Frank Shamrock vs. Phil Baroni Strikeforce + Full Analysis
2008-05-01 09:21:00
One of my favorite fights from last year, Frank Shamrock vs. Phil "The New York Badass" Baroni (video)http://www.youtube.com/v-/e4QekTB6DCo&fmt=18Somethin-g I don't do very often for fight videos here on the blog- a round by round analysis of the fight:Round 1Baroni tried to end it quick, but Shamrock played it smart and avoided getting clipped hard, even showing a little flair with his head movement. Shamrock even nearly ended the fight there in the first with a punch that took Baroni's knees out from under him. Unfortunately for Shamrock, he decides to punch Baroni in the head, which get him stood up, with a point deducted.Baroni keeps at it, and takes Frank down, but takes some damage on the way. I have to say that sadly enough for Baroni, Shamrock actually out punched him from closed guard, which i find just hilarious. After getting the fight back on the feet, Baroni tries to single leg Shamrock, which just ends with Shamrock nearly taking the back and getting some good grou...

He did it again! Bill Baroni did it again, and no one should be surprised any longer that he can not be counted on when the choice is between voting the right way or voting with the Democrats. Baroni, as he did last time around, cast the ONLY Republican vote in favor of the Paid Family Leave ...

State Senator “Union” Bill Baroni has endorsed Andy Unanue for US Senate. Phil Baroni not fighting in Sengoku??
2008-02-10 08:07:00
Five Ounce of Pain reports today that Phil Baroni has signed with EliteXC. His first fight for EliteXC is confirmed and will be agianst Kala Kolohe Hose on March 15. There is no doubt that this would conflict with a fight in Sengoku against Sanae Kikuta. The problems with having 2 management teams were mentioned on FightOpinion soon after the fight was announced. As you remember there was some controversy around the announcement of Baroni for Sengoku. There is more likely more controversy to come...It would not be good for Sengoku to lose a fight like that just a month away from their first event. The card as it looks now:Sanae Kikuta 26-6-3 vs. 10-8-0 Phil Baroni (?)Makoto Takimoto 4-3-0 vs. 15-10-0 Evangelista "Cyborg" SantosKazuo Misaki 18-8-2 (1NC) vs. 13-1-1 Siyar BahadurzadaHidehiko Yoshida 7-5-1 vs. 20-5-0 Josh BarnettAlso participating:-Ryo Kawamura 7-1-2-Takanori Gomi 27-3-0-Fabricio Monteiro (?) 16-6-0

2008-01-13 10:31:00
It was reported yesterday by MMAWeekly that Ken Pavia, Baroni’s manager, has said that the fight between Baroni and Kikuta, which was announced by WVR for their first ever event, has not been signed yet. In another article at Sherdog it is said that Brazilian Fabricio Monteiro has signed a four-fight contract with WVR. Sengoku I Date: March ...
Sengoku signs another figher - Baroni in doubt
2008-01-12 12:51:00
Accourding to Sherdog Phil Baroni has not yet signed the Sengoku and is considering his options. I think Sengoku has given him a good offer, and Japan would be an attractive option for him. I really hope to see him back here.In the same article, Sherdog is saying that they have confirmation that Fabricio Monteiro has signed will Sengoku and will appear on the March 5 card. Monterio is on a 2 match losing streak, but I would still say a very good addition to this card that is shaping up to be something special.Current card:Sanae Kikuta 26-6-3 vs. 10-8-0 Phil BaroniParticipating: -Fabricio Monteiro 16-6-0-Kazuo Misaki 19-8-2-Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos 15-10-0-Siyar Bahadurazada 13-1-1-Hidehiko Yoshida 7-5-1-Ryo Kawamura 7-1-2-Makoto Takimoto 3-3-0

Baroni case highlights CSAC flaws - 06 Nov 2007 12:13:51pm
2007-11-06 13:13:00
By Dave Meltzer Phil Baroni says he spent $20,000 to clear his name, lost sponsors, and believed he comes out of his steroid suspension with a damaged reputation. The MMA fighter had has year-long sentence reduced to six months at the Oct. 31 meeting of the California State Athletic Commision in Los Angeles. Baroni also believes lost one six-figure payday for not being able to fight on the Nov. 16 Strikeforce event. Baroni noted the case of boxer James Toney, who presented no evidence in his August defense other than saying he didn't take the steroids for which he tested positive. Toney got the same suspension reduction Baroni did. And unlike Baroni, who had never tested positive previously, it was Toney's second violation. While originally reported as Nov. 13, Baroni?s appeal date is in question because they have to find a date where all key parties are available. Hearings for UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk, Kazuhiro Nakamura (who tested positive for marijuana on ...
Baroni Not Happy With Reduced Sentence - 02 Nov 2007 12:05:08pm
2007-11-02 13:05:00
By Tom Hamlin LOS ANGELES ? Phil Baroni looked morose as he exited his hearing with the California State Athletic Commission on Wednesday. His suspension of one year had been reduced to six months, but his name was not cleared. ?It feels like a loss to me,? Baroni told reporters. ?I?m convicted of using steroids. I didn?t use steroids. I thought I took enough tests to prove I didn?t. I wanted more than anything to prove I didn?t do it. To be cleared of it. And I?m not. I?m labeled guilty. ?I?ll be able to fight soon, but I still didn?t get what I wanted.? Baroni testified in front of the CSAC board for nearly a half-hour, flatly denying any steroid use and speaking at length about his career and training methods. The centerpiece of his defense was four separate steroid tests he took around the time of his fight. The first was taken at the behest of manager Ken Pavia, who claimed he ordered it prior to the fight after discovering one of the 67 supplements Baroni was taking ca...
Phil Baroni Back In December! - 01 Nov 2007 11:13:38am
2007-11-01 12:13:00
By Brian Knapp & Loretta Hunt The California State Athletic Commission voted 3-2 at a hearing today in Los Angeles to reduce middleweight brawler Phil Baroni?s suspension for suspected steroid use from one year to six months. Baroni, who was also fined $2,500 by the commission, will remain suspended through Saturday, Dec. 22. One board member abstained from voting. The commission struck down two previous motions, one to uphold the original one-year suspension and another for dismissal. The 31-year-old tested positive for two anabolic agents ? Boldenone Metabolite and Stanozolol Metabolite ? after his submission loss to Frank Shamrock in a Strikeforce middleweight championship bout June 22 in San Jose, Calif. Once considered one of the bright young stars at 185 pounds, Baroni (10-8) has lost seven of his past 12 fights. Known for his brash pre-fight antics, he holds first-round stoppage victories over Amar Suloev, Ryo Chonan, ex-King of Pancrase Yuki Kondo and former UFC ...
CSAC Verdicts: Sherk Postponed, Baroni Reduced, and Nakamura Extended
2007-11-01 04:29:00
The California State Athletic Commission has postponed its decision to appeal UFC Lightweight champ, Sean Sherk?s one year suspension and fine. The CSAC?s ruling has been extended because Sherk?s attorney, Howard Jacobs recently submitted new evidence, which has not been reviewed by all the commission members. Sherk is presently serving a one year ...

Former UFC contender, Phil “the New York Bad Ass” Baroni will seek to clear his name in front of the California State Athletic Commission today. Hearing date set for Sherk, Baroni, Nakamura and Smith - 19 Oct 2007 07:49:
2007-10-19 21:49:00
Sean Shark, Phil Baroni, Kazuhiro Nakamura and Adam Smith are scheduled to appear in front of the California State Athletic Commission in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 31 to appeal their suspensions. The most important one is Sherk's hearing, as the result of Sherk's appeal will determine whether or not the UFC will strip Sherk of his lightweight title. After successfully defending his title against Hermes Franca on July 7 at UFC 73, Sherk tested positive for Nandrolone and was subsequently suspended one year and fined $2,500. Middleweight Phil Baroni was also suspended one year and fined $2,500 for testing positive for Boldenone and Stanozolol after his loss to Frank Shamrock on July 22. Light heavyweight Kazuhiro Nakamura received a $500 fine and a 3-month suspension for a positive marijuana test following his UFC debut on September 22. Light heavyweight Adam Smith became the first mixed martial artist in the state of California to test positive for anabolic agent...

MMA News Updates: Baroni, Jackson-Henderson
2007-07-04 07:21:00
Two pretty interesting developments hit the MMA scene today. Phil Baroni tests positive for steroids (gasp!) and it's now said that the fight between Quinton Jackson and Dan Henderson WILL in fact be for the UFC light heavyweight belt, despite yesterday's allegations mentioned by the OCregister. Here are brief descriptions of the news updates and my two cents:1. Baroni testing positive for steroidsPhil "The NY Bad Ass" Baroni most recently lost by submission at the hands of MMA legend Frank Shamrock at Strikeforce/EliteXC's "Shamrock vs. Baroni" event held on June 22. It has now been reported by the California State Athletic Commission(CSAC) that Baroni tested positive for Boldenone Metabolite and Stanozolol Metabolite, two common anabolic steroids. And because of this, Baroni has been fined $2,500 and suspended 365 days, quite the crap storm for Baroni. What is with fighters and steroids? I mean, they always end up getting caught, punished and on top of all this, they usually don...

BARONI VS. SHAMROCK CARD COMING TOGETHER
2007-04-04 16:39:00
Although the event is a little over two months away, the California-based Strikeforce promotion is set to hold its biggest event in its young history on June 22nd. After months of talk and bad blood, Phil Baroni will finally meet Frank Shamrock in the cage in one of the most anticipated fights of the year. The two were first set to meet on December 8th at Strikeforce: Triple Threat, but contractual issues prevented the fight from happening. The fight was then scheduled to take place on the next Strikeforce in April, but Frank Shamrock signed on to fight Renzo Gracie instead at Elite XC: Destiny. This created a legal firestorm that eventually forged a partnership between Strikeforce and Elite XC, which resulted in a fighter exchange and Strikeforce’s June 22nd pay-per-view debut being distributed by Showtime PPV and co-promoted by Elite XC.Murilo “Ninja” Rua will make his U.S. debut as he takes on fellow Pride veteran Joey Villasenor for the Elite XC Middleweight Championship.
