Presto Pasta Night #69: Spaghetti with basil pesto and olives
2008-06-26 10:47:00 Hillary of Chew on That is co-hosts this week's Presto Pasta Nights, which started in March 2007 by Ruth of Once Upon a Feast. It was my son's turn to prepare lunch, he had a day off school. He made and rolled out the pasta (300 grams pasta flour, 3 eggs and 1/4 tsp. salt), used some basil pesto and added some leftover black olives. A classic recipe but always good! And it's nice to come home and get the lunch served. Technorati Tags: presto pasta night, homemade pasta

Presto Pasta Night #66: Homemade Ravioli with Basil Ricotta Filling
2008-06-08 00:00:00 I have to admit, I use this plastic containers for years, a shelf in the cellar is full of this stuff for freezing and refrigerating. The stuff is great, but I am afraid to buy more, because of my husband's behavior. T***ware and men don't agree. But I had to have the ravioli maker. As I promised, I didn't go to a party. I ordered it through my work-mate. I had some some pasta dough in the fridge from the lasagne. When I came home, I went straight into the kitchen, mixed together ricotta cheese parmesan cheese, egg yolks and basil pesto and rolled out the pasta. Than I followed the instructions for the T***-tool and served Homemade Ravioli with Basil Ricotta Filling My husband's comment: That was quick, you should do more ravioli. The first time he agreed with plastic from here. Recipe in German Technorati Tags: presto pasta night, pasta

Tofu & Basil Thai Soup
2008-05-19 15:20:00 If there's one thing I love about Thai food, it is the variety of flavor in their curries. A spoonful of red, green or yellow curry paste can add such a wonderful taste to an assortment of veggies! After mastering the recipe for Veg Tom Kha Soup, I decided to try a hand at this classic Thai Soup with Basil and Tofu. Its a very simple broth made of coconut milk and flavored with all the Thai herbs like lemongrass, galangal, kafir lime and ginger, coming together with the basil, tofu and peas to... Meet Basil Bunny
2008-05-16 06:55:00 Josh is setting up an aquarium, so we have been frequenting a salt water fish store that occasionally has bunnies. Last week, I just couldn't put this little guy down, so we took him home.Meet Basil Bunny. He is so sweet. He licks your hand for approval and bounces around the cage with our Guinea Pig, Bean. He shy, but playful. He fast as a whip, bucking around our living room like a bronco. Josh gets such a kick out of him.(Look closely for Basil Bunny's bucking antics.)The best part is that he's already litter trained. It was rather easy. We just put a litter box in his cage and voila!I was hoping for a little girl bunny, but it turns out that Basil has two little marbles near his tail. Now our home is 5 Boys/ Girls 1. That's okay with me.On a side note, please put Pikachu in your thoughts. He has a severe seizure in the middle of the night. (We thought he was choking, and he even lost bowel control.) The vet hopes that this was an isolated instance, but we are being very pre...

WHB #131: Basil Rhubarb Compote
2008-05-04 00:00:00 The 131st edition of Weekend Herb Blogging is hosted by Anh of Food Lover's Journey. The German cook Ralf Zacherl introduced a basil flavoured rhubarb compote in a TV Cooking Show. The TV show appears very late on Friday night, so I have to admit I missed the end and the point of putting in the basil. The recipe said, that you should flavour the compote with basil after cooking. I didn't like the idea of green spots in my compote, so I watched the archived show some days later. The end of the show, when Ralf Zacherl wanted to serve the dessert, was a bit frantic. I couldn't see how he used the basil, but I heard him say: "I forgot the basil". I was as wise as before. I decided to give the roughly chopped basil into a tea bag and cooked the compote as usual. After the compote has completely cooled, remove the bag and serve with ice cream! The basil goes well with the rhubarb, just delicious! Technorati Tags: weekend herb blogging at Food Lover's Journey, WHB, food and dr...

Basil-Sumac Scallops
2008-04-25 05:49:00 Another easy breezy way to prepare seafood, this time I picked scallops. Scallops need very little fuss, they have a high sugar content and work very well when seared with light favors. Here is what a did with them, resulting in a lovely sweet-tangy recipe. Basil-Sumac Scallops Serves 2 Ingredients 10 scallops1 tbsp grated jaggery1 tsp chilli powder1 tsp salt1 tsp grated ginger1 tsp sumac1 tbsp gheeA handful of fresh basil leaves Method of Preparation 1. Mix the scallops with the jaggery, chili powder, salt, ginger and sumac and let this sit for 15 minutes.2. In a heavy bottomed pan, heat the ghee and spread evenly across the pan.3. Place the scallops in a single layer on the pan and cook for about 5 minutes.4. Turn and cook for the same time on the other side. 5. The scallops should be lightly browned.6. Add the basil, serve with rice or salad. All right so this one goes out to WHB being hosted by Margot at Coffee and Vanilla.

Veal and Asparagus with Basil Mayo
2008-04-14 17:54:00 This meal is quick to make and very light and healthy, makes for a great summertime dinner that you can have on the table in 30 Min's, so a great after work recipe. I used veal scallops and did 4 per person, about 200g in weight for each person. I know this cut can be quite expensive so feel free to make this with veal cutlets of similar weight, taste just as good but kinder on the wallet. I used the scallops, as hubby had just come home from a business trip and wanted a light meal as he is never to hungry after a long flight, but I also wanted something a little more special hence the cut.If you have read the earlier post I wrote on the natural cutting boards I brought back from OZ you can find a description with a couple of photos under my natures cutting boards page. Baked Rigatoni Pasta with Homemade Garlic and Basil Marinara Sauce
2008-03-03 20:05:00 Pasta is such a staple dinner item in so many homes, it can get kind of challenging to make it interesting! :: Basil and Sweetcorn! A TASTE EXPERIENCE
2008-02-29 11:36:00 I picked this recipe up while staying with my lovely Auntie Annie during our recent trip to Florida, and it's a real discovery! The combination of Basil and sweetcorn works together to create a pretty a really interesting taste and a perfect side dish to grilled meat or chicken. The recipe itself is fairly straight forward but this one is definitely worth trying.Basil and SweetcornA Good Handful of Fresh Basil4 Corn on the Cob (Fresh if available)1 Tablespoon of ButterA Good sprinkle of Salt and PepperIn a large bowl, slice the the corn off the cob- if your using fresh, don't bother straining any of the excess juice that comes out, it all adds to the flavour. Chop the Basil roughly and put to the side. Place a sauce pan over a medium heat and add the butter until melted. Add the corn, toss, and then add the basil. Keep the mixture moving by stirring for about 3 Min's.Season with the Salt and Pepper and serve piping hot!Let me know what you think!

Homemade Basil Pesto
2008-02-02 01:43:00 Okay, now I have spent all day long on a field trip to an art museum with a bunch of 7 and 8 year olds. 10 hours???!!! Can you just imagine how I feel at this moment? Actually pretty good. A couple of glasses of wine later and some good food it all seems much better than it did!Yesterday afternoon was kind of cool though. I had gone to the organic Farmer's Market on Wednesday and had bought some organic basil and I sooo did not want it to go bad on me. Basil is pretty delicate. I decided that I would make some pesto from it to help extend it's life a little. I had a bunch of other pots in the fire during the day so I waited until after I had picked up the girls and instead of doing the regular homework we did some life lessons! I taught them how to make homemade pesto! The recipe was really easy using the food processor but they did get to get their hands into it by picking the basil. Enough about all that...here's the recipe.Basil Pesto2 cups fresh organic basil1/2 cu...

COLOURFUL FRUIT KABOBS...Cape gooseberry, Cheddar & Basil
2008-01-14 12:19:00 ?A fruit is a vegetable with looks and money. Plus, if you let fruit rot, it turns into wine, something Brussels sprouts never do.?P. J. O'Rourke CAPE GOOSEBERRY APPETIZERSIts winter here in North India & many seasonal fruits are making a welcome appearance. One of them is my favourite, the cape gooseberry, or the 'rusbhurrie' (meaning filled with juice). These little berries are sweet yet slightly tart, & are sold in bunches. In peak season, you will find cartloads of these lining the roads while driving...a sweet sight indeed. When we were kids, they would come each wrapped in its natural husky brown cover, which we would patiently peel & enjoy the fruit of our meagre labour. Times have changed....now they come in bunches (as pictured below), with their husks pulled back neatly & tied with strings to make life simpler. Somehow, for me, the charm was with the husk still on, because there was a certain joy in gently peeling the husk off! Thank heavens for small me...

Season to taste with pepper. Cook the fresh linguine (300 g flour and 3 eggs), drain, but save some cooking water. Mix with the pesto and add cooking water to the desired consistency. WHB # 103: Basil and Parsley on the windowsill
2007-10-07 00:00:00 The 103rd edition of Weekend Herb Blogging, is hosted by Haalo from Cook (almost) Anything At Least Once. Next week is the Doubly Delicious Two Year Anniversary of Weekend Herb Blogging: Food Bloggers should submit a recipe featuring least one vegetable and one herb. I think I have to pass this, because my kitchen looks a mess. The deadline for the kitchen renovation comes nearer. My husband installed new power outlets near the kitchen table and removed the doorframe. The children and I took off the base boards, doorsteps and the wallpapers. During the next week we empty the closets and try to store all, including the electrical equipment anywhere in the house. Only the basil and parsley stay on the windowsill. I hope I have a chance to participate WHB next week! Return to Haalo on Monday for the round-up. Technorati Tags: whb, weekend herb blogging at Cook (almost) Anything At Least Once

Zucchini Basil Muffins
2007-10-02 13:13:00 I think I can finally start posting the backlog of recipes that I tried out this summer. I finally got all the little bugs out of this new website, or so I hope. Anyway, this zucchini and basil muffin was a pleasant surprise, using two ingredients from our garden in a new way.
Meet Basil!
2007-09-27 12:13:00 As part of our series this week for National Dog Week and National Deaf Awareness Week - we would like you to meet Basil!10-month-old Basil is amazingly intelligent and eager to please. He has already learned some touch commands, and he picked them up in just a few minutes. He can sit, lie down and come when you stomp your foot on the floor. He walks perfectly on the leash. He's so smart, he could be on TV! Basil needs someone who has a lot of time to spend with him, maybe someone who works at home or a stay-at-home mom (or dad).Basil is currently being cared for by a foster family in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is listed through the Deaf Dog Education Action Fund who provides education and funding for the purpose of improving and/or saving the lives of deaf dogs. They are a non-profit organization founded to speak on behalf of and assist in the betterment of life for deaf dogs everywhere.
