2008-02-24 14:44:00
Baseball Prospectus | Articles | Every Given Sunday: A New Angel in the Outfield: "The Nationals are considering keeping left-hander Ross Detwiler, their first-round draft pick last year, on the major league roster as a reliever to start the season."I've got a $1 or $2 set aside for him if true.
Baseball Prospectus 2008 Shipping News
2008-02-22 05:32:00
Due to some scattered shipping dates quoted by various on-line book retailers, we?ve received many inquiries from readers as to just when they can expect to receive their copies of Baseball Prospectus 2008. Sadly, we?re not told much more about this than anyone else; when you publish a book, it?s a bit like sending your ...

Phils Get Hosed by Baseball Prospectus, Arlen Specter Fights Back
2008-02-18 18:36:00
I broke my coffee mug this morning. Not just any mug, but my favorite. The handle had a significant chip in it and was clearly ready to fall, but I didn?t look at the signs. All of it was in front of my eyes and I just ignored it. And then it broke. Of course, I?m lying to you, I actually
Baseball Prospectus 2008 is Almost Here!
2008-02-16 20:15:00
The thirteenth time?s the charm. It?s mid-February, and as has been the case every year since we began back in 1996, it?s time for the Baseball Prospectus annual to arrive. The official publication date of Baseball Prospectus 2008 is February 25, but certain retailers, including Barnes and Noble.com and corporeal, brick and mortar stores, ...
Baseball Prospectus Projects The Standings
2008-02-16 11:08:00
Always interesting when Baseball Prospectus uses their PECOTA system to project the standings.  Click here to take a look, and consider subscribing if you haven't. PECOTA sees the Yankees winning the AL East and the Angels taking the AL West.  They have the Indians and Tigers playing a tiebreaker for the AL Central and the Red Sox as the league's wild card entry. As for the NL, the Mets take the East.  The Cubs win the Central, while the D'Backs and Dodgers tie for the West.  The wild card would be the Brewers.
Fake Teams On Baseball Prospectus Radio
2008-02-14 18:22:00
Last week, I had the privilege of talking with Will Caroll from Baseball Prospectus about the upcoming fantasy baseball season in BP's Fantasy February series for Baseball Prospectus Radio (BPR).  The interview is up. Go over to listen. It is not behind the subscriber wall. There are also many other more accomplished fantasy experts to listen to. Fake Teams on BPR
Baseball Prospectus' Top 11 Los Angeles Dodgers Prospects
2008-02-01 19:09:00
Baseball Prospectus has posted its Top 11 Los Angeles Dodgers Prospects.  I'm sure raygu has seen them as he specifically asked about them in BP's chat yesterday, but, in case he did, I'll post them. I am surprised about a couple players.  Chin-Lung Hu as a five-star prospect and Scott Elbert as a four-star one.  Neither player is getting much hype this off-season - Elbert because he had shoulder surgery (understandable) and Hu for some reason I cannot figure. As a fantasy player, Elbert means very little, but Hu is ready to step-in at SS once the season ends and is a good sleeper in the event Furcal is injured this season. Five-Star Prospects Clayton Kershaw, LHP Andy LaRoche, 3B Chin-Lung Hu, SS Four-Star Prospects 4. Scott Elbert, LHP Three-Star Prospects James McDonald, RHP Josh Bell, 3B Chris Withrow, RHP Jonathan Meloan, RHP Ivan DeJesus, SS Blake Dewitt, 3B James Adkins, RHP
Baseball Prospectus' Top 11 Minnesota Twins Prospects - Eduardo Morlan
2007-11-29 13:55:00
With all the attention being paid to the Twins efforts at replenishing their system via a Johan Santana trade, Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus has released his Top 11 Minnesota Twins Prospects.   Mr. Goldstein slots an organizations prospects into one of five star categories.  The fact the Twins have no five-star prospects speaks to the systems lack of depth.  Without a hitting prospect who finished higher than Low A explains why the team is focused on adding hitting. Behind the subscriber wall, Mr. Goldstein also provides a Top 10 players under 25 which includes major league players.  There were just three who are hitters - Revere, Joe Mauer and Alexi Casilla.  For a small-budget team, that isn't a good signal.  While Santana should add three players under 25, the team will still need to deal some of their well-regarded pitching to add hitting.  The trade of Matt Garza for Delmon Young accomplishes that. The bigger concern is the Twins sub...
Baseball Prospectus' Top 11 Anaheim Angels Prospects
2007-11-20 19:39:00
With all the talk about the Angels giving-up the cream of their prospect crop, Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus has released his Top 11 Angels Prospects. There is little surprise at thet top with the much-talked-about Nick Adenhart and Brandon Wood leading the way. The remaining eight are not household names for anyone except the most hard-core prospects mavens. RKPLAYERPOS 1 Nick Adenhart RHP 2 Brandon Wood 3B/SS 3 Jordan Walden RHP 4 Hank Conger C 5 Sean O'Sullivan RHP 6 Sean Rodriguez SS 7 Peter Bourjos OF 8 Rich Thompson RHP 9 Matt Sweeney 3B 10 Jon Bachanov RHP 11 Mason Tobin RHP While Jordan Walden, Hank Conger and Peter Bourjos are at least two years away from the majors (and that assume huge breakouts in 2009!), any of them would provide good fallback options if the Angels refuse to part with any one or two of their major league/AAA counterparts in any negotiations with the Marlins about Miguel Cabrera. Baseball Prospectus' Top 11 Chicago White Sox Prospects
2007-11-13 19:55:00
Kevin Golstein of Baseball Prospectus posted his Top 11 Chicago White Sox Prospects a few days ago, and it is full of players that most fantasy owners have never heard of. The #1 prospect, Fautino de los Santos, may be the least known of all the 30 top prospects. Given he struck out 153 in 122.1 innings, that will likely change by next March. Whether de los Santos would be ranked that highly if the White Sox had a better minor league system is up for debate. What isn't is Mr. Goldstein's assessment that system is weak. The mere presence of AAA CF Ryan Sweeney is proof enough. He has failed to develop the power his 6'4 frame envisons, but he is just 23 and could surprise. I'm just not counting on it, and neither is White Sox GM kenny Williams if the Torri Hunter rumors are to be believed. RKPLAYERPOS 1 Fautino de los Santos RHP 2 Gio Gonzalez LHP 3 Aaron Poreda RHP 4 Chris Carter 1B 5 John Shelby CF 6 Jose Martinez OF 7 Jack Egbert RHP 8 Ryan Sweeney OF 9 Lance Broadway RHP 10 Br...
Baseball Prospectus' Top 11 Boston Red Sox Prospects
2007-11-06 19:20:00
Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein has his Top 11 Boston Red Sox Prospects up. There is no surprise with the top two players, but sinkerballer Justin Materson at #3 may be more eyebrow raising. He struck out 115 in 153.2 innings of work between AA and AAA. That is not the ratio I normally associate with major league success However, I suspect the high-profile success of the Yankees' Chien-Ming Wang and the Indians Fausto Carmona has made the groundball-inducing pitching prospect a more attractive option for long-term success. I do wonder if this is the discovery of a new market inefficiency or a mistake of using the success of a non-representative sample to make an incorrect valuation. RKPLAYERPOS 1 Clay Buchholz RHP 2 Jacoby Ellsbury CF 3 Justin Masterson RHP 4 Jed Lowrie SS 5 Ryan Kalish OF 6 Michael Bowden RHP 7 Lars Anderson 1B 8 Nick Hagadone RHP 9 Oscar Tejeda SS 10 Josh Reddick OF 11 Che-Husan Lin OF
Baseball Prospectus' Top 11 Baltimore Orioles Prospects
2007-10-31 23:14:00
Maybe Halloween is too early, but there isn't anything occurring in minor league baseball that would so dramatically change the performances of this past season's minor leaguers. Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus has the first of sixty top prospects lists (30 by BP and another 30 by Baseball America)that will be published through the middle of February which culminating with a Top 100 list from both publications. The kick-off for the organizational reports begins with the Baltimore Orioles. Topping the list is the team's 2007 1st round pick, catcher Matt Wieters. While four other teams passed on him, he could very well be the next Joe Mauer. This would be an explanation for a player with just 68 Hawaii Winter League ABs worth of experience under his professional belt topping an organization's prospect list. However, I don't believe it. (ed. Hey smarty pants! What about Joba Chamberlain's HWL efforts last year?) Here is the list of Kevin Goldstein's Top 11 Baltimore Oriol...
Chances of Making the Postseason from Baseball Prospectus
2007-09-24 14:42:00
Some interesting notes from the Baseball Prospectus Postseason Odds Report. With one week to go in the baseball season there isn't much left to do for the fantasy owner other than to sit back and let the chips fall where they may. I will be posting on some post-mortems for my teams and thinking about next year in the offseason. But for now there isn't much to do. So, I was looking at a very
Latest From Baseball Prospectus: Jacque, Snell
2007-07-23 18:17:00
Will Carroll and John Perrotto have teamed up at BP to join the rumor mill, and yesterday's post is free to nonsubscribers.  Some highlights: Carroll reports that the Cubs could swap Jacque Jones and a prospect for Jeff Conine.  Perhaps such a move would be in tandem with Adam Dunn leaving Cincinnati.  The Cubs might want to hold on to Jones though; he's playing well lately. Carroll heard a far out Alex Rodriguez to the Dodgers rumor, but doesn't buy it.  Neither do I - the Yankees don't seem to be selling.  Carroll says Brian Cashman and Co. will wait until the last second to make a buyer/seller decision.  There's a slight chance Jorge Posada becomes available if they choose the latter. Perrotto confirms a rumor that surfaced a week ago, that Ian Snell could be had for the right bat.  Perrotto would know, as he spent time as a Pirates' beat writer.  Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Matt Kemp are two possible targets for the Bucs. The Tigers may...
Free Baseball Prospectus
2007-07-10 17:46:00
Baseball Prospectus is making all of its content available to non-subscribers through the 15th.  This means Will Carroll's "Under The Knife" column is open for discussion as are Kevin Goldstein's minor league columns. Mr. Carroll provides an update on the Cardinals' Chris Carpenter who made a successful three-inning start on Sunday.   [He is] pitching well in rehab, but he's not pitching much. His latest outing, again in Single-A, lasted only 39 pitches over three innings. To get back to the standard plan--something I'm not sure Carpenter is on--he'd have one more start and he'd need to throw around 75 pitches....but the progress he's made thus far has looked good. He's showing that everything is more or less in place, besides his stamina, to enable a jump right back into the top slot in the Cardinals rotation. On a regular schedule, Carpenter should be pitching on Friday, the 13th.  This would make the earliest possible return to the Cardinals rotation next ...

Breakdown: Baseball Prospectus NL East Catchup
2007-02-01 04:35:01
In case I didn’t mention before, Baseball Prospectus is one of my favorite baseball related websites. Baseball Prospectus brings the baseball fan in-depth columns, prospect interviews, transaction analysis, and player cards containing Baseball Prospectus’s Davenport Translations. This week BP focuses on the off season moves the Marlins made. Considering there was nothing ground breaking done in the offseason, Marlins fans probably didn’t miss much, but if you were too busy tanning at the beach this offseason, this is the article for you… Signed 3B-R Aaron Boone to a one-year contract. [12/29] Signed OF-R Chad Hermansen to a minor league contract with a spring training NRI. [1/5] Signed RHP Felix Rodriguez to a minor league contract with a spring training NRI. [1/12] Agreed to terms with LHP Dontrelle Willis on a one-year contract, avoiding arbitration. [1/15] Agreed to terms with C-R Miguel Olivo on a one-year contract, avoiding arbitration.
