Microsoft (MSFT) 'Fortress-like' balance sheet
2009-08-04 06:00:00
"Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is a well-run company with a fortress-like balance sheet," says growth stock expert Brandon Clay.In his Invest with an Edge he suggests, "Maicrosoft’s war chest of cash and their ability to sparkle with products like Bing makes the company an attractive long-term bet." Here's the advisor's review."-;Microsoft was once the kind of stock investors dreamed of owning.  Rising thousands of percent from its IPO in the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, Microsoft was at one point the largest U.S. company by market cap."As technology evolved and Microsoft matured, Wall Street turned its focus to 'sexier' areas of technology like Internet stocks.  Operating system software wasn't the in-thing anymore.  Microsoft became a value stock rather than a growth play."Microsoft joined Intel as the first pure technology companies to become members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Nothing says &#...

Americans have been preoccupied with the news of the (nebulous) bailout plan proposed by the U.S. Treasury for troubled mortgage securitizers Freddie Mac (FHLMC) and Fannie Mae (FNMA)–”Fraudie Mac” and “Phony Mae,” as some have called them. Certainly, Secretary Paulson and has gang of Silver Spooners and government flunkies have been selling the plan ...

Off Balance Sheet accounting
2008-02-04 23:56:00
As an investor we would be looking for information that is from various sources like annual report, news, analysis etc. But truly there are times when we are not sure about how the company is making money. Though one may think of spending more time in knowing exactly what the company is doing. But that may not be true, as managers may choose not to disclose those to the public. Hence there is always a cap on the information available to the public when there is no ceiling set by any governing body. This is the major reason why stock market are inefficient!. Let us look more closely at specific accounting malfeasance. This will help us see what is the information that we should be looking more closely when evaluating a company? The biggest corporate scandal in U.S happened in the starting of this decade including Enron, WorldCom. Although Enron was involved in more than one accounting scandals, the important one was the off balance sheet accounting. It is just pure number jugglery. ...

The Balance Sheet
2007-11-23 08:41:00
As discussed in my earlier posts, the balance sheet shows the financial position of an entity. In addition to the example introduced earlier whereby the owner contributed $10,000 cash at bank as capital (please refer to my post titled Debits and Credits), there are many more examples of transactions that have an impact on the balance sheet, i.e. they would change the items and figures relected in the balance sheet. Some of the examples are as follows:-1. Purchase of asset using cash at bank (by way of issuing cheque)Using the example of ABC Limited in which the owner have contributed $10,000 cash at bank as capital, assume the owner decided to use part of the money to purchase an asset e.g. a computer desk costing $500, the double entry would be as follow:-Dr. Computer desk $500Cr. Cash at bank $500After the transaction has been effected, the balance sheet of ABC Co. Limited would show:-ABC Co. Lim...
Balance Sheet Update - September 2007

Our net worth has increased by £530 this month, not as much as we would like but we still have lots of wedding expenses to pay. At least it has increased. We are now 13.6% on our way to the 2012 net worth target of £400,000, an increase of 0.13%.I'm using Google Spreadsheets to publish the sheet and I've not quite done it right as August sheet has changed to the same as September's! Something to work on before the October update.

Quickly add $20,000 or more to your balance sheet
2007-06-12 05:14:00
By - Jeff BeaubienThis is such a fast and easy way to add $20,000 to your balance sheet, I'm surprised it's not being done by every free person in this great country of ours. Since you're probably skeptical, I am going to use a real-world example of how I accomplished this recently.Note: This technique requires that you be pre-qualified for a mortgage.I received a phone call from one of my Realtors, Cindy. She told me that an agent in her office had listed a home that morning and that the sellers were about to be foreclosed upon. Within 30 minutes of her phone call, Cindy and I went out to see it.It wasn't anything fancy, a 3-bedroom, 1-bath ranch with a 2 car attached garage. The sellers were asking $89,000 - about $5,000 less than what the home was actually worth.I made an offer on the house that looked like this: $85,000 with $1,640 back at close for improvements (that I will actually use to help offset the down payment on the home). The sellers accepted my offer so we arrang...

Social Security and Medicare entitlement promises are completely out of control. Right now, our government owes more than $500,000 for every household in the country. How To Determine Management Effectiveness
2007-05-30 00:43:00
Investors and traders both use alot of ratios to deduce whether to buy/sell/short a security. With so many ratios to consider, it can get confusing, especially when 2 ratios almost look alike.Consider return on equity (ROE) and return on assets (ROA). At first glance they do look similar. Both measure some kind of return and is some way are related to the company's earnings from their investments. Obviously both ratios represent different things. A closer look at these two ratios reveals some key differences. Let us find out more.Return on equity (ROE)Of all the fundamental ratios that investors look at, one of the most important is return on equity. ROE is nothing but a measure of how much profit a company generates with the money shareholders have invested. In other words how effectively the company uses the money invested by investors. This tells you alot about how good the management of the company is.Return on Equity = (Annual Net Income/Average Shareholders' Equity)The net i...
Hidden Financial Risk: Understanding Off Balance Sheet Accounting
2007-05-04 05:59:00
Review"Ketz' discussion is fascinating, although all too useful to future scamsters wanting to find out just how those clever guys at Enron did it." (UPI Business and Economics, August 11, 2003) Book DescriptionAn insider's guide to understanding and eliminating accounting fraudHow do these high-profile accounting scandals occur and what could have been done to prevent them. Hidden Financial Risk fills that void by examining methods for off balance sheet accounting, with a particular emphasis on special purpose entities (SPE), the accounting ruse of choice at Enron and other beleaguered companies. J. Edward Ketz identifies the incentives for managers to deceive investors and creditors about financial risk and also shows investors how to protect their investments in a world filled with accounting and auditing frauds.J. Edward Ketz, PhD (State College, PA) is MBA Faculty Director and Associate Professor of Accounting at Penn State's Smeal College of Business. He has been cited in t...
