Understanding the Land Promise: Part 4
2008-06-11 13:48:00
–continuing from part 3. Here is a fourth, and most definitive basis for “spiritualizing” the land promise…. 4) The connection between land and rest To start, read these verses in Hebrews 4. Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. For ...
Not Reaching or Not Coming
2008-04-29 15:43:00
?The number of people baptized in Southern Baptist churches fell for the third straight year in 2007 to the denomination?s lowest level since 1987. Although the SBC added 473 new churches and gave more than $1.3 billion to support mission activities around the world, there?s no escaping the disappointing fact that Southern Baptists are not reaching as many people for Christ as they once did, according to Thom S. Rainer, president and CEO of LifeWay Christian Resources, which gathered the information on the denomination?s behalf.?This is the opening paragraph to a LifeWay research article by Rob Phillips. This post is not for or against Rob Phillips, but I would like to consider the thought ?there?s no escaping the disappointing fact that Southern Baptists are not reaching as many people for Christ as they once did.? In fact, we could further narrow down the point of this post to ?not reaching? in the scope of the context of the paragraph. What exactly is meant by ?not reaching? in t...
Baptism - His Excuse for Domestic Violence!

Cedrick Wilson it seems got into a bit more trouble with the team after his arrest, but James Harrison it seems had a GOOD excuse!Mr. Harrison according to a police affidavit, broke down a door, broke Ms. Tibbott's cell phone in half as she attempted to call 911, then slapped her face with an open hand, knocking off her glasses. I almost fell off my chair when I read the 'justification' over this!"What Jimmy Harrison was doing and how the incident occurred, what he was trying to do was really well worth it," he said of Mr. Harrison's initial intent with his son. "He was doing something that was good, wanted to take his son to get baptized where he lived and things like that. She said she didn't want to do it."How about that! On Baptism by Immersion
2008-04-11 04:34:00
I recently received the following question via the combox in my sidebar:Baptism by immersion only: I went to catholic.com but I need some more stuff on this. I just got back from getting my rump handed to me on this one. Can ya help?Well, without knowing what their exact arguments are, I can't really say a whole lot. But, I can point you to various articles online that address this issue:Baptism: Immersion Only?Catholic Baptism and ImmersionDoes Col 2:15 Disprove Baptism by Sprinkling or Pouring? Is Baptism by Immersion Only?On the Legitimacy of Baptism by Sprinkling or PouringWere All Biblical Baptisms by Immersion?A lot of those links were broken, so I had to look up the archived version. They should work now, but if for some reason they don't, just leave a comment and let me know.Remember that immersion is a legitimate form of baptism in the Catholic Church, and it is actually the form that best symbolizes the dying to sin and rising to new life that truly takes place in baptism...

Baptism by Humiliation
2008-02-24 04:39:00
Baptism by Humiliation.  Enlightenment through Remorse. A honey-soaked voice-over follows me around, testifying to all that I endure. The Prophet Rises Before Dawn, Cleanses and Girds Himself.  In Perpetual Hunger, He Imbibes a Scalding Elixir, Waits on Customers, Calls on Suppliers. [This post is an excerpt from Diary of a Heretic, the novel. Click here to read the first episode, or here to read the previous one.]To get through the day I imagine myself playing an exalted role of the insanely exalted role Carlos was fattening me for.In a Shaft of Light The Prophet Concentrates on Everyone’s Pain and Suffering, Everywhere. Extremely juvenile, I know, but the game comforts me. Carlos acts as if as if I’m no longer present.  He makes donuts, cakes and pies early and phones realtors later, looking to buy a space that would combine living quarters for seven, hold activities for two hundred, and show off a glorious, new bakery. Meaning whenever the subject of m...

I got lost reading posts after posts of blogs after blogs, nor I don't have the time to post the posts I wanted to post for my blog. How many times can I say blog and post in a sentence? :)The other day I said I'm logging off the computer to hop on the treadmill. Well, I lied! When I logged of I noticed that the sink is full of dishes from the previous night's dinner, the living room full of clutter, and the mounds of laundry for the week needs to be put in the washing machine (because no matter how loud I scream for these pile of clothes to crawl inside the washing machine, they won't do it themselves, hmp!)...so anyway, I started washing the dishes (mostly rinsing and loading in the dishwasher which I really should have done the previous night, then hand wash pots and pans). So there! I did not get chance to hop on the treadmill. I keep on saying oh I'd do it later today but the "later today" didn't happen either. I always found things to do other than hop on the treadmil...
Social Media Marketing Baptism by Fire
2008-02-17 12:02:00
I recently guest authored a post on David Harry’s blog entitled “Social Media Pitfalls: 5 Lessons Learned“. In this post I discuss the lessons I’ve learned by diving into social media. My hope was that others could learn from my mistakes so they don’t make the same mistakes when getting started in social media marketing. The ...

Did everyone have a lovely Valentine's Day? I certainly hope so. I hope you were all up to your ears in chocolates, flowers and naughty presents from Spencer Gifts.Last night, after I opened the Valentine's Day card that arrived in the mail from my mother, I was sitting alone on the couch with a reheated bowl of chicken fried rice in my lap and I got to thinking about my finances. In particular, how much I've been letting things slide. I've been buying a lot of lunches in the cafeteria. I've been going to expensive bars on the weekends. All of this must stop.I'll be updating my net worth tomorrow and though I haven't started crunching any numbers, I'm expecting a blood bath.I'm planning to do some shopping at Trader Joe's this weekend and to meticulously plan out next week's meals. It's the food that always gets me. Saving money would be so much easier if I was a robot.
Repent, and Do What?
2008-02-09 22:21:00
I recently received the following question: Ok, so I'm still confused about this but has some idea, but need clarification. Mk 16:16-17 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;Acts 2:38-39 And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him."For the word baptized from these verses, do they mean the same? What does be baptized mean? I've recently heard some bad interpretation of this and I don't know how to properly explain it to them. They use it as a backup that it is God's will that every Christian be baptized in the Holy Spirit (Baptism in the Holy Spirit w...

Martinique 1848 and a Baptism
2008-01-25 22:01:00
UnknownFrench, Martinique, summer 1848Daguerreotype4 3/8 x 5 13/16 in.J Paul Getty Museum This photograph records the baptismal ceremony for the slaves of the West Indian island of Martinique in 1848.The sacrament represented affirmation from the church of their recent emancipation from slavery.Britain captured the island during the Seven Years' War, holding it from 1762 to 1763. Between 1794 and 1815, there was a strong British interest in Martinique, with Britain controlling the island during the French Revolutionary Wars from 1794 to 1802; and again during the Napoleonic wars from 1809 to 1814.Slavery was abolished under the earlier period of British rule, but reinstated after 1802, when the Treaty of Amiens gave Martinique back to France, and Napoléon Bonaparte allowed slavery again.Abolishing slavery in all its colonies was one of the goals declared by the new French provisional government in early 1848. Although news of this objective reached Martinique in late March, it was ...

The offspring of believers are born holy, because their children, while yet in the womb, before they breathe the vital air, have been adopted into the covenant of eternal life. Nor are they brought into the church by baptism on any other ground than because they belonged to the body of the Church before they were born.[Interim Adultero&endash;&endash;germanu-m: cui adiecta est vera Christianae Pacificationis et Ecclesiae Reformandae Ratio. Steve Ray and Baptism
2008-01-16 08:12:00
Steve Ray has an interesting post about being born of water and the Spirit (Jn 3:5).  He lists nine places in the Bible where water and the Spirit represent new birth, and then concludes: Too bad many Evangelicals and Fundamentalists refuse to see it but the Bible is pretty clear about new birth through the sacrament of ...

2008-01-14 03:27:00
This morning I went to a baptism.I grew up Catholic, but I hadn't been to a mass in years. As I sat there, mildly terrified of the looming audience participation (the part I always loathed in any mass), my mind wandered back to the seemingly endless Sundays I sat in the pews at St. Augustin's Church in lovely Des Moines, Iowa... and I reflected on my family church going coping mechanisms... which, embarrassingly, often focused on the boy-crush of the moment. However...my childhood meditation was interrupted by the stirring BIG DRAMA on the other side of the church. There was a man standing in the doorway. The sun was at his back, and he was illuminated by the sun -- he looked like Jesus. Well, at least the depiction of Jesus on black velvet air brushed paintings. And I should know what Jesus looks like -- when I was 3, I identified a tall bearded random man (very loudly, as I recall) as Jesus as he walked down the aisle of my family's church. The parishoners thought that was hi...
Baptism of the Lord
2008-01-13 15:48:00
The priest at the Mass I attended last night told a story about his first baptism as a priest. He was all set to administer the sacrament himself when the senior priest where he was stationed insisted he would do the baptism himself, with the new priest just watching to see how it is done. He agreed, and Sunday rolled around. The baby being baptized was particularly uncooperative, and the senior

Since it’s been all Mormon conversations here as of late I wanted to test our knowledge of the book of Mormon. On the Washing of Regeneration
2007-12-05 03:33:00
I haven't participated in any debates in a while, so this should be fun. I recently entered the fray over at HCR, in a thread on baptismal regeneration. It amazes me that there are Christians in this world who still don't believe in this. The Scriptural witness is abundantly clear! At any rate, here is my first response to, you guessed it, "seal."Pax Christi, phatcatholic - - - - - - - - - -As far as it being a regenerative work, know that Judas was Baptized given powers to cast out demons, and did miracles yet he was a reprobate. That doesn't mean that his baptism wasn't regenerative. It just means that he fell from his previous state of grace. Baptism doesn't grant an assurance of salvation. It cleanses us of all sin and initiates us into His Body, but we're still called to live lives of faithfulness to God. If we don't we will go to hell, even though we once were cleansed.Acts 10 show the Holy Spirit falling on the House Hold of Cornelius before they touched the Water and th...
Christian Children's Book: Salvation, Baptism, & Eternal Security
2007-11-14 21:59:00
The initial purpose behind writing this book is to focus on the current questions my children have concerning salvation, baptism, and eternal security. One of the greatest ministries we have as Christian parents is to teach our children about the things of God. Can there be any teaching more important than the Gospel itself, of how the love of God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Willing to suffer the death of the cross, Jesus Christ gave Himself ransom for all those which put their faith in Him. Through His death, burial, and resurrection, we as sinners can find forgiveness of sins and eternal life in Jesus Christ. Our children deserve to know of this great love. As Christian parents we owe it to our children to tell them of the things of God, and as saved sinners we owe it to God to be obedient to His Word.Although the pages of this book may be read by the children alone, I would suggest that the parent(s) consider spending a moment with their children with it. This book i...
The Assault on Baptism
2007-11-13 14:47:00

Here is an excerpt from what they post: You are an atheist, you have changed religions or ...

Oneness Pentecostals believe that baptism is absolutely essential to salvation. An All Saints Baptism
2007-11-06 23:19:00
We are told that, in baptism, we "take off our sinful selves" and we are then "clothed in Christ Jesus." As a symbol of this new beginning, candidates for baptism in the early church took off all of their clothes, were baptized nude, and then were reclothed in white robes which indicated their new purity in Christ. This white baptismal robe is the origin of the Alb worn by many clergy during worship services. The idea of being "clothed in Christ" is also preserved in the practice of baptismal gowns - white gowns for children who are being baptizedLayla's baptismal gown served as a connection with the generations that came before. It was made by Layla's Great-Great Grandmother, Serena Hansen. It was worn by her Great-Grandpa Hansen and his three siblings, by her Grandpa Hansen and his sister, and of course by her Dad and his brothers. On the day of Layla's death and re-birth, only a few members of her family were able to be there -- those who are still living and were able to make...

Paris Hilton's Baptism By David Letterman Is Wake-Up Call
2007-10-06 18:28:00
I kind of avoided this issue but after reading all of the blogs about it, I couldn't help it. As you know if you follow celebrities, Paris Hilton was on David Letterman last week, Wednesday and was given the royal post-jail baptism by David himself. If you've not seen the YouTube video of the event, it's here: Now David was totally hard on her, and reportedly she's not going to appear on David Letterman again. Indeed, the Internet headlines don't look good: "Paris Humiliated", "David Letterman Mocks", "David Letterman Grills" , and so on. What I'd like to learn is how Dave came to decide he was going to treat her that way. I'd like to be in the production meeting when that went down. Well, what he did falls in line with my YouTube video when she got out of jail: Paris did handle the Letterman episode well, and now -- and on the same day that she was on Letterman -- annouced she was going to travel to Rwanda , saying There's so much need in that area, and I feel li...

Mass Baptism
2007-09-24 08:50:00
Last Saturday, I witnessed the mass baptism of more than a hundred kids. The 9-month-old daughter of my wife's cousin happens to be one of them and I was asked to be one of her godparents for which I obliged. The church was packed with people and the kids, 76 of them and the first of two batches, have to endure the weltering ceremony. Outside the church, 98 more kids were waiting for their turn. The special occassion, I've learned is held every year coinciding with the barangay fiesta. Parents take this opportunity to spare themselves of expensive preparations for the baptismal celebration including the minimal fee often charged by the church. The only presiding priest attending the ceremony referred to all the kids in general, all the parents and godparents. Then he has to go to every baby for the actual baptismal rites. It was quite an experience however I just felt no solemnity at all. In most part, the priest was barely audible such that most of us couldn't respond well during th...
Infant Baptism or Dedication? Many Parents Struggle With This Issue In Tod
2007-09-19 05:07:00
To bless or baptize the baby: By THEA RUTHERFORD, Guardian National Correspondent - Nassau, Bahamas: At eight months old her baby has not yet been christened, an unusual departure from the traditional six-week mark that she is used to. The new mom and her husband, who is not of the Christian faith, have struggled with the issue. "We talked about it for months," says (the mother who prefers to remain anonymous). Both parents agree that they want their baby to have a Christian background. They want him to experience Sunday School and they want him to know the Bible. They don't want him to be ostracized by others as someone who has not been christened. But they are torn. And they are not alone. Many parents put off either baptizing or dedicating their infants because they have trouble deciding which path to follow. Parents may be from different faith traditions as well as from different religions. Others may no longer see the significance of baby baptism or dedication. But ...

Justin Taylor named this whole debate. It is officially the “baptizoblogodebate”-;. It is a new era for Christian blogging, in my opinion. Is Membership in 1 Local Church Biblical?
2007-08-21 21:46:00
The baptism discussion is raising many questions. Sam Storms has entered the discussion and emphasized how the very nature of the Lord’s Supper would lead one to include all believers not engaged in gross unrepentant sin in the celebration of the Supper. I ask how is celebration of the Supper different from membership in the ...
Agreement on Baptism

I was blessed to baptize my son, Connor, at camp on Friday. Lea and I have been talking to Connor for some time now about becoming a Christian. Connor decided it was time. Later that afternoon I asked him if he'd like to watch the video we shot of his baptism. He said, "Sure dad, and can you put it on your blog?"I'm honored to put it on my blog, Connor. Your mom and I are very proud of you and we love you very much.PS - The crazy guy you see briefly in the video is Nate, our fantastic (yet goof-ball) youth minister. He was shooting the video for us.
