Can baking soda curb global warming?
2007-12-30 13:18:00
Some scientists have proposed compressing carbon dioxide and sticking it in underground caves as a way to cut down on greenhouse gases. Joe David Jones wants to make baking soda out of it. Jones, the founder and CEO of Skyonic, has come up with an industrial process called SkyMine that captures 90 percent of the carbon dioxide coming out of smoke stacks and mixes it with sodium hydroxide to make sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda. The energy required for the reaction to turn the chemicals into baking soda comes from the waste heat from the factory. "It is cleaner than food-grade (baking soda)," he said. The system also removes 97 percent of the heavy metals, as well as most of the sulfur and nitrogen compounds, Jones said.Luminant, a utility formerly known as TXU, installed a pilot version of the system at its Big Brown Steam Electric Station in Fairfield, Texas, last year. Skyonic, meanwhile, hopes to install a system that will consume the greenhouse gas output of a large--500 mega...
Baking Soda and Hope Can Cure the Post-Christmas Blues
2007-12-27 18:13:00
Ordinarily, I feel a little bit of a letdown after Christmas ? no more cheesecake for breakfast, no presents to look forward to, no reason to listen to Billy Squier?s Christmas song. But this year, I felt, instead, a slightly strange sense of satisfaction. I think it?s because so many of my questions were answered ? all of them, in fact, except two. Those questions were, in no particular order (well, okay, in the order in which they were answered):How many Apple Jacks will stack on the head of a stuffed bear?Which fuse turns off the power to the kitchen wall? Will I convincingly be able to act as though whatever is in the deep fryer box is as good as the deep fryer would have been? What kind of licorice do cats like, anyway? How did Michael Myers know it was his sister?AndWhat was the point of the second Bourne movie, then?AndAm I the kind of husband who will vacuum the rug even though you can?t see the pee?I think, just looking at that list, you will know all you ever need to know abou...
Christmas Cookies: Cinnamon-Chocolate Swirls
2007-12-22 23:52:00
Now home-baked cookies and I have a history of sorts. I developed an avid interest in baked goodies early on, and as time went by it turned into a passion of sorts. Yes, there's always a time for a story and this is one for Christmas cookies. As I stumbled across Susan's Christmas Cookies from Around the World 2007, I was inspired to dig out my old faithful - a treasured recipe book which holds a collection of my very favourite tried and trusted cookie recipes. Just a turn of the page and memories of baking batches of cookies for school events, for family, friends all came flooding back. Just as much as I loved the aroma of my Mum's kitchen every time I loaded in a fresh batch to bake, the fact remains that I really have not had the time or the opportunity to indulge in this joy for several years. Now thanks to Susan I have come back to delight in baking cookies. Of course half the joy of baking cookies at home (read from scratch) lies in the sharing. With every fresh batch I hav...

There is a difference between baking soda and baking powder
2007-07-17 00:54:00
I am convinced of this after making my first dessert in a crockpot (ever). I made a "hot fudge Cake Sundae" and had everything the recipe called for - except for the nuts and the baking powder. I substituted Baking Soda and it gave the cake this weird no flavor flavor- if that makes any sense?Behold- the new crockpot:And the Hot Fudge Sundae Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream (which helped it a little):I had a jar of the Calumet Baking Powder, but it had expired, so I threw it out and forgot to replace it. I do need to pick up some as I'm supposed to bake two dozen cookies for an event I'm going to help with on Thursday.Word to the wise- always keep BOTH Baking Powder and Baking Soda on hand. *Sigh*Now, to share my Hot Fudge Sundae Cake recipe with you:Hot Fudge Sundae Cake1 cup all purpose flour1/2 cup granulated sugar2 T. baking cocoa2 tsp. baking powder1/2 tsp. salt1/2 cup milk2 T vegetable oil1 tsp vanilla1/2 cup chopped nuts3/4 cup packed brown sugar1/4 cup baking cocoa1 1/2 cups ...
Baking Soda to Sooth Itchy, Irritated Skin
2007-06-16 08:20:00
Baking soda is great for a number of things, including relieving itchy skin from insect bites or a rash from cosmetics and other irritants. Why it works: Your skin feels itchy from insect bites because of the insect’s acidic sting/venom. As baking soda is alkaline, it quickly neutralises the acid, thus soothing the itch. Baking ...
What's the Skinny on Baking Soda and Body Fat?
2007-05-28 22:02:00
The other day I was scrolling through a list of keywords that people use to find my website and I kept coming across "Baking Soda and body fat" so I decided to do some research. What I came up with was interesting. As far as I can tell baking soda per say does not directly, affect body fat. But, what I did find was a correlation between baking soda, citric acid and metabolism. You see our bodies are like a chemistry set and they have to be balanced to run properly. And one of the things that needs to balanced is our body's pH. So what's pH? Well technically, it stands for potential of hydrogen. It is a measure of the degree of saturation of the hydrogen ion in a substance or solution. "Potential of Hydrogen measures the degree of the acidity or the alkalinity of a solution as measured on a scale (pH scale) of 0 to 14. The midpoint of 7.0 on the pH scale represents neutrality, i.e., a "neutral" solution is neither acid nor alkaline. Numbers below 7.0 indicate acidity;...

What's all the hype about Baking Soda?
2007-04-11 15:28:00
Baking Soda is a staple in just about every household. In some homes it's used strictly for baking in others, you will find the standard box in the refrigerator. In my home, it is used for just about everything. It is cheap, safe and actually does what it claims to do. What more could you ask for! Baking Soda is sodium bicarbonate. It is found naturally in mineral deposits. Most of the baking soda in North America is mined in Wyoming. Not that it really matters all we have to do is buzz down to the local grocery store and grab a box. If you go to the Arm & Hammer website you will find a great section on all the things you can do with baking soda. You probably know by now that baking soda can be used for just about anything. It is one of the most multifaceted natural products you will ever find. There has been a resurgence in the use of baking soda over the last 20 years due to the increased interest in using environmentally friendly products. Studies show that bakin...
Law Considers Tracking Baking Soda Users
2007-04-06 17:54:00
And in other ways to waste tax dollars, Missouri considers a law to make baking soda a controlled substance and have everyone register who wants to buy it. Don’t worry — this law looks like it’s going nowhere soon, but the story is one which is worth noting as a troubling trend in law enforcement. As Radley Balko at Reason Magazine says, “you’re treating the vast majority of people who use a legal product legally like children, simply because a few people use it illegally.” From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Sales of cold medications containing pseudoephedrine, such as Sudafed, are strictly regulated in Missouri. Customers must show a photo ID when they buy the medicine. Pharmacists must log the names and addresses of buyers, including how much they buy. People under 18 may not buy the medicines. The sponsor of the baking soda bill, Rep. Talibdin El-Amin, D-St. Louis, said the same approach was needed for baking soda because crack cocaine is ...
Baking soda for heartburn?
2007-03-18 01:24:00
Will baking soda work for heartburn or not? Yeah it will but only for a very short time. In response to alkaline environment created by baking soda your stomach will try to produce more acid which will then cause even more pain. So use it only when it really hurts badly. Otherwise try some warm water to dilute acid. It is a longer term solution.
Does Baking Soda Absorb Fridge Odor?
2007-02-23 18:37:01
There is a very popular point-of-view (myself also believing) that Baking Soda absorbs odor, and that placing a box of soda in your refrigerator will eliminate what I like to call “smelly fridge“. Well, after personally looking into this phenomenon I have found it to be false.  More precisely this is nothing more than a clever marketing ploy by the baking soda people; the fact is, baking soda is very poor at absorbing odors. It seems to make sense, however, so a lot of people have spent a lot of money to place soda boxes in their fridge or freezer, only to still have smelly fridge. Activated charcoal would work much better but is expensive.  The best idea is probably to wrap your food and clean the fridge every once in a while!
