Chechen War is Over?
2008-07-06 02:57:00
The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here.Updated July 12:A Norwegian Russophile of unknown motivations came to the blog to comment on the post about the execution of six Russian conscripts. He repeated the usual pro-Russian propaganda about the crazy Chechen War.I don't know about the Norwegians, but the truth is that almost all Greeks, Serbs, Montenegrins and Macedonians will always line up with Russia. I'm not sure about Bulgarians. Also you are going to see this to some extent in Romania, especially in Moldova. It's not so much Pan-Slavism (which doesn't really exist in a rational form), but more Pan-Orthodoxism.For instance, the Poles, Czechs and Ukrainians are all Slavs, but you don't necessarily see pan-Slavism with them. In the Poles, it is almost nonexistent. This is due to the Catholicism of the Poles. In the 20th Century, there were horrible wars waged with Polish Cat...
The Balkans Be Letting Me Down
2008-06-22 07:29:00
I'm in DC for a few days of frolic with the Ski Bum and Fidel, so I haven't been on this at all. I arrived at the hotel just in time to catch the extra time and penalties in the Croatia-Turkey Euro 2008 game, when Croatia snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, followed immediately by defeat from the jaws of victory. People in rooms next to me were undoubtedly entertained by my screaming "YES! YES! YES!" followed by "NO! NO! NO!" two minutes later. After Croatia fell, I adopted the Dutch, with predictable results. At this point I'll just pass on rooting for anyone, to save myself disappointment. If I weren't so personally scarred by their last two wins, I probably would adopt Turkey -- their scrappy comebacks are endearing. I wonder if people are getting really hot and bothered about their advancement in Euro 2008, in an Ottomans-advancing-on-Vienna sort of way.The night of the Croatia debacle, Fidel and I went to the Brickskeller beer bar, a longtime favorite of mine, best kno...

Bush OK's Weapons For Kosovo; Balkans Struggle Debated Worldwide
2008-03-20 17:17:00

Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier reported to CBC News that Canada officially recognized Kosovo as a new state. Dusan Batakovic, Serbia's ambassador to Canada, expressed his unhappiness with the decision by calling Belgrade for a consultation. Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper told reporters yesterday that Kosovo's situation is very unique, and unlike the situation in Quebec.

WELCOME TO THE BALKANS
2008-02-14 01:59:00
SOFIA, BULGARIA - JUNE 2006In June 2006 I visited Bulgaria for the first time. On my way, I made a stopover in London and had dinner at the Wagamama, Covent Garden, a nice restaurant in a lovely area. By the way, do you know which is the only street in London where you drive on the right hand side of the road?"SAVOY - A great (and expensive) hotel"***Sofia is one of the oldest capital cities in Europe, its history dating back to the seventh century BC, when Thracians established a settlement there, and the monuments of its Thracian, Roman, Bulgarian and Ottoman history can be seen side by side with modern contemporary buildings."GRAND HOTEL, SOFIA is also a nice hotel. The pictures however (including the blurred) do not make justice to its fine quality" "VIEW from room 512""NATIONAL THEATRE - Ivan Vazov's National Theatre is the oldest theatre in the country. The Neoclassical building was finished in 1906 and opened on January 3rd, 1907. Unfortunately, the water was not springing f...

The Balkans Are Heating Up with Russian Support
2007-11-21 19:40:00
Convinced Russia again is a super power, now that the US is bogged down in Iraq, he is rattling sabers in the former USSR client states from Central Asia to Eastern Europe. The Balkans have been a tinderbox for war for centuries. It continues today to suggest a possible WWIII should the US or Russia call the other's cards into play. Dubya was serious when he warned of WWIII. International Crisis Group On October 30, one hand in action, the UK, France, Italy and Germany -along with the US - issued a joint demarche to Serbia criticising its suggestion a few days before that the fates of Kosovo and Bosnia were tied: that if Kosovo became independent, the Dayton Accords might also be questioned, undoing 12 years of difficult and costly international engagement to patch a devastated Bosnia back together. The other hand then took over last week, as EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn initialled a stabilisation and association agreement with Belgrade, the next step toward membership...

Balkans: Wahabis seen as growing regional threat
2007-04-20 10:30:00
(AKI).- Although still a small group, Wahabis, followers of a fundamentalist school of Islam, are being seen by officials and observers as a growing threat to the Balkans. Tensions between Wahabis and mainstream Muslims have been simmering for the past 18 months as Wahabis seek to gain influence in Bosnia-Heregovina and also in Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo. In the past months, seven suspected militants were arrested in southern Serbia and a radical Islamist training camp and weapons cache uncovered. Evidence, the Serbian interior ministry says, that Wahabis are trying to recruit potential terrorists and plot attacks.More
