Inside you will find shelves stacked with loaves to the tune of granary bloomer, seeded farmhouse and spelt with apple and cider. Along the front window you will also find a small drum of olive oil that you can fill up your own bottles with. Splendid! We haven't been back since then, so hopefully they are still doing freshly baked pastries. I believe they are also serving crepes now. Taste was a okay. The mille feuille and puff were fine, baguette was fine, croissant looked like Vons quality though.Baguette was fresh, just came out of the oven. It was really long.I don't know what they are, but they were super sweet and sticky. I'm guessing maybe deep-fried dough coated in syrup or something. Until now, I have not heard of anyone I know who had lost their job but me thinks it's the calm before the storm. So, we thought we should start looking at spending a bit lesser on dining out. When we think about budget, no frills meal, we often head off to Happy Date. It just dawned on us that despite being there so many times, we had never gotten down to blog on them. Happy Date is located on Park Road just off where the Richmond City Hall is. It is a very popular Hongkong Style eatery. Like many HK style cafes, they also have a bakery but I don't really think highly of their bakery. I much prefer the ones found in The Boss, Kam Do and particularly Lido.

We folded up the cot, and moved the rest of the stuff in the way to the front part of the trailer. There are two, fifty five gallon, plastic drums filled with feed in the back. It isn't practical to move these to the front, so we loaded Blackie in with those beside him. The water tanks were getting low, and there was quite a bit of trash we needed to dispose of, so we backtracked south on Highway 29 to a gas station. We then drove through Lynchburg and stopped at strip mall in Amherst, Virginia. There were “No pedestrians bicycles, animals, self propelled machinery...” signs to this point. We still don't understand what these signs are really about. There seemed to be plenty of shoulder on the road. The smell of freshly made breads, rolls and pastries plus the warmth of these eateries is enough to make you feel at home and comfortable.Bastiaan Bakery and Cafe is one of those places. We found it while walking on the Hongmei pedestrian street which is littered with many restaurants and cafes. It was very busy on that Sunday that we visited. A lot of people preferred to sit outside on the sidewalk as it was a sunny afternoon. It was still quite cold but I guess when the sun is shining down it can be nice and brisk.
