Secret Ballot or Card Check?
2009-06-28 14:54:00 Some feel that the proposed legislation of the Employee Free Choice Act would strip the right to a secret ballot from workers, since it is a more accurate reflection of their choices than a check of cards collected by a union organizer. Workers sometimes sign cards because they feel pressured. Other

Russ Verney asks for money for ballot access
2008-06-13 15:32:00 Dear Friend, Since I wrote you late yesterday, several hundred people have rushed us a contribution to help the Barr/Root Presidential campaign be on all 50 state ballots this November 4th. As you can imagine in a Presidential campaign there are hundreds (and sometimes it feels like thousands) of important projects that need our immediate attention, but in June – one issue dominates all others. And as I’m sure you know its making sure we get on all 50 state ballots. About 27 states are relatively easy but 23 take varying degrees of work But no question, Oklahoma is the hardest state. In 2004 Oklahoma voters’ only choice was between a Republican and a Democrat. No third party or independent candidate was on the ballot – in fact they’ve rigged the election rules in Oklahoma so you can’t even write in a candidate’s name. Late yesterday, I got a phone call from Oklahoma State Chair, Angela O’Dell. To say Angela is passionate about her job as State Chair would ...
Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate finishes ballot access drive
2008-06-11 09:24:00 Redpath says Virginians do not need "six more years of the same two parties" Libertarian Party National Chairman and candidate for U.S. Senate William Redpath will deliver more than 16,000 signatures to the Virginia State Board of Elections on Tuesday in Richmond, concluding more than two months of petition gathering to qualify for ballot access as a Libertarian in the state of Virginia. Redpath, of Leesburg, will face Republican Jim Gilmore and Democrat Mark Warner for the seat currently held by five-term Republican Senator John Warner. "This will be an open seat, and one that is highly contested," says Redpath, who is a Vice President at BIA Financial Network, Inc. "My entry into the race will bring more competition by creating an alternative to the two establishment candidates. Virginians deserve to get the best representation as possible in Washington, and we do this by inviting more choices into the selection process." Redpath will be delivering these petition signatur...

Tom Yager leaks to Ballot Access News
2008-05-27 16:39:00 Well, maybe it's not as dramatic as all that, but in fact, Ballot Access News does attribute their report to Yager of VA. In the report, BAN announces that Cynthia McKinney has secured enough committed votes to win a first ballot victory in her race for the Green Party Presidential nomination. The only "problem", if there is one, is that simply having the committed delegates is not enough, for McKinney or any of the other candidates. Unless those delegates show up at the convention in numbers high enough, her nomination is not sewn up.Apparently the national party has decided to charge each state for proxy votes to be cast at the national convention, and some states may face difficulties fielding their entire slate of delegates, even with proxy votes.Green Party Watch and Green News and Opinion will report more news on this front as it comes available.

Is Vizquel a can't-miss, first-ballot hall of famer?
2008-05-23 19:23:00 Omar Vizquel is a grab bag of surprises and no doubt will be until the day he cedes his territory on the left side of the infield for good and enters his new life as a painter or sculptor or musician or bon vivant at large. Vizquel is two games short of tying Luis Aparicio's all-time record of 2,583 games at shortstop. He has 11 Gold Gloves and is regarded as one of the greatest defensive shortstops ever. Yet he promises that when he looks back at his career, he will be most proud of what he did at the plate. As Vizquel sat by his locker in Denver this week, he was asked if breaking Aparicio's longevity mark will be his platinum achievement. The question to be asked five years after Vizquel retires is whether he will be an easy "in" when the baseball writers receive their first Hall of Fame ballot that lists Vizquel. When he signed with the Giants before the 2005 season, there was much debate over his qualifications to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Certainly it would have been a ...

The complaint can be seen here. It alleges that justices of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court entered into secret meetings with legislative leaders, bargaining with those leaders to increase judicial pay. In exchange, the justices were to decide the outcome of certain pending cases in a way that would be pleasing to legislative leaders. Thanks to Howard Bashman?s How Appealing for this news. Both the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and the Pennsylvania legislature, have been resolutely hostile to minor party and independent candidate ballot access, for decades, but especially in this decade.

The connection is rather weak, but expect more ads like this down the road. The ad has drawn a quick rebuke from the national Republican Party as well as Republican nominee John McCain. The NC GOP, however, is an independent body, so the decision to run the ad is theirs.Perdue recently pledged to run a positive-only advertising campaign. Texas Prosecutes Little Old Ladies for Voter Fraud, Let's Republican Ballot
2008-03-31 19:32:00 AlterNet Willie Ray was a 69-year-old African-American City Council member from Texarkana who wanted her granddaughter, Jamillah Johnson, to learn about civil rights and voting during the 2004 presidential election. The pair helped homebound seniors citizens get absentee ballots, and once they were filled out, put them in the mail. Fort Worth's Gloria Meeks, 69, was a church-going, community activist who proudly ran a phone bank and helped homebound elderly people like Parthenia McDonald, 79, to vote by mail. McDonald, whose mailbox was two blocks away from her home (she recently died), called Meeks "an angel" for helping her, a friend of both women said. And until he recently moved out of state, Walter Hinojosa, a retired school teacher and labor organizer from Austin, was another Democratic Party volunteer who helped elderly and disabled people vote by getting them absentee ballots and mailing them. Today, Ray and Johnson have criminal records for breaking Texas election law ...
