party practice is actually a major health hazard. Us researchers were inspired to investigate the practice after watching an episode of hit comedy show Seinfeld. In the show, character George Costanza is rounded on at a funeral reception after dipping the same chip twice. Clemson University food microbiologist Paul Dawson, along with his team of nine students, made participants to bite a wheat cracker and dip the cracker for three seconds into a tablespoon of dip. The research team asked the volunteers to repeat the process with new crackers, for a total of either three or six double dips per dip sample. The researchers then analysed the remaining dip and counted the number of aerobic bacteria in it. Results showed that on average, three to six double dips transferred about 10,000 bacteria from the eater's mouth to the remaining dip. &n...

Light could trap and release bacteria
2008-01-25 11:50:00 Sensors that use light to trap, analyse and then release tiny objects such as bacteria or DNA are one step closer thanks to new computer simulations done by researchers in the US. The team modelled the optofluidic interactions that occur when a liquid flows through a tiny channel next to an optical waveguide. The work could lead to new “lab-on-a-chip” sensors that could be used in a wide range of areas including medicine and security. In such optofluidics sensors, the tiny objects of interest would be mixed with a fluid that would flow through tiny channels next to solid waveguides. When light is passed through the waveguides, it would create a short-range evanescent electric field in the channel that would trap tiny particles. While being held the objects could be studied using analytical probes, before being released. However, it has proved very difficult to predict exactly how objects will behave in practical optofluidic systems. Now, researchers at Cornell University have d...

‘Friendly’ bacteria may help in reducing fat absorption
2008-01-21 12:16:00 A new study in mice has revealed that adding ‘friendly’ bacteria to the diet might one day help in reducing fat absorption. For the study, Jeremy Nicholson and his colleagues from Imperial College London, used mice. They fed strains of ‘probiotic’ Lactobacillus to mice whose gut microbes had been replaced by those that usually live in the human gut. They had different bile acids from the norm, favouring enzymes that reduce the amount of fat digested. "More fat is available for the microbes, and you then 'poo' the microbes out," New Scientist quoted Nicholson, as saying. The researchers said that the changes may only reduce fat absorption by a little, but this could have an impact on obesity if sustained over several years. (ANI)

Kosher Highlights: Jewish Cowboys, Glowing Bacteria, And Israeli Doctors Re

I am not sure whether or not the doctors will consider moving (as many already make a fortune where they live) although their support would be very much appreciated in the holy land.Speaking of doctors, it looks like Israeli doctors were able to save a mans...

Making bacteria work to produce biofuels
2008-01-20 03:46:00 The latest innovative method to produce biofuels (at least that we know about) has arrived with bacteria. A group of UCLA scientists have manipulated a set of Eschericha coli bacteria with genetic engineering so it produces isobutanol from glucose. The technique manipulates the E. Coli's metabolic mechanisms to increase its 2-Keto Acid production levels. This component is key to synthesize isobutanol. UCLA's Shota Atsumi, Taizo Hanai and James C. Liao state, "Compared to traditional biofuels such as ethanol, complex alcohols such as butanol or isobutanol offer serious advantages as gasoline substitutes, because of their high energy content and low humidity absorption levels." Natural microorganisms can, indeed, produce amounts of complex alcohols. Using the genetic engineering techniques, researchers got bacteria producing them, but it wasn't a simple or cheap method to develop. Besides the E. Coli, the team expects to work with less harmful bacteria, such as Saccharomyces cerev...
Israel: Test Thy Water Using Glowing Bacteria?
2008-01-18 05:56:00 (Image Credit: CheckLight) Water, water everywhere, but is it safe to drink? That is the question citizens often ask their respective governments, especially if their is a water contamination crisis. Unfortunately it seems that in order to verify if the H2O is "good to go," one must spend some serious money, not to mention the lag time waiting for the lab results to come in.Fortunately it seems one Israeli company called CheckLight is setting out to change all of this by using some of the tiniest creatures to warn us whether or not the water from our facets is safe to drink.(Israel 21st Century) Luminescent bacteria glow at night on the beaches in Costa Rica and the Mediterranean Sea. Cell-to-Cell Communication in Bacteria
2007-12-22 23:00:00 The research in my laboratory focuses on the molecular mechanisms that bacteria use for intercellular communication. Our goal is to understand how bacteria detect multiple environmental cues, and how the integration and processing of this information results in the precise regulation of gene expression. The bacterial communication phenomenon that we study is called quorum sensing, which is a process that allows bacteria to communicate using secreted chemical signaling molecules called autoinducers. This process enables a population of bacteria to collectively regulate gene expression and, therefore, behavior. In quorum sensing, bacteria assess their population density by detecting the concentration of a particular autoinducer, which is correlated with cell density. This ?census-taking? enables the group to express specific genes only at particular population densities. Quorum sensing is widespread; it occurs in numerous Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In general, processes ...
