Govt withdraws sop on basmati rice export to check inflation
2008-04-05 05:18:00
Taking yet another measure to check inflation through improving domestic supplies, the government on Friday stopped export incentives on basmati rice. “Export of basmati rice shall not be entitled for DEPB (Duty Entitlement Pass Book) benefits,” the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notice. The government has already banned export of non-basmati rice and revised ...

Hey Folks! I'm back after a short hiatus. February was supposed to be our home moving month, with the actual move planned for the end of the last week. However we had some rather unexpected warm and sunny weather on the weekend of 23-24 February. Given the 100 plus inches snow that we have plowed our way through since the start of this year, the ray of sunshine seemed promising, and indeed too good to pass up. At the very last minute we decided to take advantage of this good fortune that nature had sent us and move a week before planned. There was some unfinished maintenance at our new home, yet we decided to chance it :)Moving is tough work and while I am still unpacking the boxes (does that ever end??), I made sure the kitchen was set up and functioning on 'Day One'. Now where have I hear that phrase lately?? LoL, but seriously - I needed the inspiration and the creativity to survive the sheer tediousness of the move, the packing, and the unpacking. And what better way to unwin...

Comfort from the Cold: Spiced Brown Basmati Rice Pudding
2008-02-02 04:11:00
Somewhere around the first week of December (either that or the 3rd day there’s snow on the ground, whichever comes first), I decide I’ve had enough of winter.  Bah!  Who needs lawns covered in a glistening, pristine blanket of white?  Who needs billowy undulations of snow-covered hills along the roadside?  Who needs that dainty spray of unique, lacy flakes as they gently descend from the heavens?  Not I!    Despite all its awe-inspiring beauty, winter also brings with it a whole host of evils: treacherous patches of “black ice” concealed beneath a thin veneer of fresh white powder; knee-high snowdrifts that are agony to traverse in my ponderous, barely-warm-enough galoshes; wooly scarves pulled high over the nose (must protect my delicate proboscis from all that cold air whipping around, after all), causing impaired vision as my glasses fog up from the vapour of my heaving breath; and The Ordeal of the Walk, with its multiple layers of clothin...
Riso basmati con ceci speziati
2007-11-13 10:43:00
Da quando mia madre si è messa a conservare anche i legumi, in questa casa non si mangia altro. Me li ha messi tutti nei vasetti già cotti così all'occorrenza me li condisco come mi pare.

The decrepit design means that when one opens the plastic receptacle at the designated re-sealable mouth of the bag, rather than the gob simply opening to reveal the foodstuff within, the sheath inevitably tears its side and sends r...

Yellow Basmati Rice

This is a warm vegan rice salad and very tasty. The yellow is given by turmeric powder, the seitan and the green tofu make it really yummy! Who said that vegan dishes are tasteless?!?Ingredients:10 oz Basmati Rice1 carrot1 courgette10 oz seitan10 oz green tofu (with herbs)oreganorosemary1 clove of garlicturmeric powdersoy sauceolive oilsaltThe trick is to cook the ingredients one at a time in the same pan.> Begin by boiling the rice as usual with a pinch of salt.> Chop the courgette and slowly cook it in a pan with olive oil, salt and oregano, cover with a lid. When it is done set aside in a nice wide bowl where the rice will be served.> Chop the carrot and cook it slowly with half a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Be careful, turmeric is a very strong colour, it could stain your clothes forever!!!
