Bartolo Colon Resembles Past Cy Young Form
2008-05-27 08:09:00 It is rare for a former Cy Young Award winner to sneak under the radar, but Bartolo Colon certainly has. Every team had its chance to pick this guy up as a free agent, but the defending champion Boston Red Sox are the team that was able to take advantage. Colon has won both of his starts this season, while allowing just 3 earned runs and 3 walks. While injuries have hampered him the past two seasons,...

Bartolo Colon Proves He Can Help Boston Be "Great In 2008"...Red Sox 6 Kans
2008-05-22 11:38:00 The Boston Red Sox got JUST what they needed Wednesday night at Fenway Park as newly acquired veteran Bartolo Colon, three years removed from winning the AL Cy Young Award, pitched five solid innings in a game which the Red Sox won easily by a score of 6-3. It was their sixth win in a row and improved their MLB best record to 30-19. Colon will be our fifth starter for the rest of the year, and, barring injuries, should be able to win 12 plus games. How was he last night? He gave up six hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out two in a nifty first outing. Here's what his catcher, Jason Varitek, had to say...?He?s going to help us,? catcher Jason Varitek said. ?He threw some good strikes, he elevated the ball sometimes, he did good. I saw some 94 MPH's up there. You?ve got to remember it?s still his first outing. It was a good starting point for building his strength.?Peter here, and if he progresses with each and every start the way I think he will, Boston got away with a s...
Bartolo Colon ALMOST Ready For Call-Up
2008-05-16 11:36:00 Good Friday morning, a morning I don't have to write about a Boston Red Sox loss. And there's GOOD news to boot! Bartolo Colon, our soon-to-be fifth starter, pitched for Pawtucket yesterday and went six great innings, allowing only one hit and hitting 96 MPH on the gun. The only problem was that he only needed 64 pitches (45 of 'em strikes) to go those six innings, so the Sox will probably want him to go one more time Tuesday before joining the big club. If that's the case, we'll see him on or about Sunday, and boy, do we need him. If he could become a dependable starter, and there's nothing to make me think otherwise, Boston will be a much better club, injuries notwithstanding. And right now he's feeling great. If he doesn't go on Tuesday, the start will probably be awarded to Justin Masterson, who had his worst outing yesterday pitching for Double A Portland, giving up seven earned runs and nine hits in six innings. Come to think of it, I wouldn't be at all surprised to s...
Bartolo Colon placed on disabled list with side strain
2008-04-08 02:07:00 Bartolo Colon had a setback in his attempt to return to the big leagues with the Boston Red Sox. The 2005 Cy Young Award winner, who is pitching for Triple-A Pawtucket, strained his right side. He was placed on the seven-day disabled list Monday and will miss at least one start. Colon will be re-examined Tuesday in ...

Large & In Charge - Bartolo Colon Sharp In Pawtucket
2008-04-05 00:00:00 If Bartolo Colon keeps pitching like he did last night for the PawSox we may have more then just a number five pitcher on or hands. Granted this was against triple A opponents, but his stat line was still very...

Bartolo Colon Razor Sharp
2008-04-04 14:38:00 What the Boston Red Sox need more than anything is good starting pitching, and yesterday in Pawtucket, newly aquired Bartolo Colon gave the team a huge shot in the arm. With Clay Buchholz looking like he's not quite "ready for prime time," the fifth spot in the rotation is wide open. Yesterday Colon pitched five scoreless innings while facing only one batter over the minimum. He allowed a lone hit and one walk and struck out five. Of his 74 pitches, 45 were strikes. He had this to say after his stunning performance..."I felt very good," Colon said through interpreter Cookie Rojas, Pawtucket's general sales manager. "I felt like I had control of the ball. I pitched very well today. All I know is that I'll be pitching again in five days."Peter here, and yes you did, and yes you will, Bartolo. We are going to need you. BIGTIME. Clay's future is in front of him. The team needs a solid fifth starter to be able to compete in the American League. NOW. Let's hope Colon comes through. W...

Emotional day at Dodgertown; Bartolo Colon, Carlos Silva rocked (AP)
2008-03-18 03:23:00 Tommy Lasorda said goodbye to Dodgertown in style, walking out of Holman Stadium under an archway of bats. Bartolo Colon and Carlos Silva also had a difficult day, but for a much different reason. His eyes red, his steps slow, Lasorda waved to the fans for the final time at Dodgertown. Down in the ...

Bartolo Colon excels in debut for Red Sox; Carlos Beltran struggles in cent
2008-03-14 03:33:00 For Bartolo Colon, it was almost as if he’d been pitching all spring. Carlos Beltran, however, felt as if he hadn’t played center field before. And Ichiro Suzuki wasn’t sure he’d ever get another hit. Colon pitched two solid innings Thursday in his first time on the mound for the Boston Red Sox, a ...

Red Sox newcomer Bartolo Colon preparing for first outing
2008-02-27 23:34:00 Bartolo Colon wants to prove there’s plenty left in his once-dependable right arm. After two days of playing catch with his new pitching coach, the 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner has impressed Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona. “Very pleased,” Francona said Wednesday. “Probably a little bit ahead of where we expect him to be.” Those throwing ...

Red Sox sign Bartolo Colon
2008-02-26 12:49:00 The Boston Red Sox are taking a "no-risk, high-reward" shot on Bartolo Colon. The Red Sox came to terms Monday on a minor league contract with the 2005 Cy Young Award winner. The 34-year-old righty, who last pitched on Feb. 6 in the Caribbean World Series, is expected to arrive in camp Tuesday. The team's medical staff will evaluate the two-time All-Star, who has gone 7-13 with a 5.72 ERA while slowed by shoulder and elbow injuries the past two seasons. He went 6-8 with a 6.34 ERA in the final year of a four-year, $51 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels last season. If he is added to the Red Sox 40-man roster, he would get a $1.2 million, one-year contract and have the chance to earn performance and roster bonuses.

Red Sox Sign Bartolo Colon To A Minor League Deal
2008-02-25 01:05:00 According to Jerry Crasnick at ESPN.com, the Red Sox and Bartolo Colon have a preliminary agreement on a minor league deal. Colon spent most of 2007 with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim injured and didn’t exactly have his typical numbers. He was 6-8 with 6.43 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 19 games. If Colon can stay ...

Bartolo Colon Signs With Red Sox
2008-02-24 23:39:00 According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the Red Sox have signed starter Bartolo Colon to a minor league deal. The deal has no guaranteed money. That's a far cry from the guaranteed two-year big league deal Colon wanted at the beginning of the offseason. Colon will add depth to Boston's rotation, and you certainly have to like the move for the Red Sox. Maybe Colon was motivated by a chance to win or a good medical staff, because Boston seems a poor place to find innings if he's mediocre or worse.

Astros Interested In Bartolo Colon
2008-02-03 12:01:00 According to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes, the Astros will have two scouts watching Bartolo Colon pitch Wednesday in the Dominican Republic. Astros GM Ed Wade said he's not at the point of talking contract yet, which makes sense. A factor determining Wade's budget will be the arbitration hearings of Mark Loretta and Jose Valverde. Colon indicated a preference to pitch in the National League, and expects to sign next week.

White Sox Eyeing Bartolo Colon
2008-01-11 14:55:00 WHBF-TV, a CBS affiliate for the Quad Cities, reports that Ozzie Guillen was present in the Dominican Republic yesterday to watch Bartolo Colon pitch. Guillen was sent to gauge Colon's health. Health is the reason the Mets reportedly backed off on Colon. The big righty pitched for the White Sox in 2003, racking up 242 innings with a 3.87 ERA. Chicago's rotation could use a little depth, in Ken Rosenthal's opinion.

Mets Pitching Plans
2007-12-31 18:43:00 Many readers have written me asking what the Mets are going to do to upgrade their starting rotation. Matthew Cerrone as a man in the know, and he's written a summary over at MetsBlog. Cerrone senses nothing much cooking on the Johan Santana front, yet the Mets remain "oddly confident." Cerrone believes the Mets will probably sign one rehabber - Freddy Garcia or Bartolo Colon. He says reviews on Colon in the Dominican Winter League have been positive. Omar Minaya knows Colon well, having traded the farm for him as GM of the Expos. Garcia may be ready to pitch around June. Coming off a frayed rotator cuff and labrum he may not contribute much in 2008. Bullpen wise, Cerrone says Octavio Dotel is on the radar, especially if Aaron Heilman is traded. There's a lack of buzz with the Mets for Kyle Lohse, Livan Hernandez, and Joe Blanton currently. showad();

Would Texas take a chance on Bartolo Colon?
2007-12-28 20:46:00 Now that the Texas Rangers have traded away Edinson Volquez, thought to be a viable option as the fifth starter, Texas may be more inclined to get an experienced arm to bring in for spring training. One possibility is right-hander Bartolo Colon. He's 38 years old, pitched in just 99 1/3 innings last year. Colon won the Cy Young in 2005, going 21-8 with 3.48 ERA in 222 2/3 innings. But a partially torn rotator cuff after that season has left him struggling to regain his form. His 2007 numbers: 6-8, 6.34 ERA in 99 1/3 innings. He allowed 15 homers, 29 walks and struck out 76. Opponents batted .320 against him and the numbers were about even against righties or lefties. Batters jumped on the first pitch they saw from Colon in 2007, hitting eight homers on first pitches and sporting a .423 batting average (30-for-71), including 20 RBIs.

Rangers Rumors: Guardado, Cameron, Hamilton
2007-12-21 22:16:00 MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has all the latest hot stove buzz around the Rangers. The Rangers are nearing a deal with Eddie Guardado. Everyday Eddie might be a dark horse to close, if he can flash his late season form again. The Reds decided in October that he was not worth $3.5MM, and declined his option. Guardado is 37. The Rangers hope to add some kind of veteran starter. Bartolo Colon and Jason Jennings are still options, but Mark Prior and Freddy Garcia pretty much are not. Sullivan names Mike Maroth, Mark Hendrickson, and Josh Towers as pitchers of interest. Mike Cameron could be an option for center field if he'll take a one-year deal. A multiyear demand would also take the Rangers out of the running for Corey Patterson. Sullivan notes that the Reds want Edinson Volzquez for Josh Hamilton, a possibility he first mentioned three weeks ago. Jamey Newberg doesn't think Volquez would cut it. Other trade options could include Andre Et...

Odds and Ends: Colon, Clark, Gagne
2007-12-02 16:44:00 Random rumors, let's round 'em up. How about Bartolo Colon to the Mets? David Lennon notes that Omar Minaya sold the farm to acquire him in 2002 as the Expos' GM. Scott Lauber says Aaron Rowand is insisting on a five-year deal. He adds that the Phils have interest in Geoff Jenkins but he might be too expensive. Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller are considered untouchable, so don't look for the Tigers to make any big trades. Patrick Saunders runs down some free agents the Rockies may consider for the back end of their rotation: Tony Armas, Matt Clement, Steve Trachsel, Josh Fogg, Jason Jennings, Jon Lieber, Mark Redman, Brett Tomko, and Kip Wells. The Rays may go after Tony Clark, in large part because they're seeking leadership. Marc Topkin agrees, and also rattles off Geoff Jenkins, Brad Wilkerson, Cliff Floyd, Mike Lamb, Mark Sweeney, Corey Koskie, and Greg Nortion as other possibilities. It's expected that Eric Gagne will not accept Boston's offer o...

Today's Arbitration Decisions
2007-12-01 19:18:00 The decision whether to offer your own free agent arbitration can affect your team in two ways: you may end up retaining a player you didn't want, or you may score a draft pick or two as compensation. With that in mind let's run down the rumors regarding some Type A and B free agents. The Red Sox plan on offering arbitration to Type B Eric Gagne. Worst case scenario, they hang onto him for one more year. Best case, they get a sandwich pick. The Astros have to decide on Trever Miller and Mark Loretta. Both are Type Bs, but the Astros might not want them back. Richard Justice notes that the old Astro regime made a mistake not offering arbitration to Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte. The Angels decided not to offer arby to Bartolo Colon, because the most they could give him would be a 20% pay cut. So best case scenario they could get him for one year, $11.2MM. Colon is not a Type A or B, so there's no compensation regardless. The Phils will ...

Nats Like Andruw, Livan, Jennings, Colon, Glavine
2007-11-07 03:24:00 UPDATE, EVENING OF 11-6-07: MLB.com's Bill Ladson has some more good Nationals information. His source says that both Livan Hernandez and Tom Glavine are interested in the club, but they only have the budget for one of them. Glavine makes more sense. Ladson also mentions that Bowden has his eye on Rocco Baldelli, and idea I like. I can't really think of a great match for a trade though. FROM MORNING OF 11-6-07: According to the Washington Post, Nationals president Stan Kasten recently met with Andruw Jones at the center fielder's home in Atlanta. Kasten, of course, was formerly president of the Braves. Kasten's contact with Jones is described as "extremely preliminary." That makes sense, since technically the two parties are not allowed to talk dollars and cents. But come on - it's not like Andruw's house is bugged by MLB. The Nationals' open-minded pledge has already led them to contact Torii Hunte...
