2009-07-25 22:36:00 Remarks of President Barack Obama Weekly Address Saturday, July 24, 2009 Washington, DC PODCAST OF THIS ARTICLE Download MP3 5 mbI recently heard from a small business owner from New Jersey who wrote that he employs eight people and provides health insurance for all of them. But his policy goes up at least 20 percent each year, and today, it costs almost $1,400 per family per month ? his highest business expense besides his employees? salaries. He?s already had to let two of them go, and he may be forced to eliminate health insurance altogether. He wrote, simply: "I am not looking for free health care, I would just like to get my premiums reduced enough to be able to afford it."Day after day, I hear from people just like him. Workers worried they may lose their coverage if they become too sick, or lose their job, or change jobs. Families who fear they may not be able to get insurance, or change insurance, if someone in their family has a pre-existing condition. And small busin...

Today, I want to speak with you about the stakes of this debate, for our people and for the future of our nation. This is an issue that affects the health and financial well-being of every single American and the stability of our entire economy. It?s about every family unable to keep up with soaring out of pocket costs and premiums rising three times faster than wages. Every worker afraid of losing health insurance if they lose their job, or change jobs. Everyone who?s worried that they may not be able to get insurance or change insurance if someone in their family has a pre-existing condition. It?s about a woman in Colorado who told us that when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, her insurance company ? the one she?d paid over $70...

During my visit to Russia, we began the process of resetting relations so that we can address key national priorities like the threat of nuclear weapons and extremism. At the G8 summit, leaders from nearly thirty nations met to discuss how we will collectively confront the urgent challenges of our time, from managing the global recession to fighting global warming to addressing global hunger and poverty. And in Ghana, I laid out my agenda for supporting democracy and development in Africa and around the world. But even as we make progress on these challenges abroad, my thoughts are on the state of our economy at home. And that?s what I want to talk to you about today. We came into office facing the most severe economic downturn since the Great...

This weekend is a time to get together with family and friends, kick back, and enjoy a little time off. And I hope that?s exactly what all of you do. But I also want to take a moment today to reflect on what I believe is the meaning of this distinctly American holiday.Today, we are called to remember not only the day our country was born ? we are also called to remember the indomitable spirit of the first American citizens who made that day possible. We are called to remember how unlikely it was that our American experiment would succeed at all; that a small band of patriots would declare independence from a powerful empire; and that they would form, in the new world, what the old world had never known ? a government of, by, and for the people. That unyielding spirit is what defines us as Americans. It is what ...

And for more than three decades, we have seen that dependence grow. We have seen our reliance on fossil fuels jeopardize our national security. We have seen it pollute the air we breathe and endanger our planet. And most of all, we have seen other countries realize a critical truth: the nation that leads in the creation of a clean energy economy will be the nation that leads the 21st century global economy. Now is the time for the United States of America to realize this too. Now is the time for us to lead. The energy bill that passed the House will finally create a set of incentives that will spark a clean ...

An epidemic of irresponsibility took hold from Wall Street to Washington to Main Street. And the consequences have been disastrous. Millions of Americans have seen their life savings erode; families have been devastated by job losses; businesses large and small have closed their doors. In response, this week, my administration proposed a set of major reforms to the rules that govern our financial system; to attack the causes of this crisis and to prevent future crises from taking place; to ensure that our markets can work fairly and freely for businesses and consumers alike. We are going to promote markets that work for those who play by the rules. 2009-06-14 20:18:00 Remarks of President Barack Obama Weekly Address Saturday, June 12, 2009 Washington, DC.Last week, I spoke to you about my commitment to work with Congress to pass health care reform this year. Today, I?d like to speak about how that effort is essential to restoring fiscal responsibility. When it comes to the cost of health care, this much is clear: the status quo is unsustainable for families, businesses, and government. America spends nearly 50 percent more per person on health care than any other country. Health care premiums have doubled over the last decade, deductibles and out-of-pocket costs have skyrocketed, and many with preexisting conditions are denied coverage. More and more, Americans are being priced out of the care they need. These costs are also hurting business, as some big businesses are at a competitive disadvantage with their foreign counterparts, and some small businesses are forced to cut benefits, drop coverage, or even lay off workers. Meanwhile, Medicare and M...

Even as we speak, Congress is preparing to introduce and debate health reform legislation that is the product of many months of effort and deliberation. After leaving the DA?s office, she became a litigator, representing clients in complex international legal disputes. But this is not only a time for celebration, it is also a time to reflect on what this holiday is all about; to pay tribute to our fallen heroes; and to remember the servicemen and women who cannot be with us this year because they are standing post far from home ? in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world. On Friday, I traveled to Annapolis, where I spoke at the Commencement of the United States Naval Academy. It was an honor to address some of America?s newest sailors and Marines as their Commander-in-Chief. Looking out at all of those young men and women, I was reminded of the extraordinary service that they are rendering to our country. And I was reminded, too, of all of the sacrifices that their parents...

And while there remains a great deal of difficult work ahead, I am heartened by what we have seen these past few days: a willingness of those with different points of view and disparate interests to come together around common goals ? to embrace a shared sense of responsibility and make historic progress.Chairman Henry W...

I want to briefly share some news about our economy, and talk about the work that we?re doing both to protect American consumers, and to put our economy back on a path to growth and prosperity. This week, we saw some signs that the gears of America?s economic engine are slowly beginning to turn. Consumer spending and home sales are stabilizing. Unemployment claims are dropping and job losses are beginning to slow. But these trends are far from satisfactory. The unemployment rate is at its highest point in twenty-five years. We are still in the midst of a deep recession that was years in the making, and it will take time to fully turn this economy around. We cannot rest until our work is done. Today, I?d like to take a few minutes to explain why. This is a new strain of the flu virus, and because we haven?t developed an immunity to it, it has more potential to cause us harm. Unlike the various strains of animal flu that have emerged in the past, it?s a flu that is spreading from human to human. This creates the potential for a pandemic, which is why we are acting quickly and aggressively. This H1N1 flu has had its biggest impact in Mexico, where it has claimed a number of lives and infected hundreds more. Thus far, the strain in this country that has infected people in at least nineteen states has not been as potent or as deadly. Over the last three months, my Administration has taken aggressive action to confront an historic economic crisis. As we do everything that we can to create jobs and get our economy moving, we?re also building a new foundation for lasting prosperity ? a foundation that invests in quality education, lowers health care costs, and develops new sources of energy powered by new jobs and industries. One of the pillars of that foundation must be fiscal discipline. We came into office facing a budget deficit of $1.3 trillion for this year alone, and the cost of confronting our economic crisis is high. But we cannot settle for a future of rising deficits and debts that our children cannot pay.All across America, families are tightening their belts and making hard choices. Now, Washington must show that same sense of responsibility. That is why we ...
Barak Obama And Krispy Kreme Want To Get Into China's Business. But W
2008-11-01 17:39:00 Two things the United States should not be exporting to China right now are our economic mess and our fat-laden diet. Yet, Barack Obama and Krispy Kreme are planning/seeking to do exactly that. In a Wall Street Journal story, entitled, "China-Trade Issue Thrust Into Races as Vote Nears," (h/t to China Journal) Obama makes clear that he believes the United States should be dictating to China what China should be doing with its own economy: In a letter released Wednesday by the National Council on Textile Organizations, a trade group, the Illinois senator vowed to address industry complaints that China is manipulating its currency to gain a competitive advantage in the global marketplace. Sen. Obama said China's massive trade surplus with the U.S. is a direct result of "manipulation of its currency's value," and stressed "China must change its policies, including its foreign-exchange policies." Sen. Obama said China's economy must rely less on exports and more on domestic dem...

Has Barak Obama United the GOP?
2008-06-08 04:54:00 ONE BRIEF SHINING MOMENT?A Republican friend emailed a link to this today. She’s concerned attacks like this are going to hurt John McCain this fall. The author or the piece in question, John Dendahl was the NMGOP’s impotent 2006 nominee to run against Bill Richardson. He has a half-way decent resume, but there were questions about how he arrived at his nomination, but that’s a different story. “…Without meaning to impugn your spectacularly apparent patriotism, I hope to find you more resolute as to what it means to be an American vis-à -vis our policies on whom to admit, ...

I'm Just Bitter...Hanging on to My Guns and God
2008-04-17 13:00:00 By Nathan McIntyreI believe in the Bible. I believe that it is the inspired word of God. Perhaps my definition of inspired will differ from yours, nevertheless, it's a good read.Somewhere in between the desert themed Vacation Bible School and five loaves on a flannel graph there is a fabulous passage noting "that from the wellsprings of the heart, the mouth speaks." Basically, it says to keep talking. We'll figure you out eventually.Wholly true for Barack Obama.Speaking to a closed fundraiser in San Francisco, California, last week, Obama said decades of lost jobs and unfulfilled promises from Washington have left some Pennsylvanians "bitter" and clinging "to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."Apparently Sen. Obama has never read any Dale Carnegie, because good Mr. Carnegie took issue with Obama from the get-go.The question was asked why so many in the "heartland"...
So Is THIS Socialism?
2008-04-11 22:59:00 by Nathan McIntyreFor those of you thinking I've been a little paranoid lately over a President Obama, check out this little snip from Mark Rose (courtesy of TennesseeFree.com). Enjoy, er, shudder."Barack Obama has written in his autobiography that he organized his life around the ideals imparted by his Kenyan father, Barak H. Obama, a Harvard-trained economist. So what were those ideals?PrestoPundit has found a 1965 paper written by Obama's father, in which he advocates:- 100% taxation- communal farms / the elimination of private farming- the nationalization of businesses owned by "Europeans" and "Asians".- "active" measures to bring about a classless society Yikes! This is right out of Marxism/Leninism. It's not watered-down socialism. It IS socialism -- in its purest form."So is Obama a socialist?
My Own Personal Struggle With Barack Obama
2008-04-03 13:00:00 --Nathan McIntyreIt's a cool April afternoon as I sit here writing to you on my own porch. You'll likely read this Thursday morning, so it's not exactly "coming at ya live." Programming admissions aside, I'll preface all I'm now about to say with a few more insights. As I write I feel incredibly conflicted. Each one of us carries within us a heart, and mind, and the two of mine are at war. Pardon me if this piece feels like a running mental dialogue. It's what I'm in the mood for, and it is my lil nook o'the web after all.It seems like the Front Porch lately has been more like Barack Obama's back patio, with much being written about the Illisnois senator's candidacy for the White House. Indeed, he is a enigmatic character; one which sets my passion and intellect at conflict with one another. As many of you know, I supported Ron Paul's libertarian candidacy for the past year, and improbable as it was I believed in him. Many of you did too, and with the same fervor at which ...

Graham, midday talk show host at WVOL-1470AM, a Nashville radio station with a primarily black audience, had as a guest Rev. James David Manning, the pastor of Harlem's Atlah Worldwide Church. In the article, Rev. Graham described Rev. Manning as 'controversial'... ?This man has been trashing Barack Obama in a fashion that makes what the Rev. Jeremiah Wright said sound mild,? Graham said of Manning. ?He?s called Obama?s mother trash, and is on the record as saying any black man who hasn?t been in jail can?t be trusted. He?s downing him in very specific and vicious language.? So, being charitable and cautious, I searched the web for information on Rev. Dr...

How Barack Obama is Lining Up for a November Loss
2008-03-24 17:27:00 By Cameron ClarkAlthough it seems Illinois Senator Barack Obama is headed for the Democratic Presidential nomination this summer, the latest and greatest detritus being spewed from the pulpit at the Trinity United Church of Christ will, in all likelihood, cost Obama the Presidency. How might that happen? The "Independents" so coveted by both major parties this fall are made up of the nation's most ignored political faction, the angry white man. These voters are enraged and alienated every time CNN runs a headline on Obama's church affiliation and their comparisons to the United States government as the Klu Klux Klan or Al-Qaeda. Whenever that happens, a couple thousand independents roll their eyes and commit their time, money, and vote to beating an Obama candidacy. The TUCC is fond of recording and selling their sermons on DVD, and I would imagine a copy of every sermon available for purchase has been bought and sent to Arlington, Virginia (Home of the Republican National Headqua...

The Unquestionable Barak Obama
2008-02-28 14:53:00 --Nathan McIntyreAbout an hour from my hometown of Florence, Alabama is the city of Cullman. Cullman is a typical sleepy deep South town, with barber shops, diners, and old men on Court House steps. As I've traveled the world a little bit, I have often been informed of the shame that I should carry about on my shoulders because I hail from the heart of Dixie. Apparently we all still hate black people, and just about any other non-white face. News to me.It's news to Cullman as well. The city, which is 96% white, just elected their first black mayor. Interestingly enough, it didn't take an awareness campaign or a march. People simply listened to the issues and voted."Really, I never realized he's black," said a woman in a restaurant, smiling."He's black?" asked Lou Bradford, a Cullman police officer, jokingly. It didn't make national headlines, but this moment of enlightenment came to the world not through legistlation, or agitation, but simply through good people paying attentio...

Politics and Mood Swings
2008-02-14 16:00:00 by Nathan McIntyreLast week here in middle Tennessee many of you saw that we had quite a party. Storms ravaged much of the state, and while we were waiting on the storms to pass I had a thought."This is a lot like working at church."It is true that in a former life I was a minister, and having since repented of my religiosity I look back on those days and can only learn from them. Hey, they didn't kill me. Almost, but not so much. That being said, teenagers are a lot like tornados. You know they're coming and get that clammy feeling. Then they randomly blow in, loudly for just a few moments, leaving a path of destruction immediately followed by blue skies above. Nice. They are struggling to gain their identities, so it's all about them. And while it remains a normal phase of life, that fact makes them no easier to live with. Whatever you want to call it, it’s as close to a national primary as we’ve ever had in this country, and there’s a decent chance that today will determine the Republican presidential candidate. The Democratic candidate may be determined also, although that’s significantly less likely - the two top candidates earn delegates according to the proportion of the vote they received. Regardless, however, with such a high percentage of states and delegates up for grabs today, the results matter a great deal. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to caucus here in Colorado today, but given that I still haven’t settled on whether I prefer Sen. Clinton or Sen. Obama, that’s not necessarily a problem. I spent some time yesterday on both websites and each of the Democratic candidates is wrong about enough things that I don’t like either of them much. Too many...
Barak Obama Gets Kind Words From The Pope
2008-02-02 06:36:00 "I loved him in "fresh prince of bel air," Said the Pope in an interview with Playboy magazine. "Hillary Clinton reminds me of Carlton, totally lame!" said the amused Pontiff. The Pope went on to talk about many issues but had very kind words for Obama. "I see Hillary as a more of Carlton type, not cool like Barak." Said the Pope. The Pope also has sent Barak an autographed photo of himself in his youthful days. "I used to be pretty excited about politics when I was a youth, I even was part of a very special club, but I had to quit when sadly when our leader committed suicide. It was a very hard time in my life."

Gore to Endorse Barak Obama
2008-02-01 01:36:00 Rumors have been circulating, that Al Gore will formally endorse Barak Obama before Super Tuesday.Could we see a possible Obama Gore ticket? Could the inventor of the internet and global warming be the next super Democrat to endorse Barak Obama? Sources close to the former Vice President, say that Gore may support Obama before Super Tuesday. For the Clintons this would be another devastating blow, hopefully the one to knock them out of the race.

Barak Obama and the Camelot Myth
2008-01-31 15:10:00 by Nathan McIntyreMuch has been to do about the nothing this week that was Ted Kennedy endorsing Barack Obama for the White House. Neely Tucker of the Washington Post penned this recent piece absolutely soaked in leftist dreamer drivel, in which he anointed Obama as "Camelot's new knight." After I finished dry heaving from the drama laced in every word, I decided to take a little time and ponder all the hullabaloo."Over the years, I've been deeply moved by the people who've told me they wish they could feel inspired and hopeful about America the way people did when my father was president," Caroline Kennedy told a cheering throng of students at American University. "This longing is even more profound today. Fortunately, there is one candidate who offers that same sense of hope and inspiration, and I am proud to endorse Senator Barack Obama for president." This was nearly note perfect. Inspiration and hope and longing, the touchstones of the American Dream. And what, you're going...
