Sunday Afternoon Badminton
2008-05-12 03:54:00
It's me again. JP is a bit busy these days, so he hasn't had the time to write up a post. Anyways, now that I'm off school and working, I have a bit more time on my hands so I'm going to start playing regularly again. Today I went with JP to play with some of his badminton buddies like I did for the past couple of Sundays. There were only four of us today because two of the guys who regularly show up had some other commitments. We spent most of our time playing games, but with a little bit of practice in between. We played five complete games in total. I was on the losing end for the first four because JP was on the other team, and the other two guys with us were about equal, so obviously the team that had JP had the advantage. Most of the games were fairly close however, so it wasn't too bad. I won my fifth game because I was teamed with JP. We were in the course of playing a rematch but one of my opponents hurt his back trying to deal with my drop-then-clear co...

Asian Badminton Championship Post Mortem & Thomas Cup Analysis
2008-04-21 06:20:00
Malaysia failed to win any titles at the just concluded Asian Badminton Championships, with both our top tier men and women players bowing out unexpectedly. Our men, Lee Chong Wei, Kien Keat and Boon Heong, and Tan Fook and Wan Wah failed to reach the finals, while Wong Mew Choo bowed out early too. While some may brand the Asian Badminton Championship as a total disaster of an outing for Malaysia, there were several pleasing performances, especially from our second tier players. Wong Choong Hann and Hafiz Hashim managed to scalp Chen Yu and Bao Chunlai, a welcoming improvement in the depth of our Men's Singles, which before this, was experiencing a crisis. This certainly takes some pressure of Lee Chong Wei to perform, knowing that he has several notable players to back him up. Kien Keat and Boon Heong on the other hand, according to my calculations, which will officially take over as Malaysia's top Men's Doubles pair at the Thomas Cup, put up a commendable fight against Lee and ...
Asian Badminton Championships - Finals Predictions
2008-04-20 05:26:00
Candra Wijaya/Nova Widianto vs. Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong DaeI have not seen Candra and Nova playing together yet, and I look forward to seeing them play. However, I have been extremely impressed with the way Candra and Nova have been creating upset after upset. Now, they face the overwhelming favorites and All England Champions Jung and Lee. Jung and Lee were impressive yesterday, but the question is that whether they can continue their scintillating performance. Hard to predict the winner.Chen Jin vs. Park Sung HwanMission accomplished by team China, after yesterday's acting by Lin Dan and Chen Jin. They should go for the Academy Awards. Seriously, the BWF should look into all these match fixing - if this were to happen in tennis, you would be sure that they would be suspended. However, in predicting this match, I think Park holds the upper hand, as I am extremely impressed by his dismissal of Sony Dwi Kuncoro in a titanic 70 minute match yesterday. Chen, after his 'convincing' wi...
Asian Badminton Championships - Semifinals Predictions
2008-04-19 04:51:00
After the near-total annihilation yesterday, the only Malaysian survivors Koo and Tan hope to keep our flag flying.Wang Chen vs. Jiang YanjiaoJiang is a recovering player slowly making back lost ground while Wang Chen has always been 'up there'. Both of them disposed of lesser known Japanese opponents yesterday, and have not really been tested this whole tournament. I believe Jiang will eventually prevail in a very very tight match, that would probably go to 3 games.Chen Jin vs. Lin DanChen Jin will win in two sets. You would be stupid to bet against that. Why? Ask Li Yongbo.Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong vs. Jung Jae Sung/Lee Yong DaeThe former All England Champions take on the reigning All England Champions. Koo and Tan finally got their revenge against Fairuz and Zakry yesterday, while Jung and Lee come in as the second seeds and favorites after the defeat of Choong and Lee yesterday. I believe Koo and Tan are a rejuvenated and reformed team, and will beat the World Championship ...

Asian Badminton Championships - Day 3 Analysis
2008-04-18 03:17:00
Yesterday has been a extremely good day for Malaysia, except for a minor hiccup. But lets focus on the good things:Hafiz Hashim managed to beat World Number 3 Bao Chunlai in 3 sets. This is extremely significant because 1. he is in the quarterfinals, a first in a long long long long time 2. he beat Bao 3. he won in 3 sets. Hafiz Hashim's usual weakness is his stamina, lack of confidence and lack of focus. However, he has managed to overcome all of these weaknesses to gain a timely confidence boost ahead of the Thomas Cup. This certainly spells good things for the Malaysian contingent. Hafiz faces Sony Dwi Kuncoro today, and while I agree that Sony is a formidable opponent, I think Hafiz, having overcome all his weaknesses, would be able to - seize the day.Wong Choong Hann was impressive in his dismissal of the slumping Chen Yu. I have nothing against Chen Yu, but I think he, together with Chen Hong, will be slowing fading into the scenes. Choong Hann was extremely impressive, espe...
Asian Badminton Championships Quarterfinals Predictions
2008-04-18 02:53:00
Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir vs. Xie Zhongbo/Zhang YawenWith an Olympic berth at stake, Xie and Zhang will be going all out to try to defeat the World Number 1s. However, Nova and Lilyana are no easy meat to be pushed aside. If this were a normal matchup, I would certainly say that the Indonesians have the upper hand. However, Nova has been playing in Men's Doubles too, and we all know he is not young in badminton age. Being the glue that holds the partnership together, I worry for his stamina. Xie/Zhang in 3 games, or Nova/Lilyana in 2.Wang Lin vs. Wong Mew ChooMew Choo has not really met any tough opponents, neither has Wang Lin. However, both appear to be unconvincing. The question is: Will Mew Choo want to join her (boy)friend how that Chong Wei is out :P ? Tough to say as both are not performing up to their usual standards. However, experience-wise, I have to give it to Wong. Wong in 3.Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah vs. Lee Jae Jin/Hwang Ji ManChoong and Lee have been impressive ...

Asian Badminton Championships Day 3 Predictions
2008-04-16 18:03:00
After the numerous upsets yesterday, day 3 appears to be more scripted.Lydia Cheah vs. Kaori ImabeppuLydia created one of the suprise upset yesterday, unseating seventh seed Kaori Mori in 2 straight sets to advance to the second round. Today, she faces another Kaori, this time, less experienced and less heard of Kaori Imabeppu. After yesterday's timely confidence boost, Lydia should easily take this one.Julia Wong vs. Ai GotoAfter disposing of Indian ace Saina Nehwal in 3 hard sets yesterday, Julia takes on Ai Goto, a lesser known Japanese shuttler who beat another Malaysian, Tee Jing Yi. Like Lydia, Julia should be able to win this match with ease.Tan Wee Kiong/Woon Khe Wei vs. He Hanbin/Yu YangIt will be a tough ask for Wee Kiong and Khe Wei to beat Hanbin and Yuyang, the newly crowned Indian Open champions. However, I do think it is time for a breakthrough from the Asian Junior Champions, after being exposed to many senior tournaments. Malaysia have gone without a superb Mixed D...

Badminton: Chen defeats Lin to win All-England men's singles title
2008-03-10 03:17:00
March 09, ChannelNewsAsiaBIRMINGHAM, England : Hampered by a knee injury, China's defending champion Lin Dan failed in his bid for a fourth All-England men's singles title when he suffered a shock straight games defeat from compatriot Chen Jin in Sunday's final.Chen, the world No.4, had never beaten world No.1 Lin in six previous meetings, but he completed the championship without dropping a game with a 22-20, 25-23 victory.Having had three match points he finally won it on the fourth with a cross-court smash.Lin suffered an injury to his left knee in training recently in Beijing, and he said: "It really hurt when I got up this morning and I couldn't jump or smash properly. I did think about pulling out when he got ahead in the second, but there were a lot of spectators and I wanted to keep playing for them."I am disappointed, but I am also pleased for Chen. He is a good friend and a team mate and he deserved the win today."Read more this news quotephoto: China's Chen Jin dives...
Politics and Badminton Should NOT Mix
2008-03-07 03:32:00
It is with great sadness that I read the following article from malaysiakini: Badminton and politics meet in GopengLee Chong Wei, Malaysia's number 1 Men's Singles shuttler, campaigned for the Barisan National, a political party in Malaysia for the upcoming General Elections tomorrow. I am a great fan of Lee, and of Badminton, and anyone who knows me can testify to this. However, I have to say that I am deeply offended and disappointed by Lee's decision to involve politics in this wonderful sport. His integrity and by association, the integrity of the sport has been tainted and stained by this selfish act.Shuttlers win titles and medals for the country, for the glory of the people. It is the taxpayer's money that Lee uses to help in his training and development. To use his glory and fame, which he owes to the people of Malaysia, to campaign for a particular political party is a highly and deeply offensive to the people of Malaysia. You are a representative of Malaysia, and I eq...

Choong Hann Continues to Wow the Badminton Community
2008-01-24 09:53:00
Malaysian veteran player Wong Choong Hann today put on a solid performance to challenge world number 3 Bao Chunlai for a place in the Quarterfinals. In his 21-14 / 15-21 / 21-19 lost to the Chinese player that nearly lasted an hour, Wong can be fully proud of himself for putting up such a gallant and brave exhibition of badminton.I urge all Malaysian players to emulate and take after the repeated delightful performances by Wong. Wong has displayed incredible fighting spirit to continue fighting and persevering against all odds. If all Malaysians learn to be like Wong, it leaves no doubt in my mind that Malaysia's prowess in badminton will surpass even China's.Coming up next is the Thomas Cup. I will take this opportunity to highlight a peculiar and worrying selection by the BAM. Wong should be the second singles, not Hafiz. Wong should be the team leader. Wong should rightfully be honored by the BAM. Hafiz Hashim has failed to progress through round 2 of an international badminto...
